I knew that alcohol could damage that liver because when we were younger that is how they scared us not to drink. It makes you wonder what a liver looks like after someone drinking their whole lives. My boyfriends dad was a bad alcoholic, I would love to take a look at his liver.

I was also scared not to drink so that I wouldn’t damage my liver. I would love to see a comparison between the two one day.

I think that would be cool to see. I wonder how come their livers are so damaged but don’t show many signs of a bad liver? My grandpa, and fiancé’s father, are both alcoholics and don’t show many signs at all.

I can tell you it looks pretty terrible. I had the opportunity to see a liver of an alcoholic man while I was interning in a hospital in Mexico. The liver had major cirrhosis, and it looked very different from the liver of a nonalcoholic person. It definitely encouraged me to not drink alcohol.

A main reason they don’t want people to drink when they are young is because their brain is not fully developed yet. At 21 most peoples brains are fully developed.

I was also told when I was younger that if you drink it would hurt your liver, although now I know that alcohol in moderation is okay.

I just think that the younger someone begins to drink the higher chance of developing liver disease in the future.

I think they say that to scare us away from drinking and developing alcoholism but like you said we have learned its okay in moderation. Just goes to say too much a good thing can be a bad thing

I never knew that alcohol kills every cell in the body. I always knew it was bad but that sounds really bad. I know lots of people who drink heavily and joke about how their liver hates them for all the damage they are causing it and then brush it off because they just think the liver will “get over it” or regenerate itself. what they do no realize is that the liver can only take so much until there is too much damage to fix.

About a year ago, my cousin accidentally overdosed on Tylenol and almost died of liver failure. Miraculously, she is completely better today and didn’t even require a liver transplant. I know Tylenol can be dangerous for your liver, but since Advil can be dangerous for your kidneys- being a kidney patient, I usually use low-dose Tylenol, but only when I really need it.

Reply

sboyett April 8, 2015 at 11:25 pm

I knew that Tylenol was hard on your liver but I have never heard of someone overdosing. You would have to take alot of it to overdose, wouldn’t you? I know a girl who takes 5 or 6 at a time. That has to be hurting her without her even knowing it.

ppendergrass June 21, 2016 at 9:30 pm

I was in the military, and I heard about many soldiers purposely or accidentally overdosing on Tylenol. You can take a few a day once in awhile, but it is becoming more common that people on long term Tylenol are coming down with liver problems.

EWalters October 10, 2015 at 10:52 am

Tylenol is the most common accidental overdose drug. I’ve seen it too many times to count. The max amount daily is 4g. People think it is not a dangerous drug, and will take more than is safe to try to alleviate pain.

Reply

Tylenol is actually a dangerous drug.

Hailee Cooper November 8, 2017 at 5:39 pm

Its scary to think that people cant see an immediate effect on their liver with taking so much Tylenol so they keep taking it because they don’t know.

kmclane1426 November 8, 2015 at 11:37 pm

I knew someone that almost over dosed on Tylenol as well. He had a real bad toothache and took a lot of pills. He had to have his stomach pumped and it almost caused kidney failure. This is when I realized Tylenol, even though it is the best pain reliever to take, can cause serious problems. This is why I have been trying to find healthy remedies to help with pains.

Reply

My family has both extremes- I had a grandpa who was an alcoholic and on the other side of my family, my great-grandpa was as well. We seem to have a predisposition to becoming alcoholic. I’m 20, and I’ve never even tasted any type of alcohol, but I have decided to never pick up a drink because I never want to become an alcoholic. On the other extreme, my uncle (who is severely mentally ill) has dumped entire bottles of expensive red wine down the sink at family gatherings.

It is just crazy to me how someone can be a severe alcoholic and never experience any problems, but then others experience so many problems. Obvioulsy alcohol is not good for you, just wonder why it effects people differently.

I have an uncle who drank some when he was younger but since he has had kids 26 years ago he hasn’t had a drink. He eats healthy, runs marathons, does Not take protein supplements, but he is non-alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver. It’s apparently throwing the doctors for a loop because they have no idea what is causing it. Pretty crazy.

The liver is very important and it is somthing most people don’t think about protecting, but once you damage or distroy the liver it is to late to change. Change in lifestyle should come before a person destroys the cells in their liver. It is just like smoking everyone tells you what will happen but you really don’t listen until you receive the diagnosis of a disease from smoking. People just think they are invincible, but all along the damage is taking place.

The liver is an amazing organ in the way that it rejuvinates itself. It can take on a lot of harmful substances and bounce back. However, the hibitual use of any medications or alcohol can destroy it. There are so many people who don’t think it will happen to them or just block out the possibility that their pills can hurt them.

Reply

I know, it’s so sad that so many people are not aware of what they are doing to their body. Everyone needs to see this video. It’s awesome how the liver can bounce back after so many harmful things, but after awhile it will destroy.

