Yes, we Americans are getting heavier. Well, it’s so easy to gain weight because we have so many quick and easy options. We have fast food, take-out, TV dinners, all the junk food we could ever want, and it is all cheap or in reach. In fall of 2009 I weighed 165 lbs. I was eating sausage, drinking large glasses of 2% chocolate milk every night before bed, I would even sit down and watch TV for hours. I was getting bigger and not even noticing. When I started back in college that year I took a Zumba class and a walking for fitness class. I started watching what I was eating. No more sausage, ice cream, junk food, and I increased my water intake. Another thing I did was give up TV. When that semester was over I weighed 135 lbs and had so much energy. I looked good and felt great. I am maintaining my weight and eating better. I do cheat sometimes though, usually when I am not drinking my daily amount of water. If I keep my water intake high I notice I am not as hungry during the day. I don’t drink sodas either. You can do it if I can. Life without TV is great. I have more time to do other things like enjoy my children.

I truly believe obesity starts in the home and its biggest problem are parents. Parents are suppose to train and teach their children what to do. This includes their eating habits. I was allowed to say no to vegetables growing up and today i still don’t like them for a number of reasons. Parents need to do their job and teach their children the healthy ways to eat. The second video was pretty neat to see all the comparisons. I have also heard instead of putting your food on the table, keep it in the kitchen and just go through like a buffet because like the woman said if its in front of you, you will eat more.

I could not believe the statement that beacuse of obesity, this generation that im included in wont live as long as say our parents generation. This is a scary fact. i was unaware just how effected this generation has become. i thought it was just hype. i also couldnt believe that women are more prone than men to become obese. The studies on portion control are mind boggiling. I guess most people get lost in the constant change of the norm that they just by the next biggest, best thing, myself included.

Size does matter…..I have realized since being sick with a stomach ulcer and gall bladder problems, that everyone over eats!!! I was sitting at a pizza place watching all the people around me eat 10-15 pieces of pizza!!!! I ate 2 my stomach hurt SO bad I could barely finish the second. Then they got dessert! I could not believe how many calories they were eating, and did not even realize it!!! Super size is the worst thing for our society!

I am not overweight but I really do not watch what I eat either. What is up with all these college students going to these diet doctors? Why not try on your own or are we just to lazy?

I have heard it takes 20 mins for your stomach to send signals to your brain to tell it your full. Thats amazing so if you keep eating your over filling your body and you feel sick to your stomach and misreable.

I have always been overweight. Upon checking my BMI, I am considered to be obese. I do not feel obese, just a little heavy. This may just being me in denial. I do blame some of the extra weight on the convenience of fast food and bigger portions, but not all blame lies there. I do have the option to say no to plus sizing and I can always exercise. s-g

One thing that I did not know that was being obesity affected your lungs? I knew that it affected your Cholorestral, but was really suprised about the lungs. Woman have more of a chance of being overweight than men do. That was another detail that I did not know. I am not overweight, matter of fact i am at my BMI. I do eat out and hardly ever drink water, so I think a lot of it has to do with your body not only the food you eat. But then again my husband is overweight and diabetic, and stays on diets all the time, so I really think your body has a lot to do with your weight not just the foods you eat.

i think food choices and eating habits are build into a child. Most children learn by examples. They pick up the smallest bad habits from parents. As parents it is our responsibility to introduce healthy foods to our kids so that they can grow healthy and be able to make better judgemnts when it partains to food choices.Childhood obesity is at an increase and if something is not done really soon,i wonder what the future holds towards the health of our obessed kids.It is up to us to do something and do it now!!!!!!!!

Luckily my kids have a mother that buys fruit, and vegetables, and cooks them from scratch, we have a garden, and whenever I can make foods from scratch I do. There are a lot of people that let their kids eat just whatever. They buy Fast Food every day. You are what you eat! And the main thing is drink water for thirst not cokes. I want my children to out live me and be healthy!

I favored the second video because I can relate to the over indulging group of people it was talking about. Now I may not eat foods that unhealthy but I still eat portions that are too large.

I can see how someone can have a unhealthy lifestyle. Today alot of people are on the go and it is hard to go home and cook a healthy meal. I am a college student,I work fulltime, and a mother of a 4 year old. Sometimes it is just convenient to stop a fast food restaurant and get a quick meal. The time I spend cooking can go to studying are spending time with my child. Now I know that it is unhealthy so we do not eat out as much. For families that just eat fast food everyday, I dont understand. I think all things can work out with moderation and responsible habits.

