How Aware Are You of World Hunger?

September 26, 2010

If America is the land of plenty, why are so many going hungry?

  • 15 million children die of hunger every year.
  • 160 million children under the age of 5 are malnourished.
  • Every 3.6 seconds someone dies from hunger.
  • We don’t have to accept these stats. We can make a difference.

THEIR IS ALOT OF PEOPLE THAT STRUGGLE AND CAN`T AFFORD FOOD LIKE THEY SHOULD BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO MANY BILLS. YOU MIGHT CAN GET FOODSTAMPS BUT THEY TAKE THE GROSS INCOME NOT WHAT YOU ACTUALLY BRING HOME , I THINK THAT STUIP BECAUSE IT HURT YOU IN THE LONG RUN ON HOW MANY YOU CAN RECIEVE. WE GOT A FEW FOOD PANTRY THAT HELPS PEOPLE I THINK THAT GOOD.

I agree that they should account for what you actually bring home I’ve never completely understood why they take the gross income. But that’s how the government works.

I agree. DHS should look at net pay, not gross. Because they tax the CRAP out of you.

Bsossamon July 20, 2016 at 11:41 am

I agree I think they should look at what you actually bring home and not the gross income

JessyM July 25, 2016 at 11:33 am

I think the requirements for assistance should be individually based on circumstances for each family. If someone is working to better their situation, they might qualify for more assistance than a person that is unemployed while needing financial help. However, it is the children in these homes that suffer because of the restrictions places. A house with food is a luxury to many working families today, it is sad.

bbyers6771 February 4, 2017 at 4:45 am

I agree because you can not spend what the government takes out of your check

mfranklin1` March 16, 2017 at 10:32 am

The system will never be perfect unfortunately.

mhardage3 April 10, 2017 at 5:34 pm

I agree with you. Some families need food stamps but do not qualify when they have 4 kids and they’re bringing home only 30,000 a year combined. Most of that goes to bills and schooling for the kids.

ANewman April 12, 2017 at 2:25 pm

I totally agree that they should account for the total brought home not gross income.

A.Wood July 13, 2017 at 1:13 pm

We had food stamps for awhile until my mother got a little raise and even though it still isn’t enough to get groceries they took us off because she “makes too much”.

Kyle Cash July 18, 2017 at 1:38 pm

It definitely sucks for people that are working and trying hard to support their families and therefore make just enough not to qualify for assistance but not enough to buy the groceries their children need.

khoward November 6, 2017 at 7:04 pm

I agree. It seems like they reward the people that do not attempt to work and penalize the ones that do. Looking at the gross income would help more people to qualify.

smcneely24 April 11, 2018 at 4:22 pm

I agree, food is necessary for survival it’s not a privilege therefore it should be treated that way.

Stephanie Rogers April 11, 2018 at 5:03 pm

I completely agree! I don’t think that it is fair either that they take the gross pay instead of what you actually bring home.

caty marsischky July 18, 2018 at 1:05 am

I agree because I only work 20-30 hours a week during school and I also have many bills. I barely have food to get any money because I make too much.

jicaldw October 11, 2019 at 11:01 pm

I totally agree. I remember once when after my rent and other bills i had twenty dollars to my name and couldn’t get any government assistance because Im single and without child.

ameiklejohn November 5, 2019 at 3:22 pm

I feel as if the government tries to find loopholes to keep from losing money.
For example, the gentleman mentions that he is broke and struggling even with two jobs but they seem to make “enough” money to be ineligible for food stamps. Just seems like somethings do not tie upright.

havenhughes14 December 1, 2019 at 2:16 pm

I really agree with this. I think that the government does whatever they can to make the most money out of you, which is how DHS does when looking at gross pay – so they can tax you as much as possible.

laureneleslie April 6, 2022 at 4:41 pm

I completely agree, as someone seeing things roughly first handed I don’t agree with the way the system works, and it only makes it that much harder on those who are struggling.

bblair5154 November 5, 2023 at 9:19 pm

I totally agree. Having 4 kids at home makes it hard when they take out hundreds of dollars every year.

