All in all “we are what we eat”! Kind of scary when you think about it, bad I do not have a “green thumb”, it would be much cheaper to grow my own organic fruits and veggies rather than buy the expensive ones in the stores! It is much healthier 🙂

this is so true. growing your own does take a lot of work but would be much cheaper and way healthier.

I agree it is the best way to go but the reality is america is lazy!

lefj1979 April 6, 2016 at 7:39 pm

My grandmother had a garden when I was growing up and it was a lot of work to keep up and depending on the weather made it even harder.

kglasgow July 19, 2016 at 3:37 am

I agree. It is better in the long run.

jpatino July 26, 2016 at 3:55 pm

I agree, clean eating is best, but can be difficult.

bburks April 11, 2017 at 3:38 pm

I wish I lived somewhere were I could garden! I used to help my grandma with her garden and greenhouse, and that food was so fresh and yummy!

msorrell April 30, 2017 at 2:45 pm

Growing your own food usually tastes better too!

A.Wood July 13, 2017 at 1:28 pm

I agree but I never have the time to even start a garden let alone keep up with it.

Hailee Cooper November 8, 2017 at 4:51 pm

I always say I’m going to start growing my own veggies but Ive only got as far as growing herbs. It would be so much healthier and convenient

CHARPER3 November 8, 2017 at 5:49 pm

Hailee, at least you have a start. I just don’t have the time nor do I live in an ideal location for a garden. I do agree that it would be much more inexpensive.

Kaylee Gibson April 11, 2018 at 5:09 pm

Growing your own is hard. I’ve done it before with my family and when you already have a busy schedule already trying to get out there and get the garden watered is hard. My favorite thing about was how it brought the family together after a long day.

Kfalcone July 17, 2018 at 2:19 pm

This is so true! America is lazy and we are all on the go and so busy. I think if we had more time and it did not take such hard work, and depended so much on the environment, more people would grow there own food.

abane July 19, 2018 at 1:14 am

That is true. As a farmer I do put in a bit for seeds but when production hits you get more than what you paid for in both riches and in physical food storage for better and healthier options.

klane September 21, 2018 at 9:53 pm

Growing your own food is time consuming my grandma and dad do it though and i have to say their garden stuff taste better then store bought stuff.

TrinityT October 6, 2018 at 9:52 pm

When he started describing the “perfect” example of the type of food we need I knew that no one in today’s world ate like this. It is honestly a shame.

tsamuels November 7, 2018 at 3:20 am

fresh is best, just not the cheapest way to go.

RLD82 November 3, 2020 at 11:46 am

Not only is growing your own vegetables/fruits cheaper in the long run, it also provides you a sense of accomplishment. It is likely that you would be more apt to eat healthier options if you were the one putting in the labor/time to produce those options. I know that tomatoes that I have grown myself always taste much better than the ones you can buy in a grocery store.

panda August 30, 2022 at 10:25 am

i also agree, America is way to lazy. we are just flat out headed the wrong direction as far as health goes in this country. watccing these videos i keep seeing it over and over. i blame the government. There i said it

acrockett6564 September 25, 2022 at 3:34 pm

I do agree with the comment that America is lazy, I would count myself in on the quantity that do not take the healthy way.

CLovell April 8, 2015 at 4:58 pm

You do not have to worry about harmful sprays when you grow your own either

Reply

sboyett April 8, 2015 at 11:06 pm

I always wonder if the organic products in the store are really organic. I guess they have to be for them to advertise it that way. We by organic eggs and they are alot more expensive–almost double price. Going to the farmers market in the summer is a good way to get home grown fruits and vegetables.

ppumphrey December 2, 2015 at 2:44 pm

Growing your own fruits and veggies actually isnt hard!! I do not have a “green thumb” at all. I cant even keep fake plants alive, but we do well with our garden. and it is sooooo much cheaper!!

Chelsea Vogel Hunter February 7, 2016 at 6:34 am

I don’t even understand how we have such a unhealthy unnatural diet.

acgill March 19, 2016 at 12:50 pm

I agree! When you grow your own, you know where it came from and you can choose to not spray it with chemicals. Homegrown food also tastes awesome!

swhitfield April 2, 2016 at 3:28 pm

yes agreed! organic stuff is more expensive, but doesn’t have all those chemicals. What is gross to think about is Mcdonald fries staying the same and not rotting or spoiling after YEARS, that tells you right there how much chemicals go into making fries. Any REAL food will spoil.

