Watching these videos makes me hope that my diabetes has not caused too much damage on my kidneys since it went undetected for about 2 years.

I didn’t realize that eating too much meat would cause the formation of stones. I am willing to try taking Vitamin B6 and Magnesium to prevent kidney stones. They are the most painful thing I have ever experienced and I have had three children.

i think not all cases of diabetes ends up with kidney disease.as long as you manage your diabetes well, keep to your doctors advise, and above all maintain a healthy diet and life style, then there is hope.

I didn’t realize meat could cause stones either, looks like I’m fixing to cut back on my meats.

Sparks MR November 27, 2011 at 7:00 pm

So many reasons to move towards a plant based diet and so few to continue with a meat based one. Looks like fiber is the cure for most everything now.

dtoennis November 27, 2011 at 11:49 pm

I didn’t realize red meat could cause that either, I eat red meat all the time just about everyday on average and I have never had kidney stones.

Weatherford LM November 27, 2011 at 4:44 pm

I am right there with you, I have not had children yet, but I passed a couple stones recently in fact and thought I was about to die. Just laying in one position brought tears to my eyes, I couldn’t get comfortable or anything. I take magnesium every other day plus Niacin B6 and B12 daily along with my daily vitamin. Hope its not to much but they are both water soluble so I figure I am safe.

Hmm so I think that I must get my diabetes checked bc it runs in my family and i have had the symptoms.I am so afraid of changing my eating habits though :( I love my sweets :(

I got kidney stones from drinking too much wine. It was more painful than childbith.

I knew kidney problems and diabetes were related, but I didn’t know how. The second video was short and informative. I also didn’t know that dialysis was the process of filtering out blood (something I should of already known, I’m sure). People with kidney problems need to watch calcium and meat intake- another little fact I now know.

TMann November 19, 2011 at 9:34 pm

I knew somewhat the relation between diabetes and kidneys but wasn’t 100% sure. I found this very helpful in understanding.

Thank God for Dialysis.it has really saved lots of lives.

Yes, when the dialysis is performed properly, it can save lives. It can also take lives if it is administered improperly. Thank goodness for the professionals.

I didnt know kidney problems and diabetes were related. Dialysis is a life saving thing. Technology has advanced and become life saving. its scary to know eating alot of meat can form kidney stones.

I, also, did not know the direct link between Diabetes and kidney problems. There are so many links between so many numerous diseases though, at times, it seems like to much to remember. We just need to stick to the “No Junk In, No Junk Out, that way, hopefully, we can all live long, healthy lives.

wallaceba October 27, 2011 at 5:10 pm

Dialysis extended a friend of the families life by over 5 years. This may not seem like much but it meant a lot to her family and friends. She did have diabetes for a long time prior to dialysis but she seemed to eat a balanced diet.
The cranberry juice was a pleasant surprise and the sodas having a bad effect was something that I knew but have had a hard time breaking the habit. I do like my Cokes. But it is as much an addiction as smoking is to some people.

Koon KR November 7, 2011 at 10:32 am

I as well didn’t know kidney problems and diabetes were related. I also agree with you about the technology advancing and becoming life saving it is truely a blessing that many people can get saved by a machine. And I didn’t know that eating a lot of meat can form kidney stones I just knew you could get it if you drank a lot of cokes.

Reply

HillM November 22, 2011 at 11:34 am

I wasnt aware of the red meat issue either.

Reply

Kidney Disease is tough to think about because anyone can develop it. I try to watch my the sodas’ I drink but I know I drink a lot of tea. Although we hear about different diseases all the time, there are certain ones we tend not to think about. It is scary and these videos make me more aware of all diseases.

That’s me, I don’t drink sodas or alcohol. But i love my tea hot or cold.

It really is scary to really think about how we determine our lives by what we eat. We dont always think about whats best for us, just what taste the best.

