I didnt know that iron deficiency was a cause of fatigueness. It explains alot why my wife was so tired in her pregnancies with our three boys.

I do not like anything she listed to eat to help with anemia. I would just rather take the supplements. I have gone to donate blood before and told that my iron was too low and that I couldn’t. That was a few months and I haven’t been back to try to donate again. I usually try to do it every 8 weeks. I need to go back soon. Do you have to eat those foods and take the supplements? Or can you just take the supplements? I didn’t know anemia could be as serious as someone thinking they were having a heart attack.

I have never had any problems with anemia, even when I was pregnant. I know what to look for if I ever do start to feel tired and run down. I usually have my iron checked every 6 months at the doctors office. I never knew that one of the symptoms was the urge to chew on something.

iron skillet…that is all my grand mother uses. i was told that to much iron can make you constipated, is this true? i know many people that are anemic and have to be super careful. i thought it was very informative especially the energy drinks, algae based drinks it doesn’t sound good but i guess if it does the trick then i guess it’s worth it.

These videos were very informative to me. I had been diagnosed with this around a year ago. I was not very educated on the matter though. I was not sure what caused it or how I could fix it. The second video hit home! I had all of these symptoms and they are just awful! All I ever wanted to do was chew on my mouth but after I took iron supplements for a while and regulated my RBC’s I started feeling a million times better!

I constantly feel fatigued during the day, even after I have gotten a good 8 hours of sleep. Now, I’m wondering if I should try to increase my intake of iron. I wonder how many women suffer from these same symptoms – fatigue, stress, pail, unfocused, craving to chew, weak and faint. I was glad to watch these videos and learn more about iron deficiency and anemia.

you should get checked for sure. it is very scary to think that you might have something wrong with you. i have learned in the past month or so how important it is to eat healthy and take care of your body. try eating some of the foods stated above and take supplements.

Interesting that iron deficienty can cause fatigue, stress, weak, and even craving to chew.

Before I started this summer semester I was suffering from fatigue. I would practically fall asleep in middle of class. I would day dream about my bed and when I got home I would take a nap or go to bed around 6:30-7:00 p.m. I was completely worn out. I did not know what the problem was so I started talking to friends at church and one woman suggested I take an iron supplement. She said she had the same symptoms and started taking iron pills and it really boosted her energy levels. I went to the store and bought a bottle of iron and started taking it. It worked! I have more energy now and can stay awake during the day.

I’m glad to hear that the iron supplements worked for you. I think I’m going to try these out and see if they have the same effect on me. I’m constantly tired, even after I’ve gotten plenty of sleep.

Reply

TNS-2 June 23, 2011 at 9:26 am

That is exactly what I was going through and the iron supplements helped me as well. Are you continuing to take them?

Reply

aak2 June 28, 2011 at 1:17 pm

I want to try them! I am constantly chewing on stuff and always feel tired. I just figured that it was from working and school. But a lot of other people do the same things I do and have energy to go and do stuff after work. I dont. I just wanna go crawl in bed. My pencils all have chew marks on them and the lids to my pens are completely torn apart from me chewing. I’ll chew on straws, my phone cover, and chew on nails. I try to chew on jelly beans, mike and ikes and edible things.

My husband stays fatique all the time so he may be anemic. I find these videos very informative. He likes chicken liver so he may need to eat more. I also have an iron skillet guess I need to use it more.

I did know that cooking in an iron skillet that you could get iron. That also explains why our elders lived longer and had more enegy than us younger folks have because they used to cook in iron skillets all the time.

i stay anemic most of the time as i have become aware of by many doctor visits. I look ghostly alot and stay tired so those signs i have tried adjusting to. i am very familiar with iron supplements, but didnt know there were other ways to aid.

Now that i have been watching these videos they have really helped me to understand why the doctor has recommended to me about certain supplements and why i needed to take them. They really don’t explain and go into detail like these videos do on why. But now that i know i will start taking them like i need to maybe i won’t be so tired all the time anymore if i stay on the vitamin D.

It seems very common to be fatigued and idk how people know for sure if they are just tierd? If they should see dr? Iron has many ways to get into the blood stream. It seems odd for using a iron skillet to get minerials??? M-S

The second video said try again later, the first video was good, quick but interesting. What I do know about anemia I learned being pregnant with twins. I was anemic the whole pregnancy. WHen I went in for my C section they had blood on standby because my H*H was like 8.5 and 21…..very low!!!

