Renal failure is no laughing matter. It is a very scary disease. Luckily, there have been many advancements in medical techology that are helping people fight this disease every day.

Kidney disease can be a very serious, life-threatening illness. It is very important to eat correctly and take precautions to protect your kidneys.

lmitchell April 6, 2016 at 6:10 pm

I concur, kidney disease is very serious. Until I started taking my A & P classes and now my nursing classes, I didn’t realize how much the kidneys regulated within our bodies. It is highly important that we take care of ourselves, listen to our bodies and watch our diet and get plenty of exercise to maintain healthy kidneys as well as healthy bodies.

mfranklin1` March 16, 2017 at 10:53 am

very important to take care of them. I have seen many patients on dialysis and it takes a huge toll on the whole body

Cwatkins7091 November 6, 2019 at 3:29 am

I agree completely.

I agree,we have to take care of our kidneys. This is not something to joke about Kidneys filter waste, without them we waste away. Taking care of your body by watching what we put into our body is key to health.

yes and it is very saddening to watch your loved ones go through rnal failure.

dhogan November 11, 2020 at 7:28 pm

I completely agree, kidney disease is very serious of the human body.

I agree, I am thankful for the every changing advancement for technology that helps aid in the cure for these diseases.

I’ve seen people suffer and it is nothing to laugh at, at all, hopeful this is something as a nation and world can get together and fix.

Plus people just think the kidneys just filters what you drink when in actuality, it filters blood and kills toxin in it. Pee is actually filtered blood and reduced down to urea and other particles.

Jodie Hammonds April 11, 2018 at 2:15 am

You have a unique, yet very informative point of view. I consider myself to have had a broad overview of the functions of my kidneys, and then you broke it down into the simplest of terms…great job!

KYoung April 10, 2018 at 4:35 pm

so true, it is very scary. The impact it would have on your daily life is huge. Just think it can be prevented by changing your diet to help with your type II and blood pressure. One thing seems to lead to another.

There have been advancements in the development of an artificial kidney by the University of San Francisco. From what I have read about it, it may be available to the public as early as 2020.

I agree, it’s not something to be taken lightly for sure. I am so glad that they can do what they do these days, because along time ago, there would be no way to live. And there’s always the choice to eat right. We do have that choice and it is the best preventative measure for prolonged health.

He never ate they way he should have and I felt he just was in denial of any way to help make things better. I was really happy to have watched these videos so have a better understanding.

I think I liked the 3rd video the most. It was simple, direct, and gave some good advice on diet changes that can effect kidney health. I have always heard that red meat wasn’t the best for you. I don’t eat a lot of red meat, and I know I don’t eat enough fish. I have heard the cranberry juice thing as well – I have had a few bladder infections and I do not like cranberry juice. I do, however, take a cranberry supplement daily for maintenance and prevention. It works well for me!

I knew that diabetes was associated with kidney disease but wasn’t sure exactly. Diabetes causes a lot of problems and I certainly hope that is one thing I don’t ever experience. Thank God for Dialysis, major life saver. I think it is very interesting how it works in replacing/cleaning the blood. I know not to drink lots of sodas and caffeine following calcium can cause kidney stone, however, I didn’t know meat could. Good thing I don’t eat a lot of it. I guess I will just have to deal with being anemic. Man our food choices are really narrowing down throughout all these videos.

aperet1 April 10, 2018 at 12:12 am

Yes, I agree! Dialysis is a great intervention. It tends to be very tiring for the patient though because they are there sometimes for up to four hours having dialysis be done to them.

ycanasramos March 26, 2018 at 7:39 pm

Diabetes, high blood pressure and some drugs can lead to a renal failure. We have to be aware of everything, the best thing to control diabetes is by eating healthily, maintaining an ideal body weight, and avoid all of the things that can get the person worse. Dialysis certain can help at some point, but sometimes the best thing is to get a kidney transplant.

When the first video asked, “Who gets kidney disease?” I was like “me!” I was 15… almost 16… when diagnosed September 2007. It was a completely random genetic disease, even though we had no clue it ran in my family. I was on dialysis from March-June 2010 before I got a kidney transplant June 22 2010. The anti-rejection medicines gave me temporary diabetes (that is just beginning to go away) even though I never had high blood sugar before. Diabetics should be very careful… managing diabetes is a lot easier than managing diabetes with kidney disease!