JPrichard April 7, 2016 at 12:29 am

Very true. I’ve been eating a lot more healthy foods and when i wake up every morning i feel so much better, its worth choosing healthy foods over junk food.

Ashleigh W. July 15, 2016 at 5:18 pm

Its so nice to grow your own veggies because you know exactly who is handling your food!

JessyM July 25, 2016 at 11:41 am

I think growing your own foods is a great solution, however; some people do not have the time it takes to tend to these gardens, or the space to grow their own food.

haley14 October 7, 2016 at 2:13 am

that’s a good outlook on it, less to worries, but you should know whats in the dirt you do use to grow your own?

wslaughter February 14, 2017 at 1:10 pm

I agree! It can be a fun AND beneficial hobby to grow your own organic produce!

mbarrett2289 April 12, 2017 at 3:46 pm

We are in the process of building a house and we will have a small garden in the back on our land. I’m excited to learn how to cook using what I grow.

H.Robinson April 11, 2018 at 9:48 pm

I can second that, except from experience you normally do have to use some kind of pest control on your garden food plants. But there are many different types of sprays that can be used, some of them all natural.

MandyL777 July 18, 2018 at 11:23 pm

I wish I would make the time to grow my own food. I definitely like the idea of knowing EXACTLY what it is the food I am eating.

tnewborn August 27, 2018 at 8:27 pm

I agree with you, because my dad uses nothing on his vegetables and I taste the difference

Cwatkins7091 November 6, 2019 at 2:28 am

I have always wanted to grow my own fruits and vegetables but I would have to overcome my fear of bugs and other creatures first.

bblair5154 November 5, 2023 at 9:23 pm

This I totally agree with that’s why I plan to grow my own veggies this year.

vvaldes1222 May 1, 2015 at 9:51 pm

It is very true that the healthy things are expensive. So, growing your own fruits and vegetables would save you so much money.

Reply

Megan moore February 24, 2016 at 11:55 pm

pretty much everything is expensive now days but there is nothing we can do about it really. ITs just something we have to live with. No matter if your buying a box of straw berries or a bag of grapes, it’s all going to be expensive.

reagonj March 9, 2016 at 3:05 pm

its ridiculous that they tell you to eat healthy when everything healthy is so expensive.

Kaycie Bullion April 6, 2016 at 3:39 pm

I hate that heatlhy foods are so costly! It’s all about the fast food industry.

DGPatton November 2, 2016 at 8:15 pm

It doesn’t make sense does it? Aren’t many unhealthy things just healthy things turned bad? So why is the source more expensive.

drandle November 2, 2016 at 11:21 pm

They are! I would like to buy organic but just can’t afford it. I am very lucky my parents have a garden that I get to raid whenever I’d like.

Co94dy7 April 10, 2017 at 5:31 pm

Plus all the hard work will pay off with truly organic plants

nwade November 8, 2017 at 9:45 pm

Yes, I think growing your own veggies is very important and a lot more healthier than buying produce.

mdiaz2949 March 13, 2018 at 4:06 pm

That is so true, but often people are too busy to tend to their garden, so their plants die, or just do not produce enough. I would love to grow my own vegetables and fruits but I just do not have the time.

Stephanie Rogers April 11, 2018 at 5:18 pm

It can be very difficult to eat healthy when the healthy food is way more expensive then the frozen or fast foods.

hannapatrick July 18, 2018 at 8:08 pm

Yes, food is expensive but it is also difficult to grow your own garden. My family has tried to several times and certain things grow really well while others just die.

Catapult1 November 7, 2018 at 10:09 pm

I own my own vegetable garden. It is a lot of work and very tedious. We spend so much time in it when it is growing season. I can not really say that gardening is cheap but what I can say is that it is a lot of fun and very enjoyable.

ggilb23 October 11, 2023 at 3:42 pm

I wish healthy foods weren’t so expensive but that’s just the economy. I grew some tomatoes this summer and it was easier saving money on those I noticed than paying for them now.

yhogan November 8, 2023 at 7:04 pm

If being healthy is the way to go, why not make it more affordable to buy fruits and vegetables and not less nutritional food? More people could be eating healthier.

dobrien June 3, 2015 at 3:11 pm

I completely agree with you, if you eat unhealthy well there you go, and if you eat healthy well then you’ll be healthy.