Reply

Kidney disease is one you don’t here much people talk about even though everyone can get it.

daviste November 10, 2011 at 10:29 pm

I totally agree with you, we are what we eat…

Ashley M November 10, 2010 at 8:44 pm

I never knew that kidney disease affects everyone! Its really common in young African American males and hispanics. The kidney is very important to our bodies to maintain healthy. It secrutes waste and takes in nutrients. When the kidney takes in too much gulclose it leaks out into the system which makes us lose nutrients and etc. I leaned that kidney faliure is due to diabetes, high blood pressure, and hypertension.

Maintaining a normal weight, staying active, and eating healthy can help prevent kidney damage. But when its beyond repair thats when dialysis steps into play. It serves to clean the blood and toxins throughout your body. It’s amazing how much technology has saved ourselves. Kidney stones are one of the most painful thing but with simple steps such as watching calcium level, meat intake, sugar, and sodium it helps prevent them from happening. Im really going to start drinking more tea and taking cranberry juice and magnesuim to help prevent the stones. Watching what we eat and how much we exercise really does affect how long we live.

It is amazing the things that weigh heavily on certain races or gender. We take things for granted because we are not having any issues with our organs. Healthy lifestyles and working out is not always enough so we have to take better care of out bodies so that they will take care of us.

Reply

J-W April 4, 2011 at 7:52 pm

I agree. It absolutely blows my mind how many different diseases and illnesses are specific and majorly affect only certain races and/or genders.

Reply

Terrie H November 12, 2010 at 7:35 am

I had no idea that kidney disease is related to hypertension. I did know that diabetes caused all kinds of problems.
Now they are saying tea and 2 colored soft drinks a day can increase the risk of kidney disease. Take vitamin D. We have seen several of these videos where it says increased vitamin d is needed. So not here is another benefit of taking it.

Reply

M Gilbert November 12, 2010 at 9:39 am

Diabetes runs in my family my aunt passed away with diabetes and my father has is so i have to keep up the latest things on kidneys and anything to help keep my father healthy and these videos did this and many more. So if vitamin is helpful that is great.

Kidney disease knows no bounderies. I did not know that certain ethnic groups have a higher tendency to suffer from kidney disease.

Diabetes and kidney function seems to be closly related. It is amazing how just a yearly urine (simple) test can diagnose this silent attacker and killer.

Dialysis is a life saver for sure!. It is amazing how we posess the knoledge to filter the blood in order to maintain a normal lifestyle.

High calcium and meats are enimies for kidney problems. I have had kidnye problems and cranberry juice realy does work in an awesome way! I did not know that high blood pressure could give you kidney problems. Wow. this video was very informative.

Reply

Sparks MR November 27, 2011 at 7:01 pm

I second all your thoughts. Diabetes and kidney function are closely related. My sister-in-law has suffered through diabetes for her whole life, then a kidney/pancreas transplant has improved her life in so many ways.

These videos was very informative. The one about dialysis I kinda knew how it worked but now I know for sure. Also I didnt realize that tea and meat cause kidney stones but I did know that cranberry juice helps prevent them.

The first video really helped me to see how kidney disease can affect everyone. There is a clear connection between people with diabetes and kidney disease which I was aware of before seeing the video, but what I was unaware of is that high blood pressure is the second leading cause of kidney disease. This is a scary fact to learn for me because I know that hypertension runs in my boyfriend’s family and he has it already and doesn’t listen to me when I tell him he needs to eat healthier to manage his high blood pressure so at least now I have one more reason to give him for needing to eat healthy.

I honestly did not know that kidney disease could happen at any age but I guess it can. Knowing that everything we put into our body is filtered through our kidneys. This is why people do not need to drink so many cokes and junk because it is hard on our kidneys.

I didnt realize that the kidney and diabetes were related! I think it is cool that everything it filtered through our kidneys. It seems like they do alot of work. It is amazing that they can filter everything we eat for 50 years or more without ever having promblems but we have to change the oil filters in our cars every few months.

