Healthy Shopping Tips

Choose cereal with 150 calories per servings and whole grains on the ingredients list. Add 1 cup of skim milk and 1 cup of fruit to your cereal for a healthy breakfast!

Look on the label to make sure your frozen meal has around 300 to 400 calories and 800 mg (or less) of sodium. Round out your meal with produce.

Here Dawn, myLifetime.com’s Nutritionist, recommends to always pick non- or low-fat milk and yogurt. When picking a cheese, make sure the saturated fat content is under 20%. As for eggs, use eggs and egg whites.

In this clip Dawn recommends sticking to 2 healthy snacks per day between meals. Each snack should have about 100 to 200 calories. Some good options are pistachios, low-fat yogurt, or a granola bar.

I do too as well because that’s a big problem for me 🙁

Natalie Fusilier November 8, 2017 at 11:33 pm

Most Americans need to work on their portion control, including myself. We live in a world where portions at restaurants are 3x the size of how they should be, and this leads to overeating and becoming overweight.

ssmith0817 April 12, 2018 at 5:18 pm

I love good healthy foods but I definitely need to work on portioning correctly.

scarlile July 14, 2018 at 11:56 pm

Portion control is key along with staying away from junk foods and processed foods.

MandyL777 July 18, 2018 at 11:24 pm

Eating on smaller plates or in smaller containers has helped me with my portion control but I still have a long way to go because I have a mental idea that says I have to get seconds to be full.

abane July 19, 2018 at 1:29 am

I do too. I eat way more than I should

mwilson98 July 19, 2018 at 1:04 pm

acrockett6564 September 25, 2022 at 5:19 pm

I agree, I do not take the time out to portion my food. My portions are usually to bowl full.

nbarganier October 12, 2023 at 4:23 pm

I agree. I tend to eat more than I should sometimes. It shouldn’t be too hard. I remember when my mom would give me leftovers for lunch and if there was more leftovers I’d have some of my favorite meals more than once a week. It was a reward kind of but not in big portions.

The amount of foods put on a plate in American restaurants is huge and unhealthy even if it is a healthy meal.

JPearson April 6, 2022 at 1:44 pm

I agree. When the recommended portion of pistachios is 5-7, I have a hard time believing that’s what everyone needs let alone enough to satiate anyone.

cpettit8913 April 30, 2015 at 10:49 pm

I limit myself to what I eat so it isn’t so hard. I take out the food I’m going to eat and put the rest away so I don’t overeat at times. Yes it is hard sometimes but you get use to it and soon you aernt hungry anymore.

pharvey March 4, 2016 at 8:24 pm

I struggle with that too. If it tastes good, I just keep on eating even if I feel like I am about to pop.

JGarrett July 21, 2016 at 3:14 pm

I am the same way and it is the worst problem.

wevans July 24, 2016 at 2:26 pm

Absolutely! I am inclined to eat obscene amounts of what ever tastes good to me. Tons of ice cream, cookies, candy, or what ever it is that I have chosen to have. Out the window with portion size, it has nothing to do with my being satisfied. Of course to do this I would just be eating myself to death. So, regardless of my inclination, I try to eat with my mind instead of my eyes or taste buds.

vrobinson July 27, 2016 at 7:57 pm

That is a struggle I have on a daily basis. Portion control has always been a problem with me. If I like it I like it and keep eating it.

drandle November 2, 2016 at 11:18 pm

Plus the portions on the good stuff is always the smallest portion ever

Jadamson April 12, 2017 at 12:38 pm

I was always taught to clean your plate, whether you’re hungry or not because it is wasteful to do otherwise!

collinb1986 July 17, 2017 at 10:32 pm

I totally agree with this. A problem that I have always had is that I find some foods are so good! I can’t stop eating them sometimes!

Portion control is defiantly an american problem. While living in Japan I noticed that even portions in fast food restaurants were significantly smaller than here in the u.s. Packaging in the grocery sections were as well.

Catapult1 November 7, 2018 at 10:18 pm

That’s so funny. Being disciplined is the key. Knowing what you want to eat and how much. Isn’t it something that junk tastes very good. Once I figured out that chinese tastes good because of msg, I have applied my break and it has been a while.

amcclure October 30, 2018 at 1:10 pm

I have a problem with portion control also, it is so hard for me to eat and not make sure I am full. I also have a problem with buying the correct healthy foods because once you are hooked on a certain food, it not easy to get un-hooked from it. It is so hard to only eat a certain amount of food when I know I have to get full from that meal because then I will eat more and more then I am supposed to.

ageorge5 November 5, 2018 at 10:11 am

Portion control is essential for everyone but also eating healthy choices is too. It is tough to go out to eat at a restaurant and not overeat. I learned that it is better to pre-plan our meals therefore not going out.

I know portions can help you, in my case, I do not measure what I eat. I just eat and what I try is to get the healthiest food I can and eat a small amount. When I go to the grocery store most of the time I make sure not to be hungry and I make a list of all what I need to buy.

amello November 5, 2019 at 8:25 pm

Portion control is always a hard one to get established. I try to eat a small portion, then wait about 20 mins for my brain to register the food I’ve eaten. It helps if you can wait.