Reply

dobrien June 3, 2015 at 3:16 pm

I’ve recently started buying more organic and healthier foods, and yes they are more expensive, but they’re also better for me and a lot cheaper than a trip to the hospital would be if I were to ever become obese or diabetic or have osteoporosis, or any other number of things and also I’ve always been encouraged the quantity is better than quality and that is how I shop and I truly feel healthier for it.

Reply

Agnes Turner July 3, 2015 at 3:28 pm

I agree with you. The hospital bills cost much more than buy and eat healthy food. I keep telling my co-workers who are much younger than me. They should pay attention what they eat and watch the portion. Of course, do exercise. Simple.

Emily November 29, 2015 at 12:42 am

This was a great way to look at this issue… I’m always complaining about how the organic foods that are good for us are so expensive. But if you weigh out the cost of the hospital and Dr bills you could possibly have if you don’t eat the healthy organic lifestyle, the organic food isn’t very expensive at all is it! 🙂

sparrish March 16, 2016 at 11:08 pm

I’m with you! Buying organic isn’t even a choice anymore – it is required. And also buying in bulk, or from wholesale companies will definitely save us some money. I was impressed by this video and plan to go to his blog site, UltraWellness.com/blog. He makes a lot of sense to me!

kneal October 16, 2016 at 9:14 am

Initially it is more expensive to go organic but in the long run you save money with less doctor visits, less medications, and general better health.
also you need quality food not quantity. good local produce is better than produce that is shipped thousands of miles and is refined and processed.

hlong1 October 18, 2016 at 1:04 pm

I hate that healthy foods are so expensive! Being on a budget makes it hard to buy healthy foods.

bjohnson November 9, 2016 at 10:17 pm

Although the price of organic food is a bit higher, it is worth the money to possibly prevent the risk of a health disorder. I like the thought of organic foods and am unsure of the GMOs that are on the market today.

Kyle Cash July 18, 2017 at 1:50 pm

I agree with you. it’s definitely worth the extra dollars to avoid medical problems. But you can find ways to save money My family is growing tomatoes and cucumbers this year and it’s not hard or expensive so growing your own food is a good option. We also go to a place called the produce shed where we buy enough corn, peas, butter beans for a year and its like $150 so look for places like this in your area.

A Diehl November 9, 2019 at 11:19 pm

Food is expensive but it is also difficult to grow your own garden. My family has tried to several times and certain things grow really well while others just die.

Ashleigh W. July 14, 2016 at 10:51 pm

Good luck on the garden. I think it is a wonderful idea to start one!

wslaughter February 14, 2017 at 1:12 pm

mhardage3 April 10, 2017 at 5:47 pm

I am trying to get my mom to regrow her garden also. My dad has found how amazing fruit trees are so our whole yard is covered in apple, peach, plum trees….

mjones13 April 11, 2017 at 11:52 pm

Watch out for melon bugs and tomato worms if you try to grow any type of fruit. They really ruin my garden when they show up.

hcrabb November 6, 2018 at 9:25 pm

A garden is the way to go! Not only will you be creating your own nutritious, chemical free fruits and vegetables, but the joy of being outdoors and sharing fresh wholesome food with people you love is a joy all on its own. I planted my first fall garden this year full of kale, spinach, pumpkins, cabbages, and peas. My first pumpkin is growing as we speak! It really is amazing to plant something from a seed and watch it grow. And the health benefits are well worth it!

Lindsey Thompson November 9, 2015 at 6:10 pm

I agree growing our own food has so many benefits. Savings, health benefits with exercise and let’s don’t forget a good dose of Vitamin D we will receive by being out in the sunshine! It’s interesting to think about how much longer people lived years ago when gardens were grown and they were more active working the land and eating fresh from the garden.

Lcatlett November 8, 2017 at 11:32 pm

If I knew what I was doing with growing my own produce, I would definitely consider it. There would definitely be the cool factor of you growing your own food and I believe it would make it more appetizing. And it is kinda funny how ” we are what we eat” actually has some truth behind it!

