How Dietary Supplements Can Save You Thousands

July 23, 2010

Selecting supplements to take is always confusing. Doing the research on what type, form, and price comparison is important but most of us just pick up a bottle that looks good and hope for the best. We assume subconsciously that someone has done this leg work for us. That’s why they are on the shelf at our favorite drug store for sale right?
What do you think?

What valuable information! Those numbers are amazing! These videos have taught me so much about the right foods to eat & the right supplements to start taking. I think & hope I will continue to use this information for my own benefit & to also help educate others. Everyone should see this video! I like that he gave recomendations at the end on what we should be taking.

I agree! I take supplements daily but I am going to look at what the quality of my supplements are and make changes if necessary. I will also be looking into adding a couple of supplements as well. I do not want to get osteoporosis when I’m older. That is such a scary thought!

It is scary to think as a women I could end up with osteroporosis as well. I don’t want that at all. I try to get enough calcium by eating enough ice cream 🙂

vcanea October 2, 2011 at 1:07 am

I guess if you don’t have your own garden to get fresh fruits and vegetables from, you need to get nutritional supplements. I think in the long run saves you money, not to mention the pain from getting sick easy because you don’t get all the vitamins and minerals you need from your regular diet.

Wow. Taking supplements can not only save you money by giving you the nutrients you need without spending a bunch of money on extra food, it can save the economy billions by reducing medical issues. Thats awesome.

It makes sense to me. If you think about it. Taking a few supplements for prevention saves money on using the doctor and hospitalizations from complications. Ca and Vit D keep your bones strong so you dont break a hip and need surgery, etc. I think its genius. Just do research and really understand what your taking before you do.

I totally agree. I am going to continue to research & learn what supplements are the best for me in the right amounts for my age, etc.

I can not believe that just drinking milk alone could save millions of hip fractures in the U.S. and also saves 17 million dollars. Everyone should drink plenty of milk and save some much needed money.

Reply

vcanea October 2, 2011 at 1:10 am

Good thing that I love milk and that I drink about a gallon a week. I wonder if that’s enough??:)

Reply

West MS September 19, 2011 at 9:40 pm

That is interesting, so we should eat and spend a little extra on healthy foods than on bad foods because we actually don’t save money because we have to go to the doctor more for health problems.

There are so many researches done all the time! No offense its hard to pick what is accurate and what is not. So, nutritional supplements according to this video are good for you if you are old or pregnant. The calcium and vitamin D (helps prevent osteoporosis), Folic Acid (helps with birth defects), Omega-3 Fats (helps the heart), and Lutien (helps prevent blindness). Same information but according to this video; it has now been proven with out a doubt! Guess we can see what someone else has to say a week or two from now on each of these nutritional supplements.

I don’t necessarily believe we need to take a lot of supplements. I think a multivitamin is enough. Our bodies weren’t designed for man-made supplements. They were designed to eat whole foods. Calcium-drink milk. Vitamin D- soak up the sun. Spend atleast an hour or two everyday outside. Make time.

Prescription Medicines can be thrown in the trash and replaced with Dietary Supplements…. OMG I was blown away. I been able to lower blood pressure , cholestorol and many other things in my own health with the healthy eatting habits. It is saving me bundles of money. I make sure that my husband and son also take a good supplement. It has been exciting to know that alot of the things that my grandparents and parents suffered with I am controlling with my diet and supplements and saving money in the process.

I know so many physicians who would never recommend a nutritional supplement. I’ve always believed they were beneficial, simply because most people’s diets don’t include all the things that we need to be healthy. It’s always great to hear simple information that can benefit so many people!

This video was packed full of information and I loved it. Me and my younger son have never taken the flu shot but we do take vitamins every day. Since I have been on my diet with the personal trainer she has had us taking Vitamin C in addition to our multivitamin every day. My mom has always told me about Zinc and other vitamins but I never listened. My son has the flu right now and I wish we had got the flu shop because he is terribly sick. I think it is smart to take vitamins to help prevent future problems. It’s a lot better than taking a lot of medications that will deplete the nutrients in our body as we age.

I have recently started taking a multivitamin, magnesium, and vitamin C everyday. This is something I haven’t done since I was pregnant with my last child 5 years ago. Why I stopped, I don’t know because I remember feeling better when I was taking them. I’ve also started giving my kids a multivitamin because I know they don’t get all they need from their daily diets. If spending a little each day can prevent major problems down the road, then it’s definitely worth the expense.

I’ve had both my kids on vitamons since they were born, physicians in other states stress the importance of them, but not so much in Arkansas. My oldest son, born in VA, was sent home from the hospital with vitamons!!