Shannon Williams September 9, 2015 at 3:40 pm

There are so many families that cannot afford a simple gallon of milk, but yet the government tells them that they can with the wages they had received in the past. I have gone through this myself. I was recently divorced, single parent, trying to pay rent, utilities, and a car payment (junker car). I went to try to get help and the case worker said I should stop working all together or go to work part time earning 24 hours a week instead of 40. I tried to raise my daughter not to be dependent on anyone and if I reduced my hours to meet the standards of the government. I would have lost my home, my car and my utilities would have been shut off, then I would have lost my daughter for neglect. Its crazy how much our government really cares about it’s people. Not to mention trying to feed her!

kbrodin November 3, 2015 at 1:20 pm

What a blessing that you were able to get help!

acgill March 18, 2016 at 2:12 pm

I understand! People that are working and trying to get by need help too, not just the unemployed. It seems that work is penalized by the government although underemployment is an issue as much as unemployment.

Ashleigh W. July 10, 2016 at 12:08 am

Your penalized when you work hard to make a living, it truly is a blessing that you made it through that hard time.

Peyton Blackerby July 22, 2016 at 9:34 pm

Its sad when you get punished for working and trying to support your family and they will straight tell you to “stop working”. Its sickening to see the people out there trying to work for their family get punished while some people sit back and relax and take advantage of the system.

kbrasfield October 24, 2016 at 10:22 am

That happened to my wife when she divorced her husband and had a baby boy. She tried to get food stamps and the lady at DHS told her she made $20 to much a month to qualify. Then asked her if she was pregnant because if she was she could as much assistance as needed. My wife told her that is ridiculous because the last thing she needed after divorcing her husband and having a baby already was another kid. This is crazy how the programs are controlled and distributed, you are rewarded for being less responsible in this case.

csmart January 25, 2017 at 6:10 pm

I was also told that if I just quit my job they would give me assistance. Like anyone can afford to do that.

mbarrett228 April 12, 2017 at 3:27 pm

I was on the flip side of this situation. My mom was single. We were homeless and the government didn’t do anything.

KatelynOstrem November 29, 2017 at 10:57 pm

That situation is really hard. I am not lucky enough to have kids yet but I know from listening to my mom about what she has done to give us a good life.. It is stressful, and it warms my heart to read that you are not the sort of person to just quit your job and jump on welfare.

mpurifoy April 15, 2018 at 5:23 pm

Its tragic to see how bad it really is. Helping American citizens eat food should be one of the number one priorities and should be looked at more closely.

klane September 21, 2018 at 9:37 pm

I never realized what a issue hunger was even in Arkansas till here recently. it is very sad that in America this is a issue.

hubence October 4, 2018 at 7:56 pm

While I believe that food stamps are a great benefit for those in need, more restrictions should be enforced, purchase wise. The food stamp process is like having a full time job in itself. Then you have these people running around buying junk food instead of healthy food. Yes, junk food is cheaper, but there should be some health standard when the government is giving you resources.

ageorge5 October 24, 2018 at 12:30 pm

I can’t believe that a caseworker would promote you working less to get help from the government. I would think that people trying to work more would be more helpful to the situation. This is sad to see that the government doesn’t care as much as it should.

LogozzoM November 7, 2018 at 8:23 pm

I hate how people that actually work and try to provide for their family still struggle because living is expensive and can’t even receive a little assistance, even with food, because they make too much. The government doesn’t take into consideration what you have to spend with that money. Then you have the people that are more than capable of working, but chose not to JUST so they can get assistance, and the government allows it. It’s such a shame. It’s almost like they government would rather you be lazy.

tsamuels November 7, 2018 at 9:25 pm

we really need more help in the US for people who don’t make enough money. I know that the DHS does not count having a vehicle a necessity and for many people where I live that is far from the truth, especially when everything is a good 20 miles from where you live and there are no buses.