I did not realize that tea can increase your risk for kidney stones. I drink tea all the time. it is one of my favorite things to drink actually. what i see most working on a cardiac and renal floor is that people with kidney disease have dialysis and they are ok with that but they have trouble with their diets. There are a lot of restrictions for a renal diet that most of them do not always follow which leads to worsening of their condition.

Reply

Kidney disease is a very complicated illness. It has a affect on your body that is damaging. It can lead to edema and cause serious stress on your body. Your kidneys filter your blood and help keep your body healthy. Once your kidneys fail you have a certain amount of time on dialysis before your body can’t handle the stress of it all.

SheDM, I totally agree with you. there are so many complication associated with diabetes. I spoke with a diabetes doctor the other day and he told me that he doesnt lose patients to diabetes but most commonly to heart complications or kidney failure. Diabetes, I even hate the way the word sounds, has so many complications. To think that something as good as sugar can be so bad for you. Each time I have had them I had to go to the emergency room and get flushed out and given a high dose of pain medication to knock me down. I have tried cutting all sorts of things that the internet has told me to cut out of my diet. They always seem to come back around from time to time. As quickly as they appear they then disappear. I have never gone to a specialist but probably should. I have actually caught only one of the stones. I assume I have passed many more but never caught them.

I’ve also seen their ports bleed a lot after and had to send them to the ER for care of this. There is a lot of issues associated with dialysis, but it does save lives.

This is a scary fact to learn for me because I know that hypertension runs in my boyfriend’s family and he has it already and doesn’t listen to me when I tell him he needs to eat healthier to manage his high blood pressure so at least now I have one more reason to give him for needing to eat healthy.

Kidney disease knows no bounderies. I did not know that certain ethnic groups have a higher tendency to suffer from kidney disease.

Diabetes and kidney function seems to be closly related. It is amazing how just a yearly urine (simple) test can diagnose this silent attacker and killer.

Dialysis is a life saver for sure!. It is amazing how we posess the knoledge to filter the blood in order to maintain a normal lifestyle.

High calcium and meats are enimies for kidney problems. I have had kidnye problems and cranberry juice realy does work in an awesome way! I did not know that high blood pressure could give you kidney problems. Wow. this video was very informative.

I second all your thoughts. Diabetes and kidney function are closely related. My sister-in-law has suffered through diabetes for her whole life, then a kidney/pancreas transplant has improved her life in so many ways.

I had no idea that kidney disease is related to hypertension. I did know that diabetes caused all kinds of problems.
Now they are saying tea and 2 colored soft drinks a day can increase the risk of kidney disease. Take vitamin D. We have seen several of these videos where it says increased vitamin d is needed. So not here is another benefit of taking it.

It is amazing the things that weigh heavily on certain races or gender. We take things for granted because we are not having any issues with our organs. Healthy lifestyles and working out is not always enough so we have to take better care of out bodies so that they will take care of us.

I agree. It absolutely blows my mind how many different diseases and illnesses are specific and majorly affect only certain races and/or genders.

I never knew that kidney disease affects everyone! Its really common in young African American males and hispanics. The kidney is very important to our bodies to maintain healthy. It secrutes waste and takes in nutrients. When the kidney takes in too much gulclose it leaks out into the system which makes us lose nutrients and etc. I leaned that kidney faliure is due to diabetes, high blood pressure, and hypertension.

Maintaining a normal weight, staying active, and eating healthy can help prevent kidney damage. But when its beyond repair thats when dialysis steps into play. It serves to clean the blood and toxins throughout your body. It’s amazing how much technology has saved ourselves. Kidney stones are one of the most painful thing but with simple steps such as watching calcium level, meat intake, sugar, and sodium it helps prevent them from happening. Im really going to start drinking more tea and taking cranberry juice and magnesuim to help prevent the stones. Watching what we eat and how much we exercise really does affect how long we live.

Kidney Disease is tough to think about because anyone can develop it. I try to watch my the sodas’ I drink but I know I drink a lot of tea. Although we hear about different diseases all the time, there are certain ones we tend not to think about. It is scary and these videos make me more aware of all diseases.

