The elderly are at a high risk for constipation, especially if they are unable to ambulate. Fiber is very important to them to prevent constipation. Almost every time a patient is admitted to the hospital, they are put on a laxative. That is because they are not up moving around like they usually are. It’s the same for the elderly that are confined to a bed.

Yeah my great grandma had meals on wheels. she would hardly eat i though. but we took good care of her though.

This is so true. Just had two aunts 77 and 75 yrs of age with constipation problems. Not enough fluids.

Reply

LSB62 February 1, 2018 at 11:10 pm

I agree and lots of elderly that live in nursing homes don’t get the proper amount of fluids needed due to not being able to feed themselves.

HunterMcWhorter February 24, 2016 at 10:41 pm

also they are at a high risk of constipation because they do not move around as much as they use to.

Morgan Long March 8, 2017 at 10:58 am

I agree with this statement because the older you are you just don’t get to be as active as you once were.

lefj1979 February 24, 2016 at 10:46 pm

constipation can change a elderly persons whole mental status.

Reply

lmitchell March 2, 2016 at 9:02 pm

You are absolutely right! Constipation can cause changes in mental status for just about anyone, but we do have to consider the older folks especially because some of them can’t communicate to tell us what’s wrong, for example if they have dementia or have had a stroke and can’t speak for themselves like they once were able to.

klane September 21, 2018 at 9:25 pm

Constipation and UTI can cause elderly people to act differently then they normally would.

laureneleslie February 28, 2022 at 8:28 pm

oh yes 100% as people get older sometimes their mental health goes with it as well, and memory and common sense. Sometimes it is medical conditions and sometimes it’s due to intake and their digestive tract.

knichole March 2, 2016 at 10:10 am

I can see where you are coming from, and it is a good idea to make sure the older people have what they need and make sure they get enough of it.

I totally agree. Both of my grands had low fiber and had to take prescription vitamin d and fiber.

sgerhardt September 6, 2016 at 8:20 pm

I agree. Fiber is important. A lot of elderly aren’t able to chew or digest the fiber rich foods they need. Benefiber is great. But the main thing we can do to help them is to encourage water intake. We can give them fiber, but that in turn means we must increase fluid intake. 🙂

Reply

jdurfee October 8, 2016 at 1:23 am

Using benefiber as one beverage is start with the fluid intake!

hubence September 29, 2018 at 9:40 pm

I wonder why they didn’t mention any fiber supplement, since they did recognize that seniors don’t like to eat much and need more fluid intake.

Molly Harvey September 7, 2016 at 2:44 pm

I agree with you completely. I am a nurse that works on a cardiac / renal unit which consists mainly of geriatric patients. We not only see a decrease in mobility, but also because my patients are usually compromised r/t fluid overload, they do not or are not able to get the recommended daily amount of water either. As a common practice, we give them either Miralax, MOM, Metamucil, or Senna, and always a probiotic when antibiotic therapy is initiated.

Yes the elderly need fiber but it just as important with high fiber diets that you are very hydrated to help all that fiber work on moving the bowels.

Reply

mhardage3 February 22, 2017 at 7:27 pm

elderly people need just as much nutrients. That’s probably why they get sick so easily is because they do not eat enough nutrients to help their body.

aperet1 February 28, 2018 at 11:49 pm

Yes but I think the water will pass through and the fiber will actually get things going, specifically peristalsis of the colon. But they both have a high impact on defecation.

kwomble March 2, 2017 at 3:01 pm

I agree, fiber is so important for an elderly person who can’t get up and there are so many people that come into the ER and even have to have surgery because of this. So important!

Reply

eramsey4317 March 8, 2017 at 1:24 pm

I agree with you. FIber is so important for the elderly to have in their diets weather it is in a fortified food or if it is a supplement.

I work as a nurse tech in a rehab hospital and all of our patients are on some kind of stool softener to help prevent constipation.

Reply

tperkins October 11, 2017 at 5:55 pm

You are correct. I guess as being young right now I fail to think about how it is and how difficult it is to eat well and have your body respond the way it should do to less physical activity going on in your daily walk.

Reply

lmehalic March 5, 2018 at 9:37 pm

I think like this too. I’m young so I feel like I have plenty of time to do better. Just like anything though, your body adapts to the way you treat/nourish it and if you are failing it will only hurt you in older age.

cfields2 October 11, 2017 at 9:58 pm

I agree. Fiber is very important.

My grandparents have this problem. They do not get up and move around so it is hard for their digestive system to work properly. they constantly take laxatives, but sometimes it is not enough.

Reply

ycanasramos February 24, 2018 at 1:54 am

I agree with you. As we age our body functions change. Constipation is very common amongst elders but sometimes is not because they are not eating enough fibers. Also, constipation can be for the overuse of laxatives, not being active, and some meds have this effects especially iron pills, pain pills etc.

Reply

bcox2 March 1, 2018 at 9:42 pm

elderly have greatly improved from programs such as meals on wheels and what not. If they are educated enough that they know how much a walk out side is for them mayb they will try to do so.

