Foods to avoid during pregnancy
Seafood high in mercury:
- Swordfish
- Shark
- King mackerel
- Tilefish
- Limit to 8 -12 ounces of seafood a week:
- Shrimp
- Crab
- Canned light tuna (limit albacore tuna, chunk white tuna
- and tuna steak to no more than 6 ounces, or 170 grams, a week)
- Salmon
- Pollock
- Catfish
- Cod
- Tilapia
Raw, undercooked or contaminated seafood
Undercooked meat, poultry and eggs
Unpasteurized foods- milk, cheese
- Brie
- Feta
- Camembert
- Blue cheese

me either. White rice tastes so much better.
I’ve found that brown rice when soaked in a sauce is better.
You would not necessarily just have to eat brown, it could be implemented into your pasta for extra fiber and grain.
I love brown rice, really all rice and it’s cool to know it has a lot of fiber.

My family used to eat strictly white rice for a number of years, but then we slowly started incorporating brown rice into our diets, and now, the tables have turned because we only eat brown rice.
Wow. One of my favorite parts of eating a a Mexican restaurant is the queso. Since it’s unpasteurized a pregnant women should not eat it.
I agree as my wife ate all the health foods she could and now we have spoiled rotten kids who are very healthy. Now if I could just get them to eat healthy.

Good for her! I have no kids yet, but I sure will apply all the information provided in these videos. I know, it is really hard to make your kids eat in a healthy way while there is a lot of advertisements about fast food.
I grew up on a very poverty based diet and i’m now trying to get myself away from things that aren’t as healthy for me. I eventually want to be able to just want to get healthy food. and if my kids could grow up on a better diet than I could then that would be great
My wife and I have just recently been married in May so we are not trying for a child just yet. However, I will go on ahead and suggest the foods that are healthy and not healthy for her to eat when she is pregnant.
Whenever I decide to get married and have kids, I will be completely involved in the diet with my wife to help out as much as I can, this seems to be a tedious process.
It is a tedious process because it lasts not only for the during process but also after. It helps the woman and the child grow and prepare for the changes ahead.
I think that is a great idea. My husband went with me as much as possible to the store when I was pregnant.Even though the mother gains weight, the father will as well. Remember to get what is best for her and the baby, but get things that you need as well in your diet. I suggest if cookies are a good thing to have around for yourself, you hide it from your wife. My husband made the mistake of not hiding his, and he hardly had any of them once I hit my last 3 weeks of pregnancy. 😉 I know bad diet suggestions, but cravings happen, even to the men.
It’s pretty hard to keep up with a pregnant woman and her cravings. The only cravings I’ve really had was Captain Crunch cereal and cinnamon rolls. My husband had the most cravings of all. I think it’s called sympathy cravings. He always wanted weird things, which I was pretty jealous of.
For me as well. Healthy eating is a group effort.
I agree. A woman’s body is so sacred, taking care of the body all the time is so good for you but when you’re carrying another life you really have to make sure you’re doing good for two.

That sounds amazing. So many women now a days are single mothers or married mothers that are expected to know these things and be able to do them on their own. They definitely need assistance and support!

We’ve seen so many health tips, all of which seem to be included in this section. There is so much more of an incentive to eat well during this time of life.
I am not a big rice fan either. I prefer couscous or quinoa more than rice, plus those choices have more beneficial nutrients for both the mother and child. And yes, I agree to definitely eat more fruits and vegetables always!
I struggle to keep a balanced diet and if I was pregnant, I am not sure if I could comply to all of these suggestions.

Your right about getting between a pregnant woman and her cravings. I don’t have kids, but I have been around my sister when she was craving things. Her boyfriend told her to eat healthier and that didn’t go over so well for him.

