The good fat and bad fat video really informed me on which foods I should stay away from.
I didn’t know that Omega 3 intake was so important to your body.

I will try much harder to stay away from the trans fats and hydrogenated foods.

It did me to. I mean I knew that there was good and bad fat I just wasnt sure which foods to stay away from. I also did not know about the Omega 3 was so important.

My mother n law got on an omega 3 kick a couple of years ago and got us started on it. There is always something new coming out about the benifits of omega 3.

llj2 June 14, 2011 at 4:27 pm

This is very good letting me better understand what foods to avoid and what I can have. I do have to say I did know about Omega 3, fish oils. I have heard that for years, although I have never taken any pills. I have heard they have a fishy odor or after taste which doesn’t sound appealing. I do however try to avoid fatty beef and things like that.

I also learned a lot about good and bad fats. OMEGA-3 Fatty Acids seem to be the new topic among many health articles. There must really be something to it – I’ve heard that the OMEGA-3′s also help with people who are prone to depression.

There was alot to learn about good and bad fats, but i didn`t no it was prone to depression. Fatty acids can be a big thing when your fat and it gets you sick alot faster too. Everybody will have there own opinion on it anyways.

It is going to be hard for me to give up my beef too, and substitute it with fish…good luck.

Reply

I agree. not sure i can give up all my beef but I could probably slow down and eat more fish

Just wanted to add a comment about the fish oil in pill form. I also have heard about this for years, and started taking them myself a couple years ago. Some of them states they have a coating on them that doesn’t leave a fishy taste. Most of them work.

Reply

Koon K September 1, 2011 at 4:13 pm

My dad and boyfriend both take fish oil pills and neither of them say they have a fishy taste. Did you know you can also give those to dogs to help their skin or something like that, my boyfriends mom gives their dogs fish oil pills in their food.

hillml October 3, 2011 at 4:14 pm

I was also concerned with that. My mom takes the omega 3 and showed me a new tablet that I could take and it is red instead of the large clear gel packed capsels. They are a little more expensive but do not have the after taste.

The main theme I am seeing transcend these videos is to AVOID partially hydrogenated products and transfats, as well as, adding OMEGA-3 Fatty Acids to our diet. I am a vegetarian and do not consume animal products like the fish oil supplements. So, I found a few products that can replace the fish oil for anyone who is interested. Some products that will provide vegetarians with OMEGA-3′s are avocados, soy, seeds, nuts and olives. Also, as the video mentioned, flax seed is a great product to add to your diet, especially if you struggle with depression.

Try going either to Fisher mans Wharf in Hot Springs or Colton’s and order the smkoed salmon. I think you would like eat a few peanuts have a salad stay away from the potato, butter, sour cream, and salt though.

Video 1 We discuss fats and which fats are healthier choice and why. he biggest reason that choosing the healthier fats Like that that comes From Salmon or Mackerel the omega these show to raise ldl levels while reducing hdl levels which leads to a healthier heart. other beneficial fats are the polyunsaturated variety like canola oil, peanut oil olive oil and also monounsaturated fats. The ones that are not good for you are trans fats usually found in packaged foods like potato chips, cookies, processed foods with additives.
video 2 Trans fats. first thing the recommended amount of trans fats for a day is zero. Look for the words partially hydrogenated on any food label another word for a small government regulated amount of trans fats that can be in a serving. We learn about how this particular fat is man made through a man made process. The fact is that mother nature does a better job at making fats than man does. The one we make seems to bind to other blood cells walls which can lead to heart conditions.
Omega 3 fats fish, flax, flax seed oil, walnuts contain ALA these are the types of foods i need to put more into my diet to help contain the heart condition risk you run with type 1 Diabete

GYF June 15, 2011 at 2:10 pm

I learned from the first video that eating healthy fats can actually reduce your risk for heart disease. I knew that eating unhealthy fats, such as trans fat or saturated fats, could increase your risks for heart disease, but I never thought the opposite could produce positive effects. I think this information is very important for people to know because heart disease is the number one reason for death in the United States I also learned the differences between good and bad oils, which I think is very beneficial.

Reply

FosterKV August 18, 2011 at 2:15 pm

I didn’t know that the opposite could produce positive effects either. I’m glad it does!

Now that’s interesting to know. Some fats are good? I guess it’s a good thing I like fish so much and eat sardines packed in olive oil for a snack!