I completly agree with these videos just take a look around at people in this day in time, more than half are overweight. I belive we have done it to ourselves by the eating choices we make such as fast food. We are in such a hurrie these days everybody would just rather grab mcdonalds than cook a healthy meal. Also technology has made everything easier in this time and age people are becoming lazier as time goes on. I can see how people won’t live as long anymore because of obbesidy.

When I was a freshman at arkansas tech, i lost so much weight the first month. It was too easy not to eat because #1- i really couldn’t find time and #2- I couldn’t afford it. I started putting my normal weight back on when I was out of a bad relationship (stress overpowered my appetite), and got my priorities straight. But our eating habits needs to be just that- a priority. It is too easy to put what we eat at the bottom of the to-do list. I also need to start being more aware of the serving size of dinner- I definitely cook for at least five people, when there are usually only two that eat. Leftovers tend to be a good, quick lunch though!

Lindsey E September 14, 2010 at 2:46 pm

I just recently started trying to cook for just two. Before we would cook dinner and it would be enough for four. Now that we have learned to make our portions smaller we have began to eat less.

Obesity is a bigger problem in America than in other countries. I think that our way of life has contributed to this health problem. We are lazy, sedentary, and we think we’ve been cheated if we don’t get that extra large portion of food at a restaurant.

Obesity doesn’t run in my mom’s side of the family, but it is prevelant in my dad’s family. My dad was overweight and developed type II diabetes. Now, he has to watch what he eats and he’s really dropped some weight. He now looks better and feels better because he controls his sugar and carb intakes.

I know that diabetes can be hereditary. I know that I must begin now to control my diet and watch my weight so that I don’t develop this disease.

The videos are so very ture. Obesity in America is caused by people being lazy and not caring. This is no fixing this problem in my eyes unless the government changes.

Portion sizes really do have a huge effect on obesity. This is something that I have to be sure to watch carefully myself because the portion sizes given at restaurants are always way too much so I make sure to get to go boxes instead of eating the full amount given. I believe the large portions given in restaurants has helped in contributing to the 2/3 of Americans who are overweight.

Reply

Taylor B September 12, 2010 at 6:34 pm

I’m like you. I need to watch my portion size. When I go to the movies, I don’t have to order the jumbo-sized popcorn with the large drink. Instead, I should opt for the small popcorn without extra butter and a water! But where’s the fun in that!

obesity is a huge problem in the world today and when people get to be so overweight, the laziness of that person gets worse and worse so instead of busting your butt in the gym or eating right they will go get surgery to get rid of it so they lose the weight but yet they’re not really having to put forth a lot of effort.

Reply

J-W January 31, 2011 at 3:39 pm

If it weren’t for the surgeons giving anyone liposuction now-a-days, people would be forced to either stay overweight or work out and diet. I don’t blame only the surgeons though, it is also due to peoples’ laziness

in my opinion, most parents are highly influentioal about the food choices their children make. if parents spend 95% of their lives on fast foods their children will copy after them and that will be a practice through out their lives.parents sould be a role model and set a good example bye eating healthy, then we would not have to worry alot about unhealthy eating habits of the forth coming generations.

The first video was dead on with obestiy in America. I think alot of Americans just don’t care anymore and this way of thinking can be harmful or even deadly we need to start eating and yes is sounds good but will this really happen probally not. Our lifestyles are just too fast now and I do not belevie there is no slowing down.

I agree with the second video, I think that as long as its in front of us that we are going to eat. I think that you should maintain your weight before letting it become an uncontrollable problem. I know they say it’s a disease but we see people overcome it all the time. You just have to have the want to do it.

I know obesity is out of this world. So many people want to be healthy but they dont want to do the work to be healthy. Like in children when a child says they are hungry you can give them something healthy instead of junk food.

I understand about obesity being heredity. I fight it everyday, no matter what I do or how I eat I seem to stay the same. I look at my family especially my mother’s side of the family and they are all large people. My mom is what they call morbidly obese. It worries me because she is so short and weighs so much. I know she is just a heart attack waiting to happen. I made a vow to myself many years ago not to be like my mom, to the extent that in high school I was borderline anorexic. I would starve myself. I later had children and have been fighting weight ever since.