RLD82 November 3, 2020 at 11:24 am

I agree with Hubence. There should be more restrictions on the EBT program as far as what is and is not allowed to be purchased. I also believe that people do take advantage of the system and unfortunately have seen first hand, people selling their benefits or trading them for other items. I imagine if there was a way to control this, there would be much more benefits available to go around.

cnix March 6, 2022 at 4:03 pm

It is hard to make it with only one income. I also feel there should be other variables taken in to consideration when determining how much assistance a family can receive. Even other ideas such as food stores specifically set up for food and necessities that is government subsidized. We need change and ideas have to flow for this to be fixed

Mholyfiel April 10, 2022 at 8:28 pm

I don’t think that many realize how much some single parents and also low-income families struggle with putting food on the table.

kmclane1426 November 8, 2015 at 11:01 pm

I completely agree. Food pantries are great but if we could decrease the cost of food or increase the wages more people could afford to feed their families without relying on other sources.

Reply

astefanovic November 11, 2015 at 12:29 am

food is so expensive these days i completely agree with you and think we need to decrease food costs and mainly decrease the cost of healthy foods because the main problem is that fast food is so cheap

Megan moore February 24, 2016 at 11:51 pm

I’m perfectly fine with how things are now. If we decrease prices then other wages will have to go up. If it’s not one thing then it’s another. Everyone can’t be satisfied and we don’t need to change everything that we think is wrong.

AToney86 April 7, 2016 at 12:36 am

I couldn’t agree with you more and on top of that, you can almost forget about eating healthy because those foods are even more expensive. Changed up my diet and my grocery bill tripled while trying to eat healthier.

knichole April 7, 2016 at 5:55 pm

I agree, there shouldn’t be this many hungry people in the world. Food is expensive, and who has time to grow their own food when most people are working two jobs and have a family to raise.

Ashleigh W. July 10, 2016 at 12:23 am

Exactly! I completely agree. Food is very expensive, you cannot buy a weeks worth of food for less than a 100 dollars.

tynapp July 24, 2016 at 6:22 pm

msorrell April 30, 2017 at 2:27 pm

amcclure October 30, 2018 at 1:04 pm

We do need more food pantries and we need them close to where people have easy access to them. There are some who try to cheat the government and use food stamps as an easy way out. Those people are being greedy and not thinking of the people who can not get food stamps that really need them.

kfowler November 5, 2019 at 1:19 pm

Yes! we need more food pantries around the area. A lot of people make to much to even be on food stamps but really they may need that money more. Around this time of the year yes it reminds me as well to how thankful I am to not be going hungry and that we should do more to help the people around us that are struggling.

amello November 5, 2019 at 8:20 pm

I agree with you there, one of my favorite food programs is meals on wheels because it helps the elderly who can’t do for themselves as much sometimes.

Sgonzalez October 9, 2023 at 11:03 pm

Same here and the ones we have are not advertised to the public so they are not that known.

ggilb23 October 11, 2023 at 5:10 pm

I agree! There should be a lot more food pantries but also I think more people should want to volunteer to help those who need a meal to show that there is kindness in the world.

yhogan November 8, 2023 at 6:47 pm

Same here; it saddens me when kids’ only meals a day are the ones they receive at school. The cost of food seriously needs to go down.

It is not your fault in the slightest that you had to grow up and know what it is like to not have food. That is how it probably is for a good portion of the starving population, and that is so sad. Hopefully, we can help to limit these problems in the world.

It’s very hard growing up from a family which can hardly make ends meet especially when it comes to feeding kids. Regardless, children, all children are innocent and deserve better. As much as we appreciate those organizations that reach out on behalf of the poor and their families. My 2 pennyworth is that it is better to support their parents by giving them a job or helping them with some business so kids would not have to look to strangers all the time for provision. It’s just sad.

