I didn’t know that vitamin A was needed for your skin, hair, nails, etc. He mentioned Accutane for the treatment of acne, I have been on that. I wish I would’ve known that vitamin A may have helped instead of being on that medication. However, I don’t eat many of the foods on the list for vitamin A.

I eat several things on the list but did not realize that they were high in vitamin A.

I didn’t know that vitamin A was needed for your skin, nails, and hair either. I have always had a problem with acne but I’ve never found anything that has helped, but it is interesting to know that the foods we eat can help with that.

I know I wish I had realize vitamin A could have helped skin that much my niece was on Accutane for years when she was young. To think if I had known I could have made her eat better and take a vitamin A supplement

All accutane is a high dose of vitamin A. and i agree is was very intresting to learn about.

I fall into the same boat, I never considered a vitamin A supplement, but now I might have to considering I don’t eat some of the listed items often.

I didn’t know about Accutane either. I wonder if this is the same drug that you have to have blood draws for because it is hard on the liver. Could Accutane be taken too much and cause toxicity in liver?

Alexis Smallwood October 6, 2015 at 11:54 pm

I had a family member that was on Accutane for months. I bet she wishes she would’ve known some food choices that would have helped her acne instead of staying on that medication!

Reply

KaycieBullion March 5, 2016 at 12:54 pm

Accutane is scary stuff! I used to work at a dermatology clinic. They make you sign a contract saying you won’t get pregnant and get monthly pregnancy and blood tests.

Vitamin A is an awesome vitamin and the first fat-soluble vitamin to be recognized! It is a very important vitamin for many reasons and plays a big role in a lot important functions in the body. My grandpa used to always take cod liver oil vitamins for the very reasons the guy talked about in the video. My grandpa swore by all vitamins and he lived to be old and relatively healthy most of his life. I definitely think vitamins are very important too, especially if you don’t get enough in your daily diet.

Vitamin A is a hidden gem. It has so many great things that seem to go unspoken sometimes. I would recommend it prior to starting Accutane – if it doesn’t seem to do the trick then you can always start it later.

I have taken Accutane twice and I am just fine. Yes, i have terrible scars on my back from the drug and intentions on my face, but when your skin is terrible, it’s worth it. I will probably take it for a third time because of how severe my acne is in coming back. The only place I could get vitamin A from is probably cantaloupe.

Reply

Stephanie Herndon February 27, 2014 at 1:19 pm

I have known people with severe acne and I was fortunate enough to not ever have that problem. My brother didn’t have severe but it was border line too severe and he always got so mad because I very rarely even got a pimple. Severe acne can also be embarrassing so I hope your acne doesn’t come back for you ever again.

I tried everything for acne and it wasn’t until my doctor gave me a vitamin A cream – (retinol A) that it went away– even a lot of the scaring went away after about a year of use. You might try that. You have to have a prescription for it though.

Vitamin A is good for blindness. Carrots are a good way to go because of the conversion to Beta carotene and I also give these to my dog who is a schnauzer. His vet suggested this because small breeds are typically prone to blindness. I also give him eggs from time to time due to the lutein in them.

Search for sweet potato and butternut squash soup. Avoid any recipes with cream. It should consist of sweet potato, carrot, butternut squash, garlic, onion, salt, and pepper. It tastes great, provides good vitamin A, is easy to make, and freezes well if you make it in large quantity. We also have started cubing carrots, sweet potato, and parsnip to roast as a side dish instead of white potatoes.

WOW! I thought Vitamin C was the main thing for immune and everything! Did not know this about Vitamin A. I will definitely eat these foods! The most interesting part of the video was about carrots not actually having Vitamin A but that its beta carotene is converted to Vitamin A!

It really is mind blowing at how little we know about our own bodies. I wish I knew everything there is to know about being healthy but I am still learning everyday.

I always heard of taking certain vitamins but never vitamin A, Its good to know that it helps with skin and hair as well as not many problems associated with taking the pill. Since I love to eat sweet Potatoes its good to know that I have received the vitamin without knowing.

Carrots and lettuce are the ones I use. I haven’t tried the others.

Sweet potatoes are awesome! I definitely get most of my vitamin A this way. My favorite way to eat them is to bake them until they shrivel up good. They need nothing whatsoever added to them when you eat them that way.

I like carrots raw or cooked. I like lettuce in salads. The other items are not on my to do list.

No matter what the health benefit is, I don’t think I’ll be adding liver to my menu…..yuck!!!

dbalding7689 February 4, 2014 at 5:30 pm

I’m not really a big fan of any of the main food sources of vitamin A; however, with all the benefits, I think I might have to deal with it and eat some carrots!

Yeah. She took it for really bad acne too. She has the laser stuff done, she tried everything and said that Accutane was the only thing that ever worked, but she said it made her hair really thin and eventually it started to fall out. I haven’t heard good things about the stuff.

I like to eat sweet potatoes because I know they have a lot of vitamin A in them and this helps your eyesight. Carrots do as well. I didn’t know that it helped with all of those other things though. Anything that helps with hair, skin, and nails I’m researching because I’d rather eat the natural stuff than take synthetic vitamins. And that Accutane stuff he was talking about, my friend took it for a while and she said it made her hair fall out. I don’t know if this is true or if she was just blowing smoke but I definitely do not want to put something like that on my face or in my body!

My cousin took Accutane when we were kids. It would make his face dry out so bad it was actually worse than the acne was. I remember it causing all inds of problems for him.

That sounds awful! Definitely not worth the trouble if it has such harsh side effects! I’d rather eat the Vitamin A in my foods!

fcarter-doreau June 17, 2014 at 7:28 pm

The Accutane medicine he was talking about is supposed to work wonders for people with severe acne, My husband took it or a similar form of it… he is from France so not sure of the actual name of the medicine he took as a teenager and said it worked great for his acne. However it is a very strong medicine and has some very serious side effects! The birth defects as a result of taking Accutane while pregnant are horrific and they often make patients get on birth control while taking it for this reason! Which would definitely make me apprehensive to take it or suggest it to anyone! I always wonder what a medicine that strong is doing to the body that you won’t know until years later. Call me a pessimist, but it can’t be good.

I think it is better to let food be your medicine than actual drugs.

Ashleigh Wiggins July 5, 2016 at 11:44 pm

Yikes! I think eating the food is better than a bald spot.

That’s terrible to hear she lost her hair. I am not a big eat in foods that have vitamin A. I would hate to begin to take it then bad things begin to happen to me.

I’ve also heard really awful things about that accutane can do. It’s so much better to just eat the vitamins naturally.