I totally agree, I can’t physically have kids as I am a man but its definitely interesting to learn about what women go through when having a child and the proper nutrition steps they have to take.
I have no children either, but the video was really helpful. My oldest sister has gone through two pregnancies now and was struggling with choosing what to eat, or most foods she was eating made her sick. Hopefully, I can tell her or help her after learning about the foods pregnant women can eat.
I knew that when you are pregnant, you must avoid certain fish. I just didn’t really know what types of fish or what the reason was for avoiding them. I don’t like fish or any seafood, so when I was pregnant, I didn’t worry about what fish I needed to avoid. Because I always avoid fish all together.
I don’t like all fish but I do enjoy tuna and sushi. This was a bit upsetting for me when I found out that I have to limit fish intake due to the mercury content and that I have to avoid uncooked fish altogether. Good thing I don’t plan on getting pregnant anytime soon because I’m not ready to part with my love for eating these fish just yet 🙂

I’m not a fan of fish either but I’m also told that some fish is needed during pregnancy so I’m a little confused.
I do not like fish either. During my pregnancies I never ate fish. At that time i didn’t know it was a thing such as grapeseed oil. I found it very interesting to know that it was a danger to eat too much tuna, or certain types of cheeses were forbidden during pregnancy.
i was told to avoid fish when i was pregnant, i never payed much attention to the exact fish because i rarely ate fish in the first place. Learned some things from this video, definitely informative with great information for expecting mothers.

Same here. I had an idea of what foods to avoid so I just avoided a lot of different foods all together. No fish or processed meats and stiff like that.
I Knew that fish was something that you maybe had to avoid but I didn’t even think about the list of other things that you must avoid as well.
There were a few types of fish on the list that I did not know were bad during pregnancy.
I have also heard that you should stay away from fish, especially shellfish.
When you eat fish while pregnant can it call allergies down the road?
I am not a huge fan of fish. I have tried it but never liked it. I never had to really avoid fish due to not liking it so pregnancy and fish wasnt bad.
I thought that pregnant women should just stay away from ALL fish just to be sure, but I suppose that’s not the case.
My best friend just had a baby and she will be very interested when I go and share what i’ve learned from this video! She is usually a health “freak” though so I bet she followed what this video suggested exactly! But I did not know so I will be able to carry this information with me for when I get pregnant. It is obvious though that when someone is pregnant, they need to be very critical about what they intake into their body.

I agree! You hear many times you are eating for two but many women think Eat for 2 when it comes to amount. Wrong! Great Information!
This is true.. you don’t actually “eat for two”. Yes, you eat more food, but you aren’t supposed to add a crazy amount of extra food when pregnant like most people think. You don’t want to overeat. I remember asking my doctor about this when I found out I was pregnant last year.

I am very young and don’t have kids yet. But I know when the time is right I need to eat healthily and be aware of every food I eat. Because in pregnancy nutrition is more important than ever. You are not only eating for your health but your baby’s health as well.
That is the way I see it! Just like smoking and drinking or drugs while pregnant… It isn’t just your body you are effecting anymore. Have to do what is best for the baby at all times!
I agree, women should eat better when pregnant. I think many do not realize how important it is to eat healthy when pregnant. I never realized all of the foods that a women needs to eat and avoid during pregnancy.

I agree pregnant woman are selfish if they continue to smoke. When I was pregnant I would bite someone’s head off if they got to close with their cigs.
I completely agree. I can not stand when I see pregnant mothers smoking or even seeing people smoking around kids. I can not stand to be around people who smoke. When the people are smoking its like they do not care what they are doing to the baby inside them or the people around them.

yes, I wish that I had known all of this through my pregnancy’s. The accents were quite interesting to hear the whole video as well. She looked like she did not want to eat some of the stuff, I know it can be hard to eat that healthy!