Comfort food, that is what both my grandmas would say, they always made enormous amounts of food and if you didn’t eat their feelings would get hurt. I find myself cooking the same way but have never forced my kids to eat a large portion. I believe how we eat has to do with how we are raised and it is up to us to change that. My children are grown and I tried really hard to teach them portion control.

Someone said this about obesity: “genetics represent a loaded gun but you have control of the trigger” I pondered about that a lot. It’s hard to change your environment when you’re young. I think the best thing you can do is to establish good eating habits of your own and be a model for your children to follow. We do pick up our parent’s habits whether we are conscious of it or not.

I knew that obesity was a big problem, but I didn’t realize that it affected so many people. I also knew some of the health risk of obesity but I didnt realize the were so many risk. After watching these videos i feel like I need to start exercising more. I think that obesity has become such a problem because it has become so easy. A lot of the foods that we eat such as fast food are so bad for you that it is easy to become overweight if you are not careful.

I agree, we just don’t think that it could happen to us. There are so many people struggling to lose weight and they shoudn’t have let it get that out of control. I think that we should excercise regularly to stay healthy instead of waiting until its too late.

Obesity is affecting 60 million people. Doctor’s are saying that obesity is considered a disease that has more health risk than any other. Affecting your blood pressure, cholestrol, joints, and determining if you will become a diabetic. More than 1/3 adults are obease and 1/3 overweight. The habits of parents and guardians affect their childern as well. 9 million childern are obease. It’s so sad to hear that this generation of childern will not live as long as their parents. These days we have bigger portions than what it use to be in the 60’s – 70’s. With a good role model, balance, small portions, and being active can help fight off obesity. It’s up to you who and what you become.

We tell our children to eat all of their food unless you don’t want dessert. This video has just made me want to change the way we are doing things. Our oldest children order meals from the adult menu when we go out and they are 10 and 7. Although they are very active and run it all off, the eating habit is not healthy. So, eat it up will start to take a backseat at our dinner table as well as how we order our food.

Reply

Donnie H. September 8, 2010 at 4:50 pm

That seems to be the American way of thinking today, if the body does not hurt then everything is fine. I believe we should always encourage our children to be active by being active with them. I often tell my wife and children that weight gain starts on the inside and by the time we see it on the outside, it is already out of control. Likewise, the results start on the inside; therefore, it will take a while to notice excise progress on the outside. To know that most of our children are overweight is heartbreaking because it will have a lasting affect on our generations to come.

I didn’t know that their was an epidemic because according to this video, there are about 9 million obese children and this generation of children may NOT live longer than their parents. This is shocking news and some I believe that some barriers need to be put in place just to save lives. I do believe that the process have already been set in place, soda machines were to be either taken out of schools or only offer caffeine or sugar free sodas. Yuck!! But something has to done.

I have a grandson who was a healthy normal child until he was forced on mind altering drugs. Now he is severely obese and they see nothing wrong with this. I am screaming heart attack by the time he is 17 to 20.
Sometimes its not the sodas and snacks. There are an alarming number of children in every school district in the USA who are forced onto these drugs.
Yes fast food is horrible. But sometimes its not all about the food.

I feel like a lot of people eat healthy and exercise just to be attractive to other people. Maybe that look is what’s considered to be attractive because it comes with being healthy. I’m not sure if as many people would be concerened with watching their weight if thin wasn’t the look. I just think a lot of people try to stay healthy for the wrong reasons. But that’s just my opinion. I want to be healthy for myself and the ones I love. And if I ever have children, I’m going to teach them healthy eating and exercise habits because I would love them and I want them to be healthy, and I certainly would not want to outlive them.

Obesity is a disease that affects everyone. The only way to prevent it is to establish a healthy and active lifestyle and stick to it. Even with all the problems that arise or the many lists of things to do we all should be able to set aside time to be active in some way each day. It is amazing to me that something that simple could actually save your life and people still do not make the time.

Gattis M September 26, 2011 at 8:32 pm

I completely agree. It not only affects the person who is obese but also their family. I understand that it is hard to change your habits but when your life is at risk and your children’s lives by example people should take note and try.