Sydney Nichole July 18, 2016 at 8:12 pm

I certainly agree with you as well. What is even worse is that you got ppl that take advantage of food stamps as well as elderly ppl who cant get too much in food stamps because they get retirement and/or disability. its getting out of hand. Also, I believe that the cost of food in general needs to be drastically lowered, the inflation over the last 10 years has been tremendous.

Since COVID-19 I have definitely become more aware of world hunger. My mother lives on a fixed income and I am a full time student, so we definitely know what it’s like to have to cut back. It’s hard to be able to afford good nutritious meals on a regular consistent basis. We find ourselves having to buy whatever we can to make it through the month. That usually means we end up buying and eating a lot of noodles and dollar pizzas which are not that good for you. What else are you to do though? If it is hard for us, I can’t even imagine how difficult it must be for larger families and those who are having problems finding work. The cost of food has drastically increased since the pandemic and I can only see things continuing to get worse.

ANowlin April 5, 2022 at 6:13 pm

I totally agree. The current system for determining if a family needs support to feed themselves is so complicated because a family of three at a gross income of 25,000 could get food stamps but a family of four with a gross income of 30,000 might not be able to get food stamps.

I sponsor a young girl in El Salvador, through Compassion International, and I am so very thankful for organizations like them that get help to provide food and supplies to those in need. Although, I think helping those in need should start right here in the U.S. I have never been able to or had the time to volunteer in a pantry or anything, but I hope to one day. Food banks or pantries are great things and save many families from total starvation! If everyone gave one or two cans of vegetables a week, or every two weeks, even once a month, just think of how much food these pantries could help feed needy families! As they say — a little can help much!
With our economy still so bad, and I really don’t see any change any time soon or in the future, and jobs so scarce, we all need to band together to help our own people in our communities so our children won’t go hungry!
Everyone of us need to stop and think — w2hat if it was our family in that position and needed the help or starve!

I totally agree with you, but there are some of us that do good to feed ourselves and our family at times, that can’t do one or two cans of vegetables weekly, biweekly, or monthly. I do think that it should start right here in the U.S., before we try helping any other country.

I agree with you on this. If everyone could just donate a little here and there it makes a huge difference. I like to donate to the schools when they do the backpack for students on fridays. I know I might give as much as I can afford to but atleast there is food going home so children can be kids and not worry if they will have food on the table during the weekend.

It was heartbreaking to see such little kids not have a chance at life because they are dying from hunger. I know times are hard with the economy and people are losing their jobs and not able to feed their family but this is when others need to step out and help them, and instead of buying junk food to just snack on, send food to somewhere else that can use it.

This is very true!! I make over twice of what minimum wage is and I have to work two jobs along with my fiance’s income to provide for this family of 4. Our grocery bill is around $300 every two weeks! This is us just buying meats, vegetables, water, eggs, milk, butter, and some snack foods (we prepare all of our meals, never buy ready to serve d/t our diets). Pre-nursing income, I could not be able to buy groceries like this. I would not be able to on a minimum wage income or two minimum wage incomes.

I have experienced first hand what it is like to need the help of your church and local community centers to receive free groceries. These churches and community centers are such a blessing. Over the past few years groceries (especially produce) prices seem to be rising. It’s frustrating to go to the store with $75 for two people and barely be able to afford to make a healthy meal. Then, there is the push for organic!!! $$$$$ Don’t people understand that even working middle class people are struggling. It’s so disheartening to try to feed your family healthy food on such a small budget.

It is sad to think that the elderly are to embarresed to ask for help. But I think I would be too. You go for so many years providing for yourself and your family and then you can’t anymore. It’s awful. I really feel for these people. On the thing it says that 18 billion dollars could fix world hunger. If EVERYONE donated something I think that would help. Yes, there are a lot of children dying every day around the world. It is a sad thing to see. I am aware of how greedy the rich are, but what are we going to do about it? Really, there are so many bad things in this world that just make me sick to my stomach, but what can I do about it? In some of those countries the people would rather starve than eat a cow. I know it is not all of the countries but you know what I would rather kill the stupid cow then watch my children die of starvation. I know, I know, I know, that is their way of life. America needs to realize that not every nation wants to be like us. Just think about it people, look how greedy and spoiled we are! If all the medicines in the world were not used any more then guess who would be the first nation to lose most of their population? America because we are so immunized and pumped full of prescriptions that our bodies would not survive. Oh but those third world countries and their people would sure be around. So what is the real problem here? Could it be fixed? It could, but who wants to take the time to do anything about it. You know we are all guilty of this world hunger problem, all of us. Because nobody cares about anybody else but themselves.