This video was interesting! i have heard people say that when your pregnant you shouldn’t eat certain foods but never really knew there was so much!
I knew about just not eating tuna because of all of the mercury. But I ate normally with both of my pregnancies and my babies turned out just fine. I did not know about all of these foods they talked about on the video.
I know what you mean! It was nice to learn about what people actually mean when they say to stay away from certain foods. It was also really interesting to learn about folic acid.
One thing that a lot of pregnant women forget is that they are not just caring for their body; they have another person they are caring for and trying to get all the nutrients for them as well. I would hope that their best interest is trying to make sure their baby is in the best health possible. Some of them do try to get their baby the best care possible, of course, but it bugs me when I see a pregnant person smoking or drinking, or just, in general, being very unhealthy, because their bodies have grown to the point where it can handle it, but an infant has very low tolerances for anything unhealthy.
I totally agree with you!! In fact how is it not considered child abuse to smoke while pregnant…it is for drinking and in the state where I live smoking in the car with a child under 12 is illegal, so it definitely should be while pregnant! I have seen even the most normally selfish people choose to devote the time while pregnant to focus on great health choices for the good of their child…in my opinion it’s a part of that natural mothering ability and instinct that one should have! I have also seen the awful negative effects caused from smoking while pregnant and then who is left to deal with the aftermath… the poor babies that are effected and often times their health issues lead to long expensive hospital stays and medical bills that are very often picked up by the taxpayers! It’s just a bad situation all together and those poor babies shouldn’t have to suffer because of very poor decisions by people who shouldn’t even procreate, and I know that sounds harsh, but it is ridiculous in my opinion!

I never realized Tuna was a fish that that needed to be limited during pregnancy, because I definitely ate some tuna fish sandwiches a good handful of times.
My doctor said because it’s “raw” in a can, it isn’t good to eat when you’re pregnant, which was so hard for me. I love me some tuna fish!
I understand where people come from that you need to eat healthy for your baby and watch your diet as if you were not pregnant, but i cant help but wonder. Why not eat those lil things you werent able to eat while not pregnant. Your going to gain weight regardless so why not splurge a little.
I agree!!! You should reward yourself every now and then. It’s hard to be completely health conscious when eating for you and your unborn.
I can understand the want to splurge but I feel like when a women is pregnant that is when they should be the most conscious about what they consume. So many women over indulge and develop high blood pressure, diabetes, and it complicates their pregnancies, not all but some.
I completely agree!! I think it is okay to splurge just a bit but to be aware of how often you are splurging. Gestational diabetes will not only complicate your pregnancy but until about 10 weeks gestation, when the pancreas develops, the baby has no way to fight the excess sugar. Sugar goes across the placenta but insulin cannot, thus leaving the baby to their own defenses.
I do not have children but videos like this will be very helpful for when i do want to have children. Information like this will actually stick with me.

I never ate really anything harmful when I was pregnant with either child. But I can’t help but sometimes wonder if me not getting the proper nutrition when I was expecting my 2nd child caused some of his problems in development?
I found this video very I interesting. I am a single lady who is not pregnant and does not plan to be until I am married. But the advice was good and will be helpful in the future. Eating healthy while pregnant keeps the body healthy and it should decrease putting on more weight. So many women think that because they’re pregnant they need to eat way more and can eat anything they want. It is true that women need to eat a little more because they are eating for two, but they shouldn’t overdue it or eat unhealthy things. It’s good to keep a healthy diet while pregnant or not pregnant.
I have a twin sister so that is expecting so this video was very informative. She has been very curious if she is eating correctly throughout her pregnancy and her doc says she is but I guess her motherly instinct makes her question it! According to this video, she is eating everything 100% right! Her baby is just growing healthy and happy with all of it’s nutrients! She wondered about her tuna intake because of some sushi she likes, her doc informed her small portions were ok as mentioned in this video.
I remember my Anotomy and Physiology teacher telling us that being pregnant is a crucial state for the body. I have not had children but if I do I definitely will be eating all the healthy foods. I can not believe the number of women these days that don’t take care of their bodies when they are pregnant it is really sad because of the problems babies can develop because of their mother’s poor health.
I personally have not had children but i have been around many pregnant women and they always talk about how they get weird cravings and what all they eat. Not always being the healthiest things. It drives me crazy because you would think they would want to eat and be super healthy for their baby. But then again i have not experienced this.