That’s me, I don’t drink sodas or alcohol. But i love my tea hot or cold.

It really is scary to really think about how we determine our lives by what we eat. We dont always think about whats best for us, just what taste the best.

Kidney disease is one you don’t here much people talk about even though everyone can get it.

daviste November 10, 2011 at 10:29 pm

I totally agree with you, we are what we eat…

Dbeard November 9, 2010 at 4:35 pm

I didnt know kidney problems and diabetes were related. Dialysis is a life saving thing. Technology has advanced and become life saving. its scary to know eating alot of meat can form kidney stones.

I, also, did not know the direct link between Diabetes and kidney problems. There are so many links between so many numerous diseases though, at times, it seems like to much to remember. We just need to stick to the “No Junk In, No Junk Out, that way, hopefully, we can all live long, healthy lives.

Dialysis extended a friend of the families life by over 5 years. This may not seem like much but it meant a lot to her family and friends. She did have diabetes for a long time prior to dialysis but she seemed to eat a balanced diet.
The cranberry juice was a pleasant surprise and the sodas having a bad effect was something that I knew but have had a hard time breaking the habit. I do like my Cokes. But it is as much an addiction as smoking is to some people.

I as well didn’t know kidney problems and diabetes were related. I also agree with you about the technology advancing and becoming life saving it is truely a blessing that many people can get saved by a machine. And I didn’t know that eating a lot of meat can form kidney stones I just knew you could get it if you drank a lot of cokes.

Yes, when the dialysis is performed properly, it can save lives. It can also take lives if it is administered improperly. Thank goodness for the professionals.

I knew kidney problems and diabetes were related, but I didn’t know how. The second video was short and informative. I also didn’t know that dialysis was the process of filtering out blood (something I should of already known, I’m sure). People with kidney problems need to watch calcium and meat intake- another little fact I now know.

I knew somewhat the relation between diabetes and kidneys but wasn’t 100% sure. I found this very helpful in understanding.

Watching these videos makes me hope that my diabetes has not caused too much damage on my kidneys since it went undetected for about 2 years.

I didn’t realize that eating too much meat would cause the formation of stones. I am willing to try taking Vitamin B6 and Magnesium to prevent kidney stones. They are the most painful thing I have ever experienced and I have had three children.

i think not all cases of diabetes ends up with kidney disease.as long as you manage your diabetes well, keep to your doctors advise, and above all maintain a healthy diet and life style, then there is hope.

I didn’t realize meat could cause stones either, looks like I’m fixing to cut back on my meats.

So many reasons to move towards a plant based diet and so few to continue with a meat based one. Looks like fiber is the cure for most everything now.

dtoennis November 27, 2011 at 11:49 pm

I didn’t realize red meat could cause that either, I eat red meat all the time just about everyday on average and I have never had kidney stones.

Micah Thomas November 6, 2016 at 10:08 pm

That’s what i’m thinking, but that’s really tough to do. She didn’t really say how much is too much.

Weatherford LM November 27, 2011 at 4:44 pm

I am right there with you, I have not had children yet, but I passed a couple stones recently in fact and thought I was about to die. Just laying in one position brought tears to my eyes, I couldn’t get comfortable or anything. I take magnesium every other day plus Niacin B6 and B12 daily along with my daily vitamin. Hope its not to much but they are both water soluble so I figure I am safe.

My mom suffers with kidney stones. She never gets it checked out, or to see why she gets so many.

tscales October 2, 2018 at 6:02 pm

Never had stones, but I have had polynephritis. They say stones are worse than child birth. I’ll take their word for it.

ransoml November 8, 2023 at 8:22 pm

They say kidney stones aren’t a joke. They are calcium deposits and sometimes the doctor can help break them up with some treatments. Sometimes they send you home to pass them. They are hard and jagged causing the pain. If they are continuous and too large, you have to have them surgically removed.

Holly Marie November 28, 2011 at 2:57 am

Hmm so I think that I must get my diabetes checked bc it runs in my family and i have had the symptoms.I am so afraid of changing my eating habits though 🙁 I love my sweets 🙁