The benfits from the supplements were informative. Alot of people don’t know the lack of nutrients in their diet. The food, even fresh fruits and vegetables, are not grown as nutrient sound as when a person grew it for themselves. The amount of money he mentioned in the video could be why doctors don’t suggest the vitamin supplements to their patients.

Well, the video was convincing. I do believe that taking these 4 supplements will help improve my health and help me to possibly avoid cancers, heart problems, bone loss, dementia, and macular degeneration in my senior years. But, I’m like many of you…it’s hard to shop for the correct supplements and the correct dosages needed of each supplement. I plan to ask my doctor for his recommendation the next time I see his for a visit.

I plan to eat more yellow and orange vegetables to improve my eye sight…my grandmother, who is 78, has been diagnosed with macular degeneration and I know that the disease is hereditary…so I’m going to do all I can to prevent that from happening to me.

That is an unaceptably high number. You need to do research on everything you put in or on your body.
I was surprised to hear the other day that 60% of substances you put on your skin is absorbed.
Not all vitamins are created equal and the most expensive is not always the best. Consumer Report type of articles are good reads on such subjects.
Many poor quality vitamin/Mineral supplements have fillers, additives that can cause unpleasant reactions. I always buy all natural ingredients, no fillers, dyes or preservatives. They do not always smell or taste so good but I know they are better for me.
Always buy the smallest bottle you can find. Sample packs are good until you are sure you can tolerate it. Also, add only one vitamin/mineral supplement at a time and be sure to check with your pharmacist if you are on medications for contraindications.

I think that is the exact reason we need to be more interested in what we are putting into our bodies. I was afraid of supplements, vitamins and minerals and then I started looking at what all was in the food I was putting into my body too. The odds were stacked highly against the food and not the supplements.

I am glad to hear someone put this on the record. It is so common for the health care profession to push drugs that maintain health rather than vitamins that will prevent problems on down the road. And ounce of prevention comes to mind.
I take zinc and c most all year long. I never get the flu or colds. My husband will not take them and has the flu twice a year and colds all the time. Time off work alone is a major issue, it hurts production and not to mention it is not a vacation when you are in bed sick. I read and do research on my own. I do not listen to most people or studies as they will change their way of thinking next year. I look at time tested results.
Now to find a supplement to get rid of allergies to burning wood.
I did hear him mention dementia, But did not hear the supplement associated with prevention.
I will be looking into adding some other supplements to our diet. I have never considered that our fruits and veggies are shipped long distances or grown in poor soil. This really makes me realize that a small patio garden or small patch of land could be very good for controlling what is in your food and having it available fresh from the plant.

Reply

Lacey H. October 8, 2010 at 6:16 pm

yes our fruit and vegetables are shipped long distances. When you go to the grocery store such as Wal-Mart if you look at the fruit or vegetable sign most of them will have a label that lets you know where they came from.

“Pennies a day can save 24 billion dollars over five years,” by taking dietary supplements daily. I never knew how important them were to our health and our pocket book. Some call them “expensive urine,” but they really make a difference in our lives. By taking Omega3 fats supplement reduce heart diease and saves 3.2 billion dollars medical expensives. Lutein supplement prevents eye loss and etc. which saves 3.6 billion dollars in medical expensives.Calicum and Vitiamn D reduce bone breaks and fractures which saves 16 billion dollars and folic acid saves 600 babies be born with no birth defects which saves 344 billion in medical expensives. 92% of us are deficent in some type of nutrients. So why dont we save ourselves from cancer, heart diease, osteoporosis, blindness, bone loss and just take daily dietary supplements? From now on these tips are going to fall into my everyday life.

“Quick Facts…
• A lack of iron in the diet may result in the development of iron deficiency anemia.
• The greatest need for iron is during growth or periods of blood loss.
• To ensure a diet adequate in iron: Eat a variety of iron-rich foods, eat foods high in vitamin C, and combine plant sources of iron with meat, fish and poultry.
• Iron absorption is affected by the iron status of the individual, the type of food eaten and vitamin C intake.”

RTP July 24, 2010 at 1:08 pm

1. The best foods for obtaining iron naturally are foods that originally contained hemoglobin, such as red meats, fish, and poultry. Some plants also contain varying amounts of iron.

2. The best form of this supplement would probably be capsule form, but others including chewable tablet and liquid forms are also available.

3. The best places to buy iron supplements are Wal-Mart, Walgreens, USA Drug and other drug retailers.

4. Don’t take iron supplements if you are currently taking cholestyramine, medications used to treat stomach ulcers, tetracyclines, quinolones, ACE inhibitors, carbidopa, levothyroxine and birth control medications as these medications may interfere with iron absorption.