I have never been pregnant, but I hope that when I am I will remember this video. This video had a lot of great information that would be helpful to any pregnant woman seeking advice. The “quality versus quantity” portion of the video was the part that really stuck out to me.
This video was very helpful for future use! I have never been pregnant, so it doesn’t do much now. When I do planning on having kids, I will know what to eat and what I should stay away from.
I was looking at the foods that you need to avoid and it said feta cheese. I was a little shocked and saddened. Cheese is my weakness.
“Quality over quantity…” very good advice not only for pregnant women but for anyone wanting to maintain a healthy balance with eating and weight. I knew the importance of whole wheat breads but I was happy to hear that white bread is ok from time to time. I usually get whole grain pastas and rice for extra fiber and I like the fact that she gave alternative foods for the high fiber group. Good video.
I agree. So many women over eat assuming its good for the baby, but it is unhealthy. Whole grains, fresh veggies, and protein is all you need! All in moderation!

Eating foods with a lot of folate in them help tremendously with the formation of the neural tube in an unborn baby. I took so much of it with my second child and she was born just fine, my oldest however was born with a defect in his spine, but this was also due to many health issues carried by me. When I was pregnant the first time, I craved potatoes ALL the time. It didn’t matter how they were cooked, baked, boiled, fried, even potato chips! The second time around, I craved cereal. It was basically all I would eat. Life was my favorite cereal, which isn’t too bad health-wise. Since I’m not a huge fan of steaks, I took Iron supplements during both pregnancies and it helped with my “low-energy” mood and lethargy. I had a very low appetite while pregnant, but I did take part in consuming sushi, but I limited this to a few times during the second pregnancy, the first I did not eat it at all. ( I love how the shopping cart is referred to as “the trolley”)

I pretty much was aware of all of this and followed it religiously when I was pregnant with my daughter. My doctor was always saying he wished all of his patients were as good as I was mainly because of my weight gain, but I wasn’t naive too the fact that the minute you have your child the weight just “poof” disappears. Believe me i have met many women that honestly believed that. But during pregnancy it is very important to maintain a good diet and low intensity exercise like walking is great for the mother and baby.
It is extremely important to limit everything in life, so the saying goes. All things in moderation. However when you’re talking about the health benefits of our children there isn’t anything we wouldn’t do to ensure their safety which is why its so important to be aware of the “rules” so to speak and have good pre-natal care during your pregnancy.
I’ve never been pregnant but this video was extremely helpful and one day I hope to revisit it.

You should use these tips for your future child! They are very helpful and to the point! which puts less stress on you during that time as well!
When I found out I was pregnant, my OBGYN gave me a list of foods to avoid and I was so surprised because I had never thought about that aspect of pregnancy. This is definitely a resource that should be used more frequently.
I found this video very informative and interesting. I love to eat almost all fresh water fish and seafood. I bet most expectant mothers do not know this information I know i did not. I know seafood was good for you but didn’t realize the list was that long
I agree! When my sister was pregnant she had no idea what was good for her and what she needed more of and what she needed to cut back on.
I wish I had knew more of this when I was pregnant, but my son is healthy so it’s ok. I looked up all the food I couldn’t have so I knew most of the foods on here. I only gained 25 pounds during my pregnancy, I ate healthier when I was pregnant than I do now.
I only gained 19 pounds and yes I had much healthier habits when i was pregnant than I do now.

I didn’t realize either that there were so many different foods that they have to avoid. It was interesting learning about what pregnant women should and shouldn’t eat.
This was very helpful advice. This is some advice that should be passed around, because many pregnant women either eat too much or too less. Mostly it is too much. They seem to do nothing but eat. Since they do eat a lot they should know which foods that they should actually be eating.
I agree about most pregnant women don’t meet their target intake of food or that they exceed it, and I think that is partly because most people aren’t aware of the proper foods to eat that ensure healthier lifestyles.
I think that this is true but I also believe that they take total advantage of that whole “eating for two” statement. Which has actually been proven to be false.
I ate almost anything when I was pregnant. I did take my supplements but I was younger. This is good to know for the future.

