Healthy Shopping Tips

Choose cereal with 150 calories per servings and whole grains on the ingredients list. Add 1 cup of skim milk and 1 cup of fruit to your cereal for a healthy breakfast!

Look on the label to make sure your frozen meal has around 300 to 400 calories and 800 mg (or less) of sodium. Round out your meal with produce.

Here Dawn, myLifetime.com’s Nutritionist, recommends to always pick non- or low-fat milk and yogurt. When picking a cheese, make sure the saturated fat content is under 20%. As for eggs, use eggs and egg whites.

In this clip Dawn recommends sticking to 2 healthy snacks per day between meals. Each snack should have about 100 to 200 calories. Some good options are pistachios, low-fat yogurt, or a granola bar.

Loved these videos. Im a mother of 4 i work full time and i am in school so i am always looking for fast and easy . I was so glad to see that some of my favorite frozen foods and snacks are a good choice recommended by a dietician. I also learned that to look for so that i can have variety. Such a big fan of morning star and skinny cow products! My kids and i also love oatmeal and fruit and i was happy to learn that instant oatmeal is ok! I always worried that it wasn’t as healthy but its so easy for kids to prepare so we got it anyway.

I think its good to snack between meals because it allows you to not be so hungry the next time you eat. Plus it helps you from eating so much at the next meal time. The snacks should be healthy like some fruits or vegetables. I love bananas and carrots! They are my favorite to snack on!

snacking between meals is really good and can definately help curb your appetite at your next meal. The problem we have now is that people aren’t eating for hunger anymore. We start eating for hunger then finish the plate/dish because it tastes good. So now we’re snacking in between and still over eating. I can say, however, that i have seen/heard so much more about health and healthy eating these past couple of years so i do think we are now on an upward trend to help solve some of our issues.

I remember that I used to think snacking between meals was extremely taboo but now that I’m in school full time and have two jobs I have become to realize how beneficial snacking can be. Whenever I didn’t have snacks I noticed that I would end up overeating during meals to the point of discomfort just because I was so so hungry. Now that I eat healthy snacks in between I find myself eating good sized meals. I love morningstar especially being a vegetarian :)

Me too. I love a snack between meals because i stay hungry sad but true.

For yogurt don’t buy the americanized brands. They take something as fabulous as yogurt and add high fructose corn syrup and many other things with too many letters to put here to try to make them last longer while making them taste so good that you can’t help but buy their brands. Yes, they may taste like a million calories, but guess what? they are! Stick with the natural yogurts and do what she said. Add fresh fruit to it. Warning – less refined/americanized yogurts will be a tad tart especially when comparing one to the other. Personally, i like it, but i thought you’d want to know before you buy several. The best yogurts I’ve had were not in this country and had plain ingrediants that i could read and know what they were!

I loved these videos! I live on my own and I eat a lot of food that isn’t exactly great for me. The videos helped guide me to pick foods that are better. I eat a lot of frozen foods so that helped a bunch. I never knew that it was “ok” for me to actually eat them. I have to say that makes me feel a little better. The 150 calories of junk food kind of hurts my heart. Who can eat only two cookies? Not me!!

I usually just buy what looks good, but this has got me to thinking about whats in the package. I will now start reading the back of the box before I just buy something. I like to snack between meals, i eat about seven times a day at least. I eat a lot of fruit as a snack.

I love fruit. I eat it often as well. It tastes really good and is good for you at the same time.

Snacking between meals is a great idea. For instance, I only ate lunch and then dinner today, because my day was a bit crazy. By supper time I ate way more than I should of, and to top it off I did not eat untill 8:00 at night. If I would have chose a healthy snack before lunch, and inbetween lunch and dinner, I would not have ate so much at dinner time and I would have had more energy throughout the day.

I had no idea that oatmeal makes you full! I use to eat oatmeal all the time. Me and my mom usually do the 1 cup of cereal and 1 cup of skim milk, but I didn’t know that you should pick out a cereal that’s 150 calories. Me and my mom love the frozen meals, and the frozen steamed veggies.

The main thing is that you need to get regular oatmeal, not those sweetened with a lot of different things. It is best to spice up your oatmeal with fresh fruits or even nuts or honey. Another good thing when using honey is that if you eat honey from your local area, it can help with your allergies.