Reply

NNH June 17, 2011 at 11:32 pm

My husband loves sardines! I send them to him all the time while he is deployed in Iraq. I guess that is a good thing. I also need to seem him some tuna as well, since it has the good fish oil the body needs also.

Oh my the video was talking about putting avacado on my bagel.. No way! I prefer butter. On the other hand it was very interesting to learn about the different oils to use. I always just grab the cheapest, now i am thinking i might grab the canola! On the other video i learned about the fish oil pill, my grandma takes that! Next time i will look twice at taking it with her.

MDM2 June 18, 2011 at 11:49 pm

Avacado is good, but I so couldn’t put it on a bagel either. However, after seeing how much fat is in one tablespoon of butter, I think I’ll avoid that as much as possible too.

A BLT with Avacado is awesome. Now I just need to remove the B!

MAO June 27, 2011 at 2:28 pm

I totally agree, I don’t think I could eat avocado on a bagel, I do love avacado though. I could eat avocados by themselves.

CKL2 June 21, 2011 at 4:55 pm

I am truly learning something about the fats in my oils that I use. I am like you I grab the cheapest because groceries are high enough as it is. I realize I was wrong. I also prefer butter, but I am rethinking that as well after I heard the fat content!

Reply

NNH June 17, 2011 at 11:30 pm

I did not realized just how bad trans fat was or that it was basically man made fat. It seems worse that saturated fat. I also learned that partially hydrogenated fat is the same as trans fat. Now I know what to look for on the labels. I also need to invest in some fish oil and flaxseed because I can’t see myself eating fish that many times a week.

Reply

MDM2 June 18, 2011 at 11:48 pm

Since I decided to eat healthy I was so scared of fats and wanted to avoid all kinds. It’s good to know that I can eat some! I also didn’t know that 0.5% could be considered 0 trans fat in foods or that partially hydrogenated meant trans fat!

Heart disease runs in my family on both my parents sides. So I know that I need to cut my fat intake down and start eating healthy fats. I also knew there was alot of fat in butter, but not that much fat, so I guess I need to cut some butter out of my diet as well. The fish oil was interesting as well. I am gonna to check into fish oil next time I am at store because I am not a big fish eater. Great informative video and good examples given for healthy fats to eat.

I never realzied how beneficial Omega 3′s were. They benefit the body in so many ways. I didn’t realize what an important role they played in prevention of cardiovascular disease. I also was not aware that fish oil could ease pain from rheumatoid arthritis. I also was shocked to learn that if something says it has zero transfats that could be untrue, if it has less than 1/2 they can say it is zero. The only way to know for sure it to check the ingredients. Partially hydrogenated means the same as transfat.

This is really informative. I learned that you should eat a trans fat free diet, look on labels and make sure it doesn’t include partially hydrogenated oils, which is the same thing as trans fat.
I find it interesting how good Omega 3 is for the body. I will take into consideration taking fish oil supplements to help me with dysmenorrhea.

i recently stopped eating the french fries in my value meals at the fast food places and only the sandwhich or nuggets or whatever. I not only feel better but have improved my figure as well. I still order them if getting a drink becase it is after all “a value meal” I do sneak in one or two sometimes but hey atleast it is a step in the right direction. plus my dog enjoys getting an occasional fry too.

I have also heard about the fish oil in pills. I always thought it sounded like such a gross idea… but my mother swears by them! There are so many kinds of good and bad fat… it will take time and patience to monitor and maintain a healthy balance of each. But it will be SO worth it in the long run!

Watching all of these videos makes my mind start rolling, on what I eat knowing that I shouldn’t.This class rocks, just for the record. Once again not only am I reapplying what I was taught in Anatomy I and II but I also can bring what I know from work and apply it to this class. Choosing the right types of dietary fats to consume is one of the most important factors in reducing the risk of developing heart disease. Unsaturated fats when eaten in moderation and used to replace saturated or trans fats, can help lower cholesterol levels and reduce your risk of heart disease. Veggies are a good substitute for saturated or trans fats. There are two types of fat that should be eaten sparingly: saturated and trans fatty acids. Both can raise cholesterol levels, clog arteries, and increase the risk for heart disease

Reply

reimershk August 25, 2011 at 8:49 am

I knew trans fats were unhealthy, but I didn’t understand why before this class. It makes sense they are unnatural, but I didn’t know they actually incorperate into cells.

Hamilton SJ October 9, 2011 at 11:52 am

It really does help having a professional (or two) explain all of this. It’s one thing to know that certain things are bad for you… but to learn WHY is a totally different ball game, I agree.