I completely understand, i had the same problem except I could not eat any meat the smell made me sick.
I was the exact same way. I just thought I was crazy because I had never heard of that before. I am so glad to know that someone else shared that problem.
I was the same way too! During my first pregnancy the smell of anything fried also made me so sick. It was terrible, but my second pregnancy, I did not experience that.
In my recent pregnancy I asked a lot of questions about food and I didn’t always get a straight answer. I wish I had seen this video at the time it would have explained a great deal. One thing that is very clear is the fact that a pregnant woman’s diet is not much different than a regular diet except for avoiding a few things or increasing the intake of other things.
my doctor is strict about my diet because I am hardly eating. Granted I do watch what I eat. But the pregnancy diet is just bascily what to avoid.
This video has a lot of good information. Wish I would have had it while I was pregnant. One of my first weird cravings was blue cheese. I did not know that it was not healthy during pregnancy. Also, the lady was saying that it was important to stay with the brown variety. When she picked up the bagels and potatoes I was shocked because I figure they had a lot of starch. I love bagel and potatoes so if I would have know they were okay to eat I would have loaded up!
As i see there are lots of things that expectant mothers should avoid in thier diets. Also that are many things they can eat and be healthy for the mom and the new baby.

When I was pregnant I was lucky that I couldn’t even be around any seafood before I would blow chunks…. I never had any problems with my pregnancy, but my doctor didn’t have to tell me that I wasn’t eating the proper nutrient for myself or my baby. I did take prenatal vitamins which was a huge help in my baby’s development. If I could do it all over again I would definetly eat healthier meals in better proportions.

My wife had little trouble adjusting with exception to the alcohol and caffeine limitations.
It seems that when you are pregnant you still follow the same guidelines for healthiness as if you aren’t pregnant but you do have to be more cautious about consuming foods that you do need! I did not know about the Folic Acid when you are pregnant. The seafood part sort of confused me only because under the video it showed foods to avoid. But if it is not undercooked then it is ok!
That was very interesting, although i am not pregnant now, I wish i would have known these things but its good my children are healthy, my youngest is allergic to a lot of things I didn’t eat. I wonder if this has anything to do with her allergies to certain things.

I have a friend who just learned that she is pregnant. She will be a teen parent, and I know she’s scared and doesn’t really know what to do and I’m someone around her age group that she can go to for advice. I look forward to sharing this information with her!

The avoidance of fish for pregnant women has been around for years due to the mercury content. This raises a question in my mind. I live on Lake Quachita or Ouachita, I eat fish a few times a week probably. It seems like almost every time I over due it a little I awake the next morning with a very metallic taste in my mouth and the slightest feeling that I can compare to a hangover. Can any one explain this? I am also curious about allergies. I have no known allergies and neither did my ex-wife. She was type one diabetic and would often use peanut butter to bring her sugar levels back up. My daughter is highly allergic to peanuts and no one in my family is. Doctors have expressed to me that childhood allergies are usually due to what the mother ingested during pregnancy. Is there a correlation between what my ex-wife ate and my daughters allergies?
That is a really good question! I’ve never thought about it in terms of allergies and what the mother ate during pregnancy, but my mom craved Mexican food while she was pregnant with me and I absolutely love Mexican food. Either there is a relationship or it’s a really big coincidence!
Same here, my son loves chocolate and thats what his mother ate all the time during her pregnancy with him.
Chocolate isn’t bad for as long as you eat it in moderation.
I don’t have any children but I have friends that do, and I have watched their pregnancies and noticed they had fish, and plenty of fast food which is not the best but does happen. I wish they would have watched this video, who would have thought you need to avoid soft cheeses. I wonder why some doctors say to avoid all fish. Its good to know that certain fish is safe to have when your pregnate.
I also craved Mexican food. I love it and could not eat it because of the white queso. I also worked at taco bell during my pregnancy so I ate a lot of that too. Not good.
I did not know that mercury played such a big part in pregnancy. Sounds like pregnant women should definitely stay away from fish and overloads of mercury.