I often choose frozen foods as well as I prepare my meals and freeze them during the week. It allows us to eat foods with less preservatives in them as well. It is also great to better understand the interactions of oats and diary products. Dairy products are great and essential but they can become a hazard to our health if they are consumed with high fat contents.

I think it is a good thing to eat snacks that are good for you. On the diet I am on it says eat 6 times a day so you are suppose to snack. It helps me from eating so much at a meal and also keeps my energy up. I like eating snacks to keep me from getting hungry and then that keeps me from eating a lot at a meal then I do not use as many calories.

Ahuneycutt April 18, 2012 at 11:55 pm

I don’t usually pay attention to the fat content in foods. I need to pay more attention to that. I also liked the snacks she recommended. Pistachios, yogurt, and popcorn, are all things that I enjoy eating.

Im a big fan of the morning star products too! I also buy the frozen veggies as well. I think the 100 calorie snacks were a good invention as well for those who have a sweet tooth. My go to breakfast is either eggs and toast or cereal.

I liked these 4 videos. I do pretty good in the dairy department. Snacks could use some work. I have to admit I hate choosing cereal for my child. He wants nothing but sugar, & I want healthy. Next time I go I’m trying the 150 calorie per serving/ whole grain. Maybe, I can find something that makes both of us happy. I’m all for frozen foods. It’s quick, easy, and usually healthy!

Two things that I feel are most important are portion control. A lot of times it is how much we eat, not what we eat. Prepackaged food with single servings are a great way to do this. The problem with single serving is that many times it is more expensive than buying a huge box or bag at Sams.

Another important thing that was discussed was finding frozen foods that are healthy. Frozen vegetables are always a better choice than canned vegetables because the majority of time it is much lower in sodium.

I think the key to healthy eating is to keep a variety of good foods available. It is so expensive to do this now though. Perhaps try to grow some produce or search for quantity deals (like on strawberrys, etc.) where extras can be frozen.

This is great. I have been getting the frozen meals and then a pack of frozen veggies to cook with it. Great lunch for lots less than the cafeteria at work or going out. Looks like they seen to be somewhat healthy also. The snacking is where I need to watch myself and keep them under control. My problem is I do not have to be hungry to eat. I can eat just because I like something. Will power, Will power, Will power…

These videos really helped me with what I need to look for while grocery shopping! I have a hard time preparing meals for my family sometimes because my daughter is allergic to milk, eggs, and peanuts so I have to read all labels. These videos gave me some more good ideas on what to prepare without these ingredents in them.

The best tip in these videos is to control your portions. I dont follow the mainstream idea to eat low fat everything and I always eat the whole egg. I buy organic eggs from pastured chickens and consume a few per week. The same with milk, I buy a half gallon of organic whole milk. There is good information about eating whole foods at the Westin Price Foundation website.

Loved these videos! Very practical, because sometimes it can be hard to take what you learn in the textbooks and apply it in real life situations such as at the grocercy store. It was definitely helpful to have a dietician take healthy eating principles and apply them in making purchasing decisions.

My favorite was the three cup rule for breakfast. I dont do a lot of breakfast like I should so that would be easy for me. Portion control is a good idea for everyone to rememeber. I wish the food chains would leran this. I can never go anywhere to eat without the plate being so huge. I have learned to split with someone else but it stinks when your alone or with someone you feel awkward to share with. The snack idea where also good choices some of which I hadn’t thought about.

With those you really don’t have to worry so much about eating large portions because the portion sizes are just right!! I also love dairy products so it was nice to know the dos and donts.

I have always been a snacker, but I am bad about portion control. I have learned to buy somethings in individual packages and that seems to help. It does seem that more companies are making their products with portion control in mind. I recently found a variety pack of snackwell’s product that I love. Since I tend to overeat sweets, these have really helped me keep my “junk” food in check. I liked the suggestion about buying frozen veggies to always have them on hand if you don’t have any fresh. I have been buying packages of stir fry vegetables for several months and find myself eating a lot more now because there are several different kinds and I don’t get bored with the same flavors all the time.