At this point, the best we can do is to help those that we can and continue to pray for God’s mercy and pray for people to look to Him.

But I also think about seniors. Many seniors are barely getting by. Most of them have huge expenses with medicines and health insurance supplements. I think many of them do with out food or just eat cereal or toast or canned soup. Hopefully they have family that looks in on them and make sure they have what they need. But for many, I doubt it. They also might not have air conditioning or heat because they cant afford to run it.

The only problem is there are more people who don’t care then there are those of us that do care. People are selfish, money hungry, and greedy. If it is happening to them then they would be concerned. It’s kind of like these movie stars that don’t give money to charity until something happens to them. Take Michael J. Fox for instance. When he found out he had Parkinson’s disease he sure pushed a lot of money for researching a cure. See, there are stories like that. I am getting mad so I am going to stop there.

It makes me really sad to think about people of any age going hungry. I do not see and end in sight for our economy or the problems we are all facing. My son came in the room as I was watching these videos and he said mom why are you crying. I told him how sad I was to think about kids going to bed hungry. With so many things out of our control, men, women, and children dying from malnutrition and starvation are within our capabilities to prevent, if we, as a society, would step up and take responsibility. If every person, in this world, who had plenty to eat, would take it upon themselves to help feed a starving person, we could wipe out hunger all together, possibly forever.

I can’t believe that world hunger could be controlled with the cost of what we spend on perfume. I don’t think i’m going to even wear perfume anymore. Food is expensive and there are too many people suffering for there not to be something done about it. It seems like McDonalds is contributing more by making a cheeseburger a dollar when a healthy gallon of milk cost five. I just do no get it. World hunger is an option that America is choosing to ignore. In most cases in Africa for instance the birth rate is high because of sexual assaults. I would never put my family in a situation that we could not take care of them, well not on purpose anyway. We have to be careful not to be a judge against those in finanial crisis because in our current economy nothing is certain. My heart goes out the people that struggle to find food to eat, while our biggest problem is figuring out what we want to eat.

@ Donnie, there is sexual assults every where, even in America, maybe even worst here. there could be instances of sexual assaults just as anywhere else.but that does not account 4 why people have more than 2 or 3 kids.i dont think sexual assaults is the reason why people choose to have more kids in Africa. there are large families there but one would barely hear about 18kids n counting in Africa.all the same i would be glad if u share references to your source of info so i can learn something new.

By just lending a hand we could be helping some of the most influencial and important people in our lives and we need to show them that we are there for them and care. I think you are a great person for volunteering.

Everyone knows it that the economy is declining dramatically and everyone is struggling from it. I was aware of world hunger. I hate to say it but it’s a war that will never end. This video really puts the rates into prospective for me and touchs my heart. The food banks really help people in need but they are also taken advantage of. Food is critical for our everyday life and survival. But one question that I have is that why are you going to have childern if you no you can’t provide for them? I know that no one can predict the future and things happen. But if you know that you have a one provider that has a very low minium wage income and poverty is in place why are you going to have 6 kids, when you know you cant provide for them? Just a thought. On the other hand, I know people cant control the outcome and really need help. The truth is that we are all struggling and we have to help each other.

I have just 1 kid n thats enough 4 me, but i really dont think having six or more kids is the problem in this country.there is a lot of resources.if the goverment can ammend some of those laws regulating bills thus cutting down on some of the high bills people pay then a family with 6 kids will have enough to eat than spend on unnecessarily high bills. The economy is gone bad and its burden should not be put on all citizens.those who made it bad should fix it.