Try almond milk or soy milk. It is really good in cereal and alot better for you than cows milk. Buying lean cuisine, weight watchers, morning star, etc is a good way to practice portion control. I use them all the time. Its fast, easy, pretty nutritious, and the calories are already counted. Add a salad, fresh fruits or vegetables, cottage cheese, etc. to make the meal a little more filling without adding alot of calories.

The three cup rule sounds pretty legit! I’ll definitely have to give it a try. Here recently though I have been trying to eat oatmeal in the morning for breakfast and help tide me over. I catch myself snacking during the day but 12 hour shifts are killers! When I get up at 4am I am usually pretty hungry by 8 and need lunch by 12 and hungry again around 4pm…. makes it kind of hard to eat dinner with the family if I eat at 4.

Pure delicious 😀 They have a variety of foods to try; their “Chicken stuff” is pretty yummy too!! Funny thing is you find all of this is the frozen food section at Walmart- and they are pretty healthy for you.

yeah I don’t buy it on the frozen food section buying. I mean I haven’t checked them all but Im assuming the calories and sodium are gonna be over on the majority of the items in there. Or it will be tiny and I will still be hungry afterward.

Thank you! I was thinking I was the only one who noticed that she is a nutritionist who is recommending frozen food instead of fresh veggies! And I, personally, have been to dieticians and never have they ever recommended junk food or ice cream sandwiches. A little disappointed in these videos! Not once did she mention checking the sugar in these foods. Sugar is extremely important as we now have 6 month old babies with diabetes.

KLaFlora July 15, 2017 at 1:02 pm

I was more concerned with the processed foods she was promoting. However, frozen veggies are sometimes better than our fresh options. It is the way we prepare them that makes them less healthy.

Ashleigh W. July 15, 2016 at 5:54 pm

Yes and the microwave has harmful waves through your food. It you don’t have to use it just don’t. Its better to warm your food on top of the stove or in the oven.

These videos weren’t really anything I didn’t already know. Sometimes it is hard to shop for the right foods being on the go all the time. I do try to watch my sodium intake but sometimes it just doesn’t work. I am very good at eating a healthy breakfast and once a month I cheat and go all out with fried potatoes, biscuit, and sausage just to cure my craving. I also make sure I have healthy snacks with me but will improve on some of the things I take.

I think that most people should know the things that the video spoke about but sometime having it reiterated helps get us going again. I thing with being on the go all the time it is more of a discipline and getting a routine that is the most helpful.

These days I have plenty of time to eat breakfast at home before class. (No excuses there) As far as dairy and snacks – I LOVE cheese so it’s hard for me not to smother everything in it. She’s right, 1/4C is very small. I always drink skim-milk and those 100 cal packs of popcorn are great! I like the Kettle Corn bc it is a mix of salty and sweet all in 100 calories.

I need to try a different milk as well as take the time to read labels, it’d would probably do me some good and help me with my weight problem.

Reply

Barber JN November 11, 2011 at 4:39 pm

My husband does not like skim milk – he always drinks 2% but prefers Whole Milk. Whole milk is obviously not a healthy choice if you are over 2 but I drink only skim-milk. It tastes the same to me and I know that I’m sparing myself the fat without skimping on the calcium.

I also like that it is easy to stick to, because there are so many variations.

All of her tips can be worked into my everyday life. She was helpful in pointing out ways to round out the quick meals in the frozen section. I don’t have enough frozen veg. on hand and can see where it could speed dinner up if you are stir frying , which we do often. The only problem with the portioning was the fact that you still have to have self control even if you have divided the cookies into packs of 2 or 3. Right now I am not able to control myself at times so I rarely have these things in my cupboards.

When she was talking about ice cream, she pulled out a Skinny Cow Ice Cream sandwich container. My mom and I just bought those yesterday and they are awesome! 140 calories or so per serving. They have full-sized mint ice cream on a stick for 100 calories each and a Drumstick-like cone at 150 calories. The sugar and fat values are low as well.

I like the 3-cup rule in the first video; one I’m definitely going to try. I am a stickler about reading food labels, checking for fat, calories, and sodium. One thing that is always a problem at our house is portion sizes, so I think I’m going to look more at buying pre-portioned foods. One thing I’ve learned over the years is never go grocery shoppoong on an empty stomach. You’ll end up buying way more than you intended, more junk food, and fewer fruits and vegetables.

Reply

Everything you talked about happens to me. Although some of the foods may not be bad, my family eats more than one portion size too. I also have learned never to go shopping on an empty stomach. Maybe in between meals would be a happy medium

If you take the time to read labels you will be alot better off. Since I have been with my personal trainer I have been reading labels and trying to eat healthier each and every day. I was shocked at the amout of calories and fat that was in so much of the foods I ate. Portion control is awesome and can help alot when you are dieting. In general we can all make healthier choices that can lead to a more productive lifestyle. I also never use to eat breakfast and that is a huge no-no!! I now eat breakfast and like the video said I eat egg whites with a little bit of egg beaters reather than the real yolk. I actually feel so much better when I do eat a good breakfast now. If I do not have the time in the mornings then I drink a EAS shakle and eat a banana on the go. I have also learned that when you go out to eat that the poportions are so large that I ask for a togo box abd put half of my meal in there for later.