MEL June 2, 2010 at 7:58 pm

I don’t understand how people can allow themselves to become obese but at the same time I almost do. People have become so busy that they have no time for anything but work and when they aren’t working they don’t won’t to do more work by working out so they just sit around. Then there are some people who have had weight problems their entire life and had no one to tell them better or to help them get control so they just keep gaining through the years. But what I don’t understand is why would you let yourself get to the point where you are killing yourself? It’s really sad. And when parents are obese, then their children are picking up the habits and destined to the same destructive lifestyle. I think that more people should consider the seriousness of how they are affecting their and their famililes lives and make an effort to create a healthy lifestlye.

Jessica Brinsfield June 2, 2010 at 3:37 pm

Why is it that people that are over weight have a higher risk for type 2 diabetes? I should now answer but I don’t
I can see how people would allow themselves to become over weight because they said it themselves we live in a fast food society.
Our world has become an instant world the world was not created in a day nor was Rome built. So why do we have to be so hurried and not think about our lives and how important it is to exercise and eat healthy?
I know I need to eat healthier I just need to learn to say no to temptation.

Yes, obesity is a problem in this country and it is something you can change. In fact the year right before I had my son I lost 146 lbs. Half of my body weight…a size 6 at 5′ 9″ and it felt amazing inside and out. Even through the first 4 months of my pregnancy I was a size 8 and then I reverted back to old, comforting habits and I can assure you I never intended to do that. I loved being active and free from all the negative self talk but I had picked up my whole life and moved from Los Angeles to Hot Springs because I needed the support of my best friend ( who lives here now). I was going to be a single mom…I was scared and sad and angry so I ate…again. I was part of a group called Compulsive Eater Anonymous in California and it was how I lost the weight before. Now as I get ready to go go into battle again I hope to use the same very structures program…just this time it will be online and on the phone ( no group here).
As I read from even a post on here, often times people do not understand how someone could get so fat. Well, speaking for myself, I can assure you that I do not want to be fat and that if it were a matter of simply eating less, that is exactly what I would do…it’s a complicated cycle that some will always judge harshly. I just wonder if they think they are helping and if they know they are hurting?

Reply

Jessica Brinsfield June 2, 2010 at 3:45 pm

I understand you. I believe that you can be the size that you want to be.
being a single mom is hard and when you don’t have anyone around to comfort you like you need thats when the food comes in. I am not a single mom but my mom is and when she gets down and out she eats.
not a good habit but it comforts. (I think all women do it.)
We don’t have a group here like you were talking about but I know of a place that you might check on it called “Weight Watchers” some of my friends has done this and thay have lost but you have to stay consistent thats the hard part. but one of them that did keep consistent has lost a tremendiouse amount of weight it’s not very expensive I think it’s like 45.00 to get started and 15 a month. they have one in Malvern. check it out. I hope I helped I don’t want to sound mean. cause thats not what I feel. :))

Again, most of my family is overweight. I’m not making that an excuse for me; however, people learn and only know what they are taught. Yes! People can change and not follow their family partners but it can be tough. For example, like I said before I’ve always been in the way boat as most of my family. When I graduated high school three years ago, I was still overweight and I started college. What do college students eat? FASTFOOD!!! It’s so convenient! Take a study break and go to Taco Bell, McDonald’s, or Wendy’s. Then on days that I wasn’t at school, I was working all day and when you get off, you don’t feel like cooking. It’s a routine that’s hard to break. And when you come from a family that cooks “Soulfood”, when you do decide to cook, it may not be the best choices. It’s like a no win situation. It’s just sad to me how society sometimes characterizes overweight people and yet it’s their restaurants that are feeding us. They think we are lazy and eat all day. So not true!!! I hardly have time to eat because I’m so busy. I go to school 5 days a week and work the weekends. Absolutely, no break!!!! When I decide to have children, I will teach them proper nutrition, even if I’m still overweight!!!!!!

Reply

Beth Mcraven June 2, 2010 at 11:12 am

I understand just what you are saying about school and grabbing something to eat between classes. I wrote a paper for comp 1 where I referred to that strip of road with McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Taco Bell, and Burger King as temptation alley. I found the cost of the healthier choices to be at least double the value menu choices and when you are on campus five days a week, cost is a factor, not a justification. I also know how it feels to try and defend not being “lazy and sitting around eating all day”. I, however, fear it falls on deaf ears for a lot of people who do not struggle with their weight. I suppose it is difficult for others to sympathize because it is self inflicted.