Good video on anemia, I knew a lot about this topic because I was anemia most of my life. It is really hard to tell if you are anemic if you are tired from work or being a parent. I did not realize that I had it until I went to the doctor for an anual check up. Great information.

You must have a great doctor. For some reason I cannot seem to find a descent doctor here in Arkansas. They don’t want to find the problem but only medicate the symptoms. I have been to the doctor and they did blood work a few months ago when I was having my issues with severe fatigue. They drew blood work and said they were going to check me for diabetes. The great thing is I am not diabetic but they never found out what the problem was. I might as well be my own doctor because I started using iron supplements and fixed the problem.

I tried to watch the anemia video, but it is stating that it has been blocked in the U.S. due to copyright violations. I have had anemia before when I was pregnant. It is no fun. I felt like I had been run over by a truck and had absolutely NO energy. It is due to a lack of iron. Iron uptake can be in the form of the foods we eat, supplements and intravenous drips. s-g

This video has me thinking that I might very well be anemic. I seem to always be lethargic at work. If not, it’s still a good excuse. Thats crazy how much more iron can be absorbed from breast milk compared to cow’s milk.

I have always said that I would not breast feed not that there is anything wrong with it; it just always kinda weirded me out a little. After watching this video I started to realize how important it really is for the child. I did not know that it had so many benifits. I did not know all the benifits of iron, but I found it very interesting in this video.

I felt that way when I got pregnant with my first child, I was only 19; once I learned how important it was and how much better it was for her than formula I changed my mind. I breastfed all three of my children and I feel like I developed a closer bond with them than if I chose to bottle fed.Don’t get me wrong, I support anyone’s decision not to and I know some people can’t do it, but for me it just seemed like the best thing to do.

I sometimes feel tired and weak but every year I have my iron checked and it always turns out to be normal. So sometimes you just maybe tired and there maybe nothing wrong with your iron. Which I am glad that I am not anemic because that means that my child isn’t going to be anemic. One thing is for sure is that I need to take in more iron just so that I don’t have anything to worry about.

Iron is very important. My mom is anemic and she has to get b12 shots. Plus she has to eat alot of red meat. I know pregnant women need alot of iron and so do babies. That way most formulas have added iron. To have sure babies get the amounts they need

Our bodies need iron to make hemoglobin which moves oxygen through our circulatory system. I am not iron deficient nor is anyone in my family–we like our red meat! I know that iron supplements are important to pregnant women and to women who are breastfeeding.

I didn’t know until watching this video that anemia or iron deficiency can affect our sleeping, eating, attention span, cognitive skills, and fine motor skills. A diet that has sufficient iron is important for men and women at any stage of life from newborns through senior adulthood.

I didn’t realize the role played iron played in the body. I need to start finding ways to increase the levels. I also didn’t realize the difference in regular milk and breast milk this video would be very helpful to women.

Iron is awesome…I just did nor realize how critical it is especially to infants and children. I also learned that most people require suppliments in addition to their diets so that they can maintail a healthy level of Iron in their systems.

Another reason to breastfeed: so the poor little babies will get enough Iron! The mother of the family in Arkansas with the 18 or 19 kids probably has no iron what-so-ever. I can’t even imagine!

I never realized just how important iron is to the functioning of the body until I watched this video. I learned that iron deficiency is associated with poor attention span, inadequate motor skills, and reduced memory retention. Children going through preschool or regular schooling where certain skills are being taught who have iron deficiency may never be able to catch up. This illustrates just how critical iron is.

I never knew how much iron affects our everyday life. When you cannot make enough hemoglobin and healthy red blood cells that is where iron deficiency or “weak blood” comes into play. It affects everyone, more women than men, but preventable. The deficiency affects our body’s emotional and physically. Loss of concentration, apetite, weakness, in somina are all symptoms.
The causes are low iron absorbtion and intake from foods. The flaws that come with low iron are people’s function, low achievement level, no concentration, no energy, how they feel, and etc. Solutions are eating more iron intake type of foods such as red meat and animal blood. Taking iron tablets and more Vitiamn C. Iron Deficiency can affect everyone, emotionaly and physically. So you make the choice.

I like how this video took a different approach by specifying who and how much iron is needed instead of saying that we all must take iron everyday in order to keep breathing. I’m just confused by all the different opinions. I’m actually pretty healthy and have not been to the doctor in awhile so I wouldn’t know if someone was giving me potentially harmful information or not. By no means am I saying that we shouldn’t care about our health but spending all the time worrying about if I had the correct intake that day would just stress me out more. I pay attention, I just don’t over do it. Everything happens for a reason and some things just can’t be prevented know matter what.