Reply

Yes that is so true. The liver is a very unique organ in the body, but people do take advantage of the alcohol and drugs. If people would understand that once the liver is destroyed it is no turning back they would cut down on the excessive use of alcohol. Cirrhosis of the liver is not fun.

1. I did not realize that the liver was afected so much by insuline.

2. Oh I hate to think of my younger days when I drank more than one alcoholic beverage in an hours time. I wonder at what rate the liver recovers from uninhibited drinking from time to time? I have seen documentary films on drinking and the problems that arise from it. I recall that the Native American rece is one of the cultures that is predisposed to having problems with alcohol. More factors played into drinking alcohol than I had ever thought of. This video was very informative.

3. Again, tylenole is a bad thing for another organ (liver) not to mention alcohol. Alcohol is a killer where the liver is concerned, So I guess my second video question was answered. 🙁

It was amazing to me how alcohol is instantly toxic to every cell in the human body!

Fatty Liver Diease
The first video- I didnt really get a whole lot of information out of. It was hard to grasp what he was trying to say. But I did find out that when your liver becomes overprocessed with fat the enzymes spill over into the blood causing insulin resistance. The increase of enzymes causes diabetes. The higher the insulin causes the body not capable to lose weight.

Alcohol and the Body
I never knew that alcohol depresses the nervous system to your brain to your liver. One drink an hour is the appropriate amount to consume if more than the alcohol circulates through the body. I never knew that ethnicity had anything to do with how a person reacts to alcohol. Thats just different.

Improve Liver Function
Its amazing that the liver breaks down all chemicals that are thrown at it. To keep my liver healthy Im going to remove acetamenophen and reacting reagents.I never knew how critical and important the liver was until now. Great information!

Reply

Terrie H November 2, 2010 at 9:33 am

I don’t understand what ethnicity has to do with it. As for Alcohol and any other chemical the liver has to process. Yes, I knew that was a risk. You just have to realize anything you put in our body has a effect good or bad. It is up to you to know the difference.

Ethnicity and genetics have a lot to do with how our bodies tolerate and react to different chemicals. My family for example has a genetic predisposition for mental illnesses. I have not been diagnosed with any problems but I still have to be very careful what kinds of medications I take because they can effect me in really different ways. For example I can not take Night Quell to go to sleep when I have a cold because it will actually wake me up like a strong cup of coffee.

Reply

Debora M November 2, 2010 at 9:09 am

I have seen the affects of alcohol on the liver and its not a pretty site. I didn’t know that ethnicity had anything to with the liver and alcohol. Does that mean that some ethnic groups can drink more or less than others? I found that interesting. As for tylenol, I knew it was bad for the liver but what are people who are in pain all the time supposed to do? I take a lot of ibuprofen and bc powders, I wonder what my liver looks like.

I guess if we all would just eat a well balanced diet with few sweets and a lower amount of fats, we would probably be able to avoid becoming diabetic as well as avoiding liver disease.

I didn’t realize how many roles the liver plays in the body. Every video I’m more and more shocked at how each organ works together. I also didn’t realize the effect alcohol has on the liver.

Its crazy the damage alcohol can do to the liver. No one thinks about what they are doing to their body until it’s too late. And I agree, I think everything in moderation is true. At least that way, you aren’t causing so much damage to your body.

How to Improve Liver Function
Remove offending agent from the liver, removing tylenol, alcohol. I guess I need to stop taking acetamenophen then because I didn’t know it was wasn’t good for the liver. I thought I heard that aspirin makes the stomach bleed. Well, I still don’t like headaches or any other pain so, I guess tylenol every now and then would hurt.

I too was unaware that it was bad for the liver. I probably need to lessen the amounts I take too.

Alcohol and the Body
I knew that alcohol doesn’t work well for the body. This is a great video. When I first found out I was pregnant, the Dr. made it very clear that no alcohol was to be consumed…(something I already knew) but she showed be a picture of liver and then showed me a picture of an infants liver and she let me know that 2 livers were in danger and an infants liver would have the most damage. Most people don’t realize how small a infants liver is already, and then mixed with alcohol that’s a double wammy! Alcohol is good for any prego woman or any who can’t control the liqiuor.

Thats good that your doctor gave you a visual example. Not that it would help every woman but it may convince some to not drink.

I knew that being overweight could result in a fatty liver, I just didn’t know that it would cause increase enzymes and cause diabetes. I am just glad that it can be reversed with weight loss and extend the life expectancy of an obeses person.

I have an uncle that has been an alcoholic most of his life. I shutter to think of what his liver must look like…… and how disfunctional it must be.

I as well have an uncle who has been an alcoholic most of my life probably longer than that, I just don’t know. Everytime I see him he is extremely intoxicated, Im suprised he’s still alive honestly.

I didn’t realize that tolerance wasn’t really a thing. Makes me worry about my friends at uni a lot more.. Livers do an importance job and if you don’t take care of it the price can be massive. Prayers to all that are effected by liver disease and their families!!