Really scary thing since I have has kidney stones 4 times in the past eight years!! I am here to tell you that this hurts as bad if not worse that giving birth. Each time I have had them I had to go to the emergency room and get flushed out and given a high dose of pain medication to knock me down. I have tried cutting all sorts of things that the internet has told me to cut out of my diet. They always seem to come back around from time to time. As quickly as they appear they then disappear. I have never gone to a specialist but probably should. I have actually caught only one of the stones. I assume I have passed many more but never caught them.

Diabetes, I even hate the way the word sounds, has so many complications. To think that something as good as sugar can be so bad for you. The end result of not taking care of your health after a diagnosis is of diabetes and high bloodpressure is dialysis. I would not ever want myself or a family member to be on dialysis.

Reply

SJ April 26, 2011 at 1:24 pm

I know, me too!! It’s also important to take care of yourself so you don’t develop diabetes. It’s awful!! I can not imagine.

Reply

R-E April 16, 2011 at 9:28 am

SheDM, I totally agree with you. there are so many complication associated with diabetes. I spoke with a diabetes doctor the other day and he told me that he doesnt lose patients to diabetes but most commonly to heart complications or kidney failure. He has only had one patient go into a diabetic coma and die. This is a serious illness and if we could just have a magic cure the world would be a better place

I understand this all only too well about the importance of blood sugar and renal failure…I ahve taken care of SO MANY patients that have gone into renal failure, and they had *NO IDEA* that their diabetes needed to be controlled…..this is one aspect of education I try and preach. Nobody needs to loose their kidneys because of high blood sugar!

Kidney disease is a very complicated illness. It has a affect on your body that is damaging. It can lead to edema and cause serious stress on your body. Your kidneys filter your blood and help keep your body healthy. Once your kidneys fail you have a certain amount of time on dialysis before your body can’t handle the stress of it all.

I was a dialysis patient for three months as an eighteen-year-old high school senior. It was incredible! I was a lot sicker than most people my age are on dialysis, but I am still thankful for it, because it bridged me to transplant. I would have died in March 2010 without it.

Reply

I did not realize that tea can increase your risk for kidney stones. I drink tea all the time. it is one of my favorite things to drink actually. what i see most working on a cardiac and renal floor is that people with kidney disease have dialysis and they are ok with that but they have trouble with their diets. There are a lot of restrictions for a renal diet that most of them do not always follow which leads to worsening of their condition.

Reply

daviste November 10, 2011 at 10:31 pm

I once knew an old lady that had kidney disease and her doctor told her to drink half a can of beer a day and her kidneys would improve, I wonder if that was true.

Reply

WhiteKD November 19, 2011 at 5:00 pm

I have heard something similar to that…..at the first signs of a kidney infection you should drink a beer and the first signs of a UTI drink the original Alka Seltzer. I know first hand the Alka Seltzer works…..sounds crazy, but it does!

When the first video asked, “Who gets kidney disease?” I was like “me!” I was 15… almost 16… when diagnosed September 2007. It was a completely random genetic disease, even though we had no clue it ran in my family. I was on dialysis from March-June 2010 before I got a kidney transplant June 22 2010. The anti-rejection medicines gave me temporary diabetes (that is just beginning to go away) even though I never had high blood sugar before. Diabetics should be very careful… managing diabetes is a lot easier than managing diabetes with kidney disease!

I knew that diabetes was associated with kidney disease but wasn’t sure exactly. Diabetes causes a lot of problems and I certainly hope that is one thing I don’t ever experience. Thank God for Dialysis, major life saver. I think it is very interesting how it works in replacing/cleaning the blood. I know not to drink lots of sodas and caffeine following calcium can cause kidney stone, however, I didn’t know meat could. Good thing I don’t eat a lot of it. I guess I will just have to deal with being anemic. Man our food choices are really narrowing down throughout all these videos.

I think I liked the 3rd video the most. It was simple, direct, and gave some good advice on diet changes that can effect kidney health. I have always heard that red meat wasn’t the best for you. I don’t eat a lot of red meat, and I know I don’t eat enough fish. I have heard the cranberry juice thing as well – I have had a few bladder infections and I do not like cranberry juice. I do, however, take a cranberry supplement daily for maintenance and prevention. It works well for me!