I never understood why my doctor made such a fuss over me being anemic until now. When I had my last child, my hemoglobin was 3 and from the video it is supposed to be 7 to 10. I guess that is why they kept trying to get me to eat raisins which I don’t like.

I really didn’t know how anemia really affected a child and adult mentally and physically.

Taylor B September 28, 2010 at 10:52 pm

I didn’t know how iron affected people’s cognitive and social skills either. I never associated iron intake with a person’s ability to do well or not do well in school or have the ability to concentrate, sleep, pay attention, etc. Learned something new!

I didn’t know iron was so important iron is needed to make hemoglobin. I am considered anemic I have had low iron during and since my pregnancy. I am also always tired while, I was pregnant I was prescribed ferrous sulfate to make up for the iron I was lacking. I didn’t that the deficiency meant my red blood count was low, now it all make since, I am apart of the W.I.C. program since I found out I pregnant and in the W.I.C. program a pregnant woman is given vouchers to purchase milk, eggs, cheese, beans, certain cereals that consists of grains, and vegetables and this are all the things that are essential to building iron in a pregnant woman and the infant. Even though, I was anemic during pregnancy my son was a rather large baby. He weighed 8lbs 10oz. I love this video, I especially like the animation and the information included in video.

I am really up for making sure that I have enough iron in my body.
I weigh 95 lbs and so I am afraid that I will not have enough nutrition when I get prego to take care of my needs as well as the baby.
this really helped finding out that iron is a big deal in women and children both I want a healthy baby and would not want them to be a slower learner or to be a pre mature baby because I lacked in an area of my vitamins so I guess I really need to do it for them as well as myself.

This video was very interesting. I didn’t know very much about iron defiency at all. I had no clue that females were at a higher risk than males to develop this. I had no clue that women should wait two years between pregnancies to let their iron buil back up. My parents had me and my two sisters all 3 years apart…so i guess they knew a little about this!

I have recently gone through a medical situation that has caused me to be anemic. I was just told to begin taking iron pills and I have started. It is so funny because I have been just exhausted! I kept thinking something has got to be wrong with me because it wasn’t like “Oh, I would love a nap”, it was more like if I sat down on the couch I could not keep my eyes open. So I am so glad that I got tested and found out that it was my iron level. They explained to me that it was causing me to be tierd but the apathy aspect I just learned about. I knew I wasn’t feeling up to par but I didn’t even care to do anything about it for the longest time. Well, there you go…apathetic about the thing that was causing me to be apathetic!!! I am again reminded of how I need o give my son a multi-vitamin, just in case. I can’t believe the repercussions of low iron…scary.

LMM June 22, 2010 at 10:53 pm

It seemed like everyone at every stage of life needs iron. I didn’t know that two pregnancys back to back could be harmful because of the lack of iron stored. I didn’t realize how much iron played a role in other body systems other than just blood. I was surprised by all the symptoms that can be caused by anemia.

Reply

QAL June 23, 2010 at 9:26 am

I would have assumed that if the body supported another pregnancy so soon that the levels of iron and other necessary vitamins would be at a high enough level to be sufficient for the next child.

Reply

RTP July 11, 2010 at 1:31 pm

I think it said something in the text about pregnancy requiring additional iron so if you think about it, two pregnancies back to back would be twice as detrimental to iron stores in the mother’s body.

SAF June 22, 2010 at 7:04 pm

I was severly anemic one time although I don’t know if it was the same as the one here. It was due to chemo therapy and I received a blood transfusion. I know the docter told me I was so severe that if I hadn’t of come to children’s I would prolly not have made it.

Reply

Beth McRaven June 23, 2010 at 1:47 pm

It is interesting isn’t it that something we don’t pay much attention to can be so important. I tend to be someone who will not go to the doctor unless there is a wound of some sort, so I would never have found out that I was anemic if I hadn’t gone in for something major. I also feel a little guilty or irresponsible because it says that coffee and tea also inhibit absorption of iron but I drink them both on a daily basis and do not want to give them up. I will keep trying the supplements and leafy greens and hope that this is sufficiant.

QAL June 21, 2010 at 1:00 pm

I did not know that in some cases of iron deficiency in children and infants it could affect learning ability, motor functions, and physical growth. I now know why it is highly recommended that women breastfeed. It was stated in the video that 50% of iron in breast milk is absorbed by infants, but only 10%of iron is absorbed by infants in cow’s milk.