My hat goes off to programs like meals on wheels. So many times the elderly get left in memories and not kept up with in the present time. They need a little more attention than what they get.

Catapult1 October 11, 2018 at 1:32 am

I totally agree; if the nutritional needs for the elderly became common knowledge then people will be able to do more for themselves and their family members. They might also be able to take preventative measures on some ailments that plague the elderly.

Meals on Wheels is a blessing to our seniors. I have worked in geriatrics for almost 20 years now, and i have seen the decrease in appettite and lack of nutrition. Loss of independence and functionability i believe have a direct affect on how well some seniors diet needs are met. There are supplement drinks, puddings and a few other things available as well that help with nourishment.

I agree with you about meals on wheels. I am glad they have this program to help with the seniors. not everyone have family they can depend on.

SRogers February 17, 2018 at 1:30 pm

I agree, I have friends that deliver for meals on wheels and they say it is a rewarding experience. Many older people, such as my grandmother, who has a harder time trying to cook a meal could benefit from such a program as meals on wheels. Many older people often end up eating junk food because cooking a healthy meal is hard for them, so they turn to processed foods. They end up not getting the nutrients that they need in order to stay healthy, thus hurting their health.

Kaylee Gibson March 7, 2018 at 10:53 pm

There is a meals on wheels program right down my road and every Tuesday and Thursday they send boxes out to the seniors.

I think the senior meals is an awesome program!!! They really need this and deserve it! They are easily forgotten, and it is really sad. A lot of times these seniors don’t have much of an appetite and even forget about the simple task of eating enough and it really has a very negative effect on their health and can be deadly. And because they are often alone like in a widow situation, they don’t cook just for themselves. I also think supplements are a huge necessity for seniors! And when they can’t eat a lot and have much access to food it is very important for them to have access to drinks like Ensure, because they are great for getting the nutrients necessary in one convenient can. My daughter even went through a phase where she wasn’t wanting to eat much, but she loved and still does love the Pediasure drinks. She calls them her “energy drink”. 🙂 This may have also came from her staying with my grandma 2 days a week and they always had some of those on hand.

Reply

jkehler January 29, 2015 at 11:58 pm

As you mentioned above, sometimes elderly literally forget to eat, particularly if they are widowed. This happened to my mother after my dad died. She always says its too much trouble to mess up the kitchen to just cook for one. She eats small meals like grapes, cheese, and crackers, or cottage cheese and peaches. There have been instances when I’ve asked what she had and after thinking about it she admits that she just forgot to eat anything that day. One thing that helps stimulate appetite is interaction with others. Eating is such a social activity for us. You invite someone to go out and eat with you, or to come over for dinner. Birthdays and anniversaries are often celebrated over a meal. A boss may acknowledge employees by bringing a cake or cookies. Because many friends and family members have died, often the elderly population doesn’t have many people in their close circles to eat or socialize or celebrate with.

I agree this is an awesome program! I think it is important to note that some elderly people also lose their mate and when that happens the adjustment is so difficult that they stop eating, cooking and participating. The Meals on Wheels provides human contact for those people that may be lonely and/or forgotten.

I really liked this video. I believe older people do need to take in more vitamins and minerals. My grandparents always were lacking some. They never wanted to drink much milk or take any supplements for it. After watching this video, I’m glad to know that they need as much as we do, and it was very informative.
Also, I learned fluid is very important to keep from dehydrating.
All in all, this information was very useful!

I just re-watched the first video on the importance of certain items as you age like calcium, fiber, and fluids in general. I know my grandma always has trouble going to the bathroom and she also has stomach issues a lot. A number of my elderly patients do as well and I always emphasis to them the same things stated in the video. Fiber and fluids are so great for the digestive system as well as magnesium.

I am happy to see that there are programs out there for our senior citizens. Its not easy to get 100% of what you need in your diet especially for senior citizens who don’t get around very well without help.

I’ve known about the Meals on Wheels for years and I think it’s a wonderful program, so many elderly people rely on it, and greatly need it. You can tell from the video they are very appreciative of getting these balanced meals, and it’s sad to think what would they do without this program, I hope it continues forever.

I agree with you. I would be so sad if they there wasn’t programs like this to help with the elderly people. More people need to be willing to make sure these people get the help and meals they need.

This is why its so important to treat our kids right because they’ll be making the decisions about our care in the latter part of our lives, lol. In all honesty though this is a very sad problem and would be very hard pressed to say that it wouldn’t make anyone with a heart want to get involved. I am glad however to see that there are many programs trying to help with this situation. I’m just glad that I was able to be there for my parents and hope that my kids will be there for me and my wife. I do know people who are in good health and in their 60’s who don’t have a support system, what will they do when the time comes for them to need constant care?

I am happy that there are alternatives for senior citizens. If you know someone today that needs a little extra help with eating some healthy foods, cook them a meal and take it to them! We need to take care of our old folks!