I understand a healthy diet is best for you. It is not always possible though. The price of fruit and veg. are at an all time high. I can tell you for my husband and myself. It is cheaper to go to subway than to cook a meal, 10.00 for both of us and I have lunch for the next day. So is getting a chef salad from mazzio’s pizza, less than 10.00 for us both to eat. So, we eat out a lot. It is all about knowing what to eat at which place. I am healthy and most important. I am happy with me.

SAF June 1, 2010 at 2:32 pm

It is so true about how we eat. Work long days and then nobody wants to cook so its just easier to go to a micky D’s. Things would be much simpler if every one would just go home and cook healthy meals out night or have a big salad already made up at home and all you got to do is put some in a bowl. Fast food is just to convenient.

MCS June 2, 2010 at 12:53 pm

I agree with the fast pace world. Its almost as if we use “not having time” as an excuse to not eat healthy. We’re too busy to prepare food or think a few days ahead of what to cook the family for dinner.

I’m shocked to hear that this generation of kids will not live as long as their parents. I think thats just sad when it could all be prevented by eating right. I’ve seen many people die too young because of all their health problems but it all started from being obese.

I agree and you know it comes back to the parents. Just the other day I was listening to a woman talk about how her two year old eats double cheeseburgers. She said if he didn’t get one he throws a fit. Well how did he get that way you must have introduced one to him. It comes back to the way kids are raised and taught to eat. Like the video said ” family habits”.

When I was seventeen I dated a guy who had an seven year old brother who would eat more than me! He would even finish my plate of what I wouldn’t eat! What is worse is his parents thought it was ok and that he was just a normal active boy. Its just sad.

I agree that it is really sad, but I don’t agree with SAF. I think that there are plenty of people out there that were raised to eat well and exercise, but when they got out on their own things changed for them. That’s how it was for me, at least. I am now on my way of changing that and will hopefully revert back to the way I was raised easily.

i blame the parents for this. we feed our kids what is convenient for us. i have noticed that the children of today are inside alot more playing video games or stuck on the tube. at my childrens school in the after school program instead of a an apple or a yogurt the give them bags of chips. this is horrible to think that the same people that give our children these bmi screenings are the same people filling our youth full of junk.

I just don’t understand how people allow themselves to become so unhealthy. Everyone is saying that fried chicken can make you fat. And yet a person still eats it.Then sits in front of the tv all day wondering why they’re fat. I’m very fortunate that I’ve had only minor weight problems in my life. But I was also raised with a very active lifestyle and taught healthy eating from a young age. I wish everyone would do that with their children.

I am sure a lot of people feel that they should be more active or eat healthier foods, but the issue is that even though they feel that they should they are not putting it into action. After a while, it just gets out of control and then they are obese or overweight. The only way to fight obesity is through constantly and consistently getting up, being active and choosing to eat nutritiously. I have a problem with being consistent on eating healthy and working out like I should, but I am actively making a change.

I use to not ever have to worry about weight issues when i was in high school, however, now that im out of school im not as active. I haven’t changed my eating habit from high school till now and i have put on quite a bit of weight and am gettin a lil gut now. You have to have the “want to” to get up and workout or eat healthy. Sure foods that may be unhealthy might taste better and be more appealing but you have to look at what’s best for you and your family in the long run.

i dont understand either. I was brought up the same way and I dont see why parents aren’t providing a good example for their children by eating a healthy diet themselves.

I think its all about the flavor. People perfer that greasy taste over the bland baked or grilled flavoring. I perfer baked or grilled b/c I distaste the skin of a chicken. It just make me feel like I’m eating solid fat. Ewww.

In my private practice, I don’t see many people seeking for ways to eat better while they are feeling and looking good.
It’s when they are suffering from medical complications and obesity is a contributing factor. I guess it’s in our nature to not try to fix until our bodies say there is something wrong. I believe prevention is the best approach when it comes to health. It’s a lot harder to say than do.

LMM, the “Clean your plate…there are starving/…” mentality is still around. The danger here is that the boy is developing bad eating habit at such a young age. This may follow him for the rest of this life and may affect his children as well.