Fortunately for me, I’ve got the area that I would need to try to grow some things, if I choose to, and then I would know exactly what I was getting. Plus, I’m sure that I would get more satisfaction, knowing that I made what I am eating.

Good info! I did not know that too much insulin could cause all of those medical problems and diseases. When you put foods that contain so much fat and calories in your body, you don’t get the results that you are looking for. It’s almost as if you are what you eat! I feel you should always make sure you eat plenty of fruits and vegetables!

This video had a lot to say about not only the food we choose but also the way it was grown , the distance it was transported , the air and soil conditions where originated and so much more. I’m glad that he wasn’t against a vitamin supplements. Our foods and food-sources aren’t the same as in our grandparents day but with extra care we can make the best choices from what is available to us and what we can afford and supplement these choices to balance the lack.

Reply

Gina Jones July 27, 2016 at 8:43 pm

Yes and normally we don’t think about those factors. My doctor told me that if I eat fruits and vegetables, I don’t need vitamin supplements. This would cause too many of them in the cells, which can be harmful. So because our food is not as “pure” as it was in the past, we should try to grow our own or purchase organic food.

It’s insanely scary how genetically altered and precessed our food is today. Chickens are given hormones so they grow larger and produce more meat and therefore, we ingest these hormones. I strongly believe that processed/genetically altered foods play a large part in the growth and development in our children. The sad part is…it is easier and cheaper to buy the processed crap than it is to buy whole, natural foods. Isn’t that ridiculous? I think it is.

Honestly, this guys drives me crazy! Good information. Carbs are good for you, because they provide our bodies energy. Nutrition is very important to healthy living. The adkins diet was the worst diet that came out with their “no carb” diet. As long as we don’t over consume we will be great.

Reply

eramsey4317 April 11, 2017 at 6:13 pm

Dr. Mark Hyman with the Cleveland Clinic has stated, “Our bodies require essential amino acids to build proteins and essentially fatty acids to function properly – yet there is no such thing as an “essential” carbohydrate.”
Your statement about Atkins being a “no carb” diet is very misconstrued. To truly be on a no carbohydrate diet, one’s diet would only allow fats and meats. I follow a LOW carb diet (not necessarily Atkins). When choosing carbs, I choose healthy carbs such as fruits or vegetables. I avoid wheat and potatoes, but I still eat carbs. Just not a high amount. My doctor approves and encourages me to continue with it and I have had nothing but good benefits from it so far.

Carbohydrates are the most important foods, but not just any carohydrate, but the ones found in plant foods. These foods contain all the vitamins and minerals we need, and they help keep us balanced by slowing down the absorption of sugars and fats.

This video summaries what we’ve studied all semester–we are what we eat. The more “real food” we consume, the better our bodies will respond physically, mentally, and emotionally.

We need to consume more “real foods” such as fresh vegetables, whole grains, nuts, fruits and eat less “processed” foods.

We need to live by the 3 principles mention: 1) eat foods; 2) but not too much; and 3) eat mostly plant foods.

By eating the right foods and maintaining our basic nutrients, we can feel better, decrease mood swings, improve our mental sharpness, maintain proper body weight, and decrease our chances of developing chronic illness.

Every aspect of the choices we make affect our bodys, our life, and our future. What we put into our bodys is exactly what we get out. I have to agree that the most powerful medicine in the world is food because it determines us physically, mentally, and our life.

I do believe that earthy, unprocessed foods are best for us. I love me some vegatables and fruits. They are the absoulte best coming out of my daddy’s garden. His famous strawberrys make my mouth water. But due to the fast pace world that we live in its hard to actually keep a full garden maintained or even take the time to cook a healthy meal. Food manufactures are making it more convient for us though. But being a vegan is NEVER going to happen for me. Me and my family live off meat. Going without it for even a week/two gives me withdrawels.

It is amazing to me that it cost less to eat unhealthy and cost more to eat healthy? Thats an oxymorone in its self. Our economy is declining which makes our finacial state not at its best. Which decreases healthy eating which increases being overweight and obesity. From now on Im going to try to balance my eating habits with unproccessed whole grain, oats, vegatables, and fruits. In the end, you are the person responsible for what you have become.