I have also been reading food labels but ever since I was a teenager honestly. It started as just looking at the calories and fat in food items but then I started to notice the ingredients and how some lists could contain up to 50 ingredients for just one food item! People sometimes make fun of me for always looking at the labels but I just don’t want to be putting garbage into my body.

I liked these videos. They were full of good shopping tips for selecting breakfast, dairy, frozen foods, snack, and junk foods.

Breakfast: 3 Cup Quickie…great idea of eating 1 cup of whole grain cereal (150 calories a serving size) with 1 cup of skim or lowfat milk, with 1 cup of any fruit.

Dairy: Always buy skim or 1% milk; yogart–look for lowfat…if you buy plain yogart, then you can add different fruits to change the flavor. Cheese–make sure that it has <20% saturated fat.

Frozen Foods: If you shop for frozen dinners with 300-400 calories with <800 grams of sodium, you can enjoy "comfort foods" such as pizzas or spaghetti in a "portion-controlled" amount.

Snack and Junk Foods: It was nice to know that even a dietician craves junk foods and give the "OKAY" to enjoy some. But a good tip: eat snacks and junk food in controlled calories and controlled portion amounts.

Reply

reimershk October 19, 2011 at 11:26 am

I’m so glad to know popcorn (especially in the 100 calorie packs or single-serving packs) is a healthy snack rather than junk food, too. They have 97% fat-free kinds that are regular (butter flavored… but not super buttery) and also kettle corn. Both are fairly low in sodium, especially the kettle corn… I don’t know the actual milligrams but it’s only 9% (regular) and 2% (kettle corn) per single serving pack of your 100% recommended per day when you read the back.

Hey! Make time for breakfast. It’s my favorite meal of the day. I eat more for breakfast than I do at any other meal of the day. My mom says that you can “eat like a king” for breakfast, but “like a pauper” for supper. In other words, eat more for breakfast because you will burn the calories throughout the day but eat less for supper because you don’t want to go to bed with a full stomach and no time left in the day to burn your calories.

I like the idea of oatmeal being healthy and keeping me full till lunch, because I have to eat every two hours or I become really cranky. So the idea of healthy snacks such as pistochios, low-fat yogurt, and even popcorn, would help me to hold over till lunch.

I always thought frozen/processed foods werent really healthy. Im going to starting look for them with 300-400 calories and 800mg or less of sodium. I can eat frozen vegtables but veggie burgers and hotdogs? I could never force myself to eat that again. But I like the idea of porition control. It gives you just enough to get what you want but, not too much were it is unhealthy. Cookies, chips, ice cream are so addictive. Once you have some you keep coming back for more but, Im going to start putting the packages away and stay with the porition control.

I always thought frozen foods were unhealthy. I remember reading that the nutrient value is decreased because of being frozen. Interesting tips

Same here, my brother use to always yell at me for eating frozen foods.

Don’t feel bad I thought the same thing! I never really ate frozen foods until recently!

Until this class I ate canned veggies. I’ve started converting the family to frozen and it’s much better.

The three cup method mentioned in the first video is something I am going to try, I often skip breakfast or get something on the run, never good for me. It helps knowing what frozen meals I need to look for. I am also going to try what I learned about snacks. I think with the snack tricks, I can leave out the junk food.

I liked the three cup method too. I can just as easily eat this on the run by preparing my fruit in a baggie, put my dry cereal in another,(I like crunch) and just drink my 1% milk with it. This may not be for everyone but it would work for me.

Everybody I think will benefit seeing this viedo and learning what snacks are better for us.

I agree. Cheap and quick snacks don’t always have to be unhealthy. We should all take lessons from these videos.

The first thing I had to realize when trying to control portion size and make better choices was that I am eating to sustain myself and stay alive, not because something is yummy. That is hard to recognize, if it is delicious, we want to clean our plate, so I would try to half my portions at restaurants etc and save some for lunch the next day. It is hard to look a teenager and say stop eating! I try to put good portions on their plates and hope that they will model this in the future. Breakfast is hard to push at our house, but I know it kick starts our metabolism if we eat and drink within 30 mins of getting up each morning. I try not to lecture too much on intake in my house, I just try to read labels and only offer things that are better choices for them. I finally have the hang of this and I just turned 40, hoping my kids will figure it out much sooner in life.

a go to snack for me is a hard boiled egg or serving of plain almonds. I always need the protein because that is what my diet lacks most of the time.

I thought those were both good ideas i’m going to try also.

I need to work on breakfast too. I usually skip it due to being in such a rush in the mornings.

I have a hard time with breakfast too. I am just no hungry in the mornings. It seems when I do eat, I get so hungry before lunch arrives.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, yet I eat it maybe once a month, due to my busy schedule. The cup method does sound like a good idea to try though.

SaraH1212 November 8, 2023 at 12:32 pm

I never eat breakfast even though it is the most important meal of the day. I need to improve my portion sizes when I eat any meal and I need to start eating breakfast.