I have to say that I admire the Asian population that takes care of their parents and grandparents. It seems sometimes that we send our elders to a retirement home and forget about them. The healthier that we can keep them through nutrition; the healthier that their minds and bodies will stay for many years to come

This is so true my grandmother is almost 90 and we couldn’t do the nursing home. She’s actually very healthy except she has Alzheimer’s and is unable to remember how to take care of herself. We decided to get home health care round the clock, unfortunately not everyone can afford to do this but I’m so glad that we are able to. She lives right beside me and my mom lives across the street so we are able to go check on her and visit with her anytime we want.

I hate how the elderly are not appreciated like they should be. So many people just shove them off and give them to some government agency and think that they are going to be taken care of. The elderly need different types of food to give them strength and it is completely different to my needs. I love the elderly and know that they are more important and should be seen as such.

I was so saddened to see all the reasons that seniors don’t have adequate food resources. The meal program for seniors is a phenomenal concept and I am so thankful there are groups like this that help senior adults with things we take for granted everyday.

It is very important for someone to shop with the elderly if you think they may need assistance. i think all these factors play a big role in the health of many seniors. Many may think they know best but will still need a hand in selecting the best for them.

It’s sad that that these people have no one to care for them or to spend time. Senior meals on wheels is a great organization, I’m very glad to hear about it. Plus the people get healthy meals, and to spend time with other seniors at the center.

It is so sad to think that some people can not get up and around to cook their own meals and if it wasn’t for Meals on Wheels they would starve. I think it is a great program. I think it has a lot to do with weakness, some just can not get out and go shopping or cook. Elderly people should not be living alone unless they can prove that they are stable.

I think Meals on Wheels is the greatest idea ever. My grandfather was a recipient of Meals on Wheels for a while. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s almost ten years ago and since then it’s been a steady and sad decline in his health and well-being. He stopped cooking for himself and his appetite was basically non-existent. He is now in a nursing home receiving day to day care but I remember worrying about him eating all the time and getting what he needed to maintain his health and vitality. I like what these people do for our seniors at these centers because they do get lonely, especially when they’ve lost someone or just have nothing and nobody to talk to. It gives them social time which is something they need.

cgreene February 25, 2014 at 7:31 pm

I agree with you. These types of programs are especially a godsend for the elderly who are unable to due for themselves due to illness. My grandma was a recipient as well after her stroke as she couldn’t get around to do much for herself let alone cooking. Of course, family help with meals and daily needs but, as you mentioned, programs like this are good social fill-ins for seniors who actually have the opportunity to interact with caregivers other than family and friends. I know my grandma was very thankful for their assistance.

Meals on wheels is such an amazing thing! And if I was elderly, I probably wouldn’t want to cook for just myself. I do realize that I need nutrients as a senior, but it’d be hard to reach the expected amount.

I agree the healthier foods are more costly than the others. It is very sad but its true that is for sure. Fast food places can make a cheeseburger and fries for a dollar but a grilled chicken salad is about 7$..?

Reply

kbeard7948 February 23, 2014 at 11:40 pm

I completely agree. The $1 burger is much more affordable than the $7+ salad. People can’t afford to eat healthy anymore, so they simply don’t or can’t.

I think everyone know seniors need extra nutrients; calcium, fiber, etc. I learned that some fibers can lower cholesterol and there are vitamin B-12 injections available. I love to see meals on wheels. I feel that is one of the best organizations around. Like the people said in the video once you get old it’s not easy to just go out to the store especially on a fixed income. Knowing that people can prepare a well balanced meal for people in need is beyond a blessing!

As someone stated in a comment, its really sad that the reason seniors are not getting the foods they need is due to income. Also I have worked in places that are mostly seniors and they tend to eat only the things they like or are used to eating. They are easily presuaded to eat more nutritious food if they are presented in such a way to make it look good.

I think our generation is one of the first to really start analysing what we put into our bodies. This group we refer to as seniors, never thought about all the potential dangers of fast food or artificial preservatives and sweeteners. I think that morally they are probably a better class of people than we are today. This would make them more apt to trust the word of their health care provider or food supplier. We have become curious about everything with google at our fingertips. Our seniors are usually not so quick to look something up just because. I think that their are alot of nursing homes and senior comunities that get by with the bare minimun. That is whats truely sad to me.

Seniors I know focus on calcium and fiber. I know several from work, church, and the gym. They have commented that if they focus on consuming calcium and fiber from natural foods, take a good multivitamin, and stay active, they maintain/improve their overall health.

I so agree with you! We don’t even have to be involved in an organization to help. We all have an elderly family member or neighbor that need a little help. I used to live next door to a sweet little old lady that would not eat like she should so that she could make sure her little dog Annie had enough to eat. I just couldn’t take that when I realized her situation, and I started to buy extra dog food “since it was on sale” and take to her. I would throw in that little fib because she didn’t want to accept the help otherwise. It was a small thing, but sometimes a small thing is all it takes to really help someone.

Its sad but if you are not turning six figures your barely treading water.

I agree. It is very sad and we do need to do better as a country. There are so many benefits available to seniors but I believe that this isn’t always known to them. Most applications are online these days and that is another obstacle that seniors face when trying to get assistance. Programs need to be more user friendly to encourage seniors to take advantage of them.