Not only are we what we eat, most of us cannot afford to eat healthy, organically grown foods–which may or may not be truly organically grown. Unfortunately, millions of us do not have spreads of land to have animals to graze on good grass full of nutrients. Not many of us have a piece of land to grown our own veggies, much less room for an orchard or two or three. The simple ways may be best, but they are unattainable for the majority of us.

I agree that raw unprocess foods are the best for us but due to economic situations this is for the most part hard to obtain because food manufactures have made it more afordable to obtain these products through mass (canned) production.

Eat food not too much and get it from the earth. I wish…..but I am trying more and more each day to get back to the esentials because these videos are so very motivating. But then again the cost is a factor. Therefore the limits of what can be obtained are limmited to localy seasonal items and their availability.

Basic multi vitamines are very important. You need to look at the labels and take intop account your age as well as you gender in making the right choices. I counsulted with my pharamicist and he helped me in planing out what my needs were and I can tell a difference in just the last 2 weeks. So I know for a fact what he said here was for sure true!

Last week at the grocery store, I met an 80 yo woman checking her fresh produce at least 8 good size bags of fruits, vegetables. They were bagged with special tag. The checker was calling out the prices 59 cents, 69 cents. I commented she is getting good prices and if she is eating all that fruits, and vegetables she is eating very healthy. She replied she is making apple sauce, and pickling the cabbage and she is buying the produce for the poor and not ashamed of it.

I admired her attitude. We all could use this idea to stretch the dollar. Although I wonder how old the produce were and how much nutrient loss through time and storage.

Yes it is awesome that she would do that. But then again she is “old school” and probably is not up so much on the relevant nutrition information. I am sure that in her day that as long as it was fresh then it was the best. Which is still essentially true today, but there is a so called shelf life to everything 🙂

That is amazing! She is taking care of herself and others as well. Older people are such a wealth of knowledge about how to stretch a dollar and use resources wisely. I hope she has passed this knowledge down to the younger generations of her family.

I like this guy. I don’t think he took a breath at all within that 8 minutes but atleast he knew what he was talking about. I guess the old saying holds true that , “we are what we eat.” One more video could probably convince me to become a vegetarian. I don’t think eating just veggies would be that bad. Now I know what I’m going to tell my son when he does not want to eat his brocoli; they protect against toxins, you better eat them up. Ha Ha, but atleast it’s something new.

HAHA. I don’t think he took a breath either, but you’re right at least he did know what he was talking about.

I agree on this guy not taking a breath haha. I don’t think I can change to a vegetarian even though I now know what is happening to my body. I do eat many veggies though so maybe I will be okay; hopefully.

I agree 100% that what you put in your body is what you get from it. I love my veggies and fruit. I eat meat when I have to. I buy local produce when i can. But the cost is so insanely high that it is hard to eat well all the time.
Carbs, real whole foods like veg, fruits, oats, nuts and others. All my favorites.
This year I have grown my own peppers, tomatoes and leaf lettuce in pot. You should give it a try. Even in pot on a patio.

Got any tips on growing fruits and vegetables? I definitely do not have a green thumb but I’m going to try next spring and I agree about the price of food. I wonder with the recommended amounts, how much it would cost for us in a day? Probably more than what I spend. A gallon of milk is pretty much the same price as a pack of cigarettes, now what kind of message is that?

Cost is definately a problem in todays society….but then factor in the cost and the toll of what is happening to our bodies over time because of the foods we are putting into them. Scary any way you look at it…ha

yes i strongly agree with the fact that cost has a lot to do with wheather one eats healthy or not.almost all the unhealthy low grade foods in the shop are unhealthy.

J-H March 4, 2011 at 2:17 pm

It is very costly to buy some of the more healthier foods that you need to stay healthy why is that?

GilesCN November 15, 2011 at 10:54 am

I agree it is very much so what we eat and put into our bodies! Cost may be a problem but it is not always the problem!

TMann November 19, 2011 at 3:35 pm

I also agree. It is scary what we eat sometimes because it fits in our lives. In the long run the cost will be more if health problems occur but also its either eat what you can afford or don’t eat at all. Sad situation but reality

I need to start eating more fruits and vegetables. The saying is right you are what you eat.

So true! It’s unfortunate though. Every now and then I enjoy eating unhealthy.

Jicaldw October 11, 2019 at 11:09 pm

I agree that cost is a major factor when trying to eat healthy. Truth is you can afford to eat right.