I feel the same way about my boyfriends dad. He was a big alcoholic and he doesn’t drink as much now but it makes me wonder how his liver look and how functional it still is.

I’m sorry, I hope that he can kick the habit.

Its interesting how everything that happens can cause something else. For example, the leakage from the fatty liver can cause insulin resistance. I also wonder if they automatically test people for fatty liver if they are obese. well probably not because thats money!!!

I really didn’t realize how many functions the liver has until now.

Its definitely a complex organ.

daviste November 10, 2011 at 10:03 pm

It supposedly has over 600 functions and is one organ that can refenerate itself!!

I did not get much from the Fatty Liver Video because it was not in sync with what he was saying and was hard for me to pay attention I tried twice.

but the other two videos were intereristing, I did’nt know that you could only have a limited amount of Alcohol in an hours time thats wild, but the second video comfirmd it because he said that it kills the body cells I guess this is why when people drink alot that they end up on the liver transplant list.
I am thankfull that I don’t have a problem with drinking. I just don’t do it I like the parts the Lord gave me and I don’t want to ruin it by a short term fix.
so to keep my liver healthy I know that’s one thing I can do just say no.

I completly agree the first video was hard to understand and retain the information. I always wondered why alcohol was so bad on the liver and now I know why. Good post! Why do people still do things that they KNOW its going to destroy their body? Just doesnt make sense to me.

I agree completely I did not know at all that the affects of or alcohol itself was that damaging to the body I could not believe that it kills liver cells so quickly. I had always believed that a small amount would not hurt you but after that video I will know what not to do next time.

JEB July 8, 2010 at 5:51 pm

I was always taught that it was wrong and knew that it was not healthy but did’nt realize just how unhealthy it really was.

I did not know that alcohol was so toxic to liver and other cells in the body. I thought that having a small amount of alcohol like one drink every now and then was better than having alcohol everyday. But it seems that any amount is harmful to your body, especially your liver.

I had the same thought go through my mind and I might sound like a real idiot saying this after watching that but here goes any way. I think we hear often about all the things that are bad for us but that we still have to go on living. If I were to spend my life trying tp avoid all the things I am to avoid and doing all the things necessary to be healthy I am pretty sure that’s all I’d be doing. What I am trying to spit out is I think things like alcohol have to be done in moderation. There has to be balance in your life. You can’t eat cheeseburgers and fries everyday…not healthy, but every now and again…..ok..a night of a few to many with good friends once in a while……that’s life. What do you think?

I have always heard tylenol was bad for the liver, I guess now I know its true. Thats crazy how toxic alcohol is to the cells of the body especially the liver. Kinda scary to know all these people who go out and get wasted every weekend. I wonder what they’re liver will look like in ten years.

I agree i used to drink pretty much every weekend i don’t anymore but i never knew well i knew it was harmful but it kills cells everytime it passes through your body that is just crazy

I guess in order to find out if you have fatty liver disease a blood test is needed. I wonder if they automaticlly run that blood test if you are obese? Maybe only if you say you have found it imposible to lose weight. I worked at a gym for a while and I had some women, heavy women, say that they found it almost impossible to lose weight. I wonder if it was fatty liver disease/ I always reccommended that they ask their doctor.
What does ethnicity have to do with alcohol tolerance? Which ethnic group can tolerate more I wonder? What is it in the ethnic makeup that makes someone more tolerant…very interesting to me. I suppose I think of some stereotypes but I have never heard before that a particular group has a higher tolerance.
How much is too much tylenol? I take exedrine PM everynight., and tylenol fairly often.

QAL July 7, 2010 at 6:44 pm

I also wondered how ethnicity effected your tolerance for alcohol. I would not think that your ethnic background would cause you to have a higher or lower tolerance for alcohol. Wouldn’t your family background affect your alcohol tolerance more than that ?

JHR July 29, 2010 at 2:19 pm

I was thinking the same thing. How does ethnicity have anything to do with it?

Ashley M November 2, 2010 at 5:13 pm

Studies have showed that ethnicity has a little bit to do with alcohol tolerance. I never though heritage would have anything to do with that. It’s kind of strange.

well, i actually thaught alcohol tolerance is something that takes a while to develop , say over a course of time.depending on how much one consumes it and for how long..

Lacey H. November 26, 2010 at 3:21 pm

See thats what I thought but I see now that its not true. Glad I dont drink anymore because of all the things it does to the liver and other cells.

BLisenbey November 5, 2011 at 2:56 pm

I too thought tolerance was built up by a person depending on how much and how often alcohol as consumed. The same with any kind of tolerance. I guess there are a lot more factors at play that they just dont teach about.

dhogan November 11, 2020 at 7:20 pm

I agree, I’ll never knew how the ethnicity is with a little bit of alcohol tolerance.