There are so many people that are hungry with the prices the way they are it is hard to get food cause so many people pay so many bills to pay and to have food many people are putting bills first other than food. With work hard to find it is hard to get food. But, also there is some who would rather have their drugs instead of food. There may be so many different resources for food but, getting them is a different problem. The goverments expectations on they way people should live is real high. As for the elderly, most of them have to have their medicine so they can live so they do without food.

Such a simple fix and it still goes on. I am wondering when the world (people) got so selfish, that they don’t care or are blind to what is going on around them. My grandma sent money to a child somewhere for years and when she passed away, I took over. It just makes me sad that hunger could be fixed so easily and just a few are willing to help.

I believe on a smaller scale we need to work on our own communities first. The federal government spends fortunes on other countries yet here at home there are so many going hungry or cannot afford to buy the good foods needed. I know, I have been one of those people before. I would have loved any help I could have gotten but there was none.
Now I see all the people abusing the system. And wonder how the good could have gone so bad.

Like you I have been there and done that. For that reason alone I do contribute to my local food pantry’s whenever I can, I shop at their resale shops that they have in order to help raise funds for their outreach programs too. The Rose is a good example of one here in Malvern.

Terrie, I agree with you, we need to start in our own communities first. My boss and I work at a food pantry here where we live. Its not only helping others, its really rewarding.

I fully agree with you on that statement! I know there is starvation in a lot of countries, if not all of them, but I have always felt, we need to start here at home first and take care of our own starving families, and when we have solved that problem, then we are free to help other countries.

I understand where your coming from. I think we should all come together and help one another, that’s the only way we are all going to get through life.

The Rose, here in Malvern is only one of the food pantrys here, and they do an awesome job and I am so proud to say that I donate often to help them out.
It sometimes only takes a little to satisfy much.

World hunger is terrible. I have lived in several foreign countries and have witnessed the poverty and hunger first hand. Even when I was younger I realized the impact that these people faced every day. It would take so little to make a change. Adopt the care of a child can be done through many organizations such as “feed the Children or UNICEF” just to name a few. Also if you were to take into account at what we literally throw away at the end of each meal, then look back at this second video, maybe just maybe some life canges could start in our own homes in order to make a world wide change for someone else in much more dire need of nutrition.

The Rose is now not alone in fighting hunger in Malvern. There is another pantry that has opened up and offers help to those in need.

Wow…I was aware world hunger was very widespread but the second video really helped open my eyes to how easily this problem could be fixed. The statistic that really got me was the one that said that the US and Europe spend 13 billion dollars on perfume each year instead of spending that 13 billion to satisfy world food and sanitation costs and help save countless lives.

To me they all got to me. No one stops and thinks about how many people die from starvation in every day, minute, second or nor do they think about if its children or adults. But videos like that opens your eyes to it.

I know no one stops to think about world hunger or they say well we need to start taking care of the people and children that are hungry in america first but no one actually does anything. The government could easily stop all the extra spending on unnessary items and put our money to good use like helping to fix world hunger.

I totally agree!

YOU MUST REMEMBER ANYTHING CAN BE FIX AS LONG AS YOU ARE WILLING TO FIX IT. I THINK US SHOULD HELP ARE PEOPLE ALOT MORE THAN THEY DO. THEY NEED TO HELP ARE HUNRGY PEOPLE BEFORE ANOTHER COUNRTY.

It isn’t a matter of being “willing” to fix world hunger. Nobody on the Earth would want to let someone starve. It is a matter of having the resources needed to accommodate the number of people in the world.

It is very frustrating to know that if we Americans would just give up on one small thing that is a “splurge” we could make such a big difference!

There are people in America that are starving too. It is frustrating to know that even in our overly blessed country, we still turn a blind eye to this very issue. Most people are afraid of being shamed and judged by asking for help.
