I have taught my three grandsons to eat “Green Trees” & “White Trees” and to bulldoze them through ranch dressing. Therefore they love Broccoli & Cauliflower! Gotta be creative. What we really love & make fun so do they.

I like watch the video and see that i`m making the right choose in feeding my kids. This video gave alot of good information to use with kids and how to use . I like the ideas and plan to use some of them on one of my kids that gives me problems on eating healthy.

I loved the 3rd video. Specifically designed to help you trick your kids! I think it’s a great idea and wish my parents would have used these tricks on me. It would have made eating some of the necessary foods a non issue instead of being a negative ordeal. I know that a lot of parenting revolves around out thinking your kids but I never thought it could be applied it in this sense. Great info!!

I really liked the 3rd video too JM2. In fact, with little tricks we can really improve the eating habits of our kids. Good tips.

So all of these tips to get your children to eat healthier is the most interesting yet! I try to make my kids eat plenty of vegetables, even if they eat chicken nuggets or pizza. I think i am going to look more into these websites so i can learn more about good nutrition.

Yes these tips are interesting, but in a good way. My kids love vegetables like me expect one and she a pain but is learning to deal with it and eat them for her own good.

I have never been a fan of vegetables and fruits, so its hard to eat them and eat the right portion of them. But I like how in the video they incorporate vegetables in the kids meals without them knowing what they are eating. Its hard these days to make sure your kids eat the right healthy food everyday to maintain a good weight.

In my opinion, the key to getting your children to like healthy foods is to never allow them to have unhealthy foods in the first place. Instead of giving them the option of a brownie when they are so young why not train them to like fruits as their “sweet” snack. Or make banana ice cream from frozen bananas instead of high fat ice cream. We give our children way to many options because we want to please them. Parenting isn’t about pleasing our children all of the time and giving them what they want. Okay – I have no kids and I am humble enough to know that a lot of my opinions will probably change but here is my objective view while I am not a mother. I tend to side with the “tiger” mom at this point.

Reply

LLM June 17, 2011 at 12:25 pm

I agree, never give the kids an option of junk food instead ask what fruit they want for a snack. I do not have kids of my own but I hope one day when I do, I will stick to my ideas and help them always eating healthy.

JM2 June 18, 2011 at 10:35 pm

I totally agree. One of the things my mother kept out of our house when I was young was cereal with lots of sugar. We could eat Corn Flakes or Wheat Thin type of cereal. To this day I don’t have the desire to eat any of the sugar loaded cereals. My wife on the other hand was raised on Fruity Pebbles. She can’t stand my “high fiber” cereals and I won’t touch her candy cereal. Thanks Mom for training me to at least eat healthy cereal!!

JLA June 15, 2011 at 7:19 pm

There are some good ideas here to get kids to eat better. I try to not take mine out to eat more than once a week anymore. I also buy cereals that are good for them instead of the stuff we used to buy. My kids are not overweight by any means, but I try to tell them if you don’t have good habits it will sneak up on you when you get older.

vid 1 The change from the food pyramid. I grew up as a young diabetic on different diets always using the food pyramid and it troubled me for years until the Lower Glycemic index came along. Although I think the pyramid is a good example of how to stack food in your stomach. The lower glycemic index promotes lower in sugar and higher in fiber which tends to cause people to eat less. Do not eat white foods.
vid 2 Picky eaters, moms and dads need to involve children in the grocery shopping. let them make choices and show them healthy choices.A healthy thing might be to buy a rainbow color of fruit and vegetables. This would teach them what spectrum of choices and find the like more than they did before.
vid 3 How to sneak vegetables into kids diets. A food processor is a great wya to do so their are many dishes you can puree vegetables and hide them in foods some you know will accent the taste. So get to adding some extra fresh veeies to their diets.

I started buying cereal that was high in fiber about a year ago. Never thought to look on the kids lunchables to see the sugar content. Definitely will start paying more attention to the sugar labels.

Reply

J. M.O. June 15, 2011 at 6:22 pm

I am a labeholic I look at the label of anything I have not bought before. I always look at the grams of sugar. I will not buy anything higher than 7g.Except for the fact I have gotten to the point where i buy pretty much the same things over and over again S it least I do not have to look at so many labels..

That is so cool – sneaking veggies into kids meals 🙂 I have actually tasted an awesome avocado chocolate pudding too. Avocadoes tend to take on many different flavors including chocolate. For anyone who wants the recipe, here it is: http://articles.cnn.com/2008-05-26/entertainment/mraz.recipe_1_avocados-agave-nectar-carob?_s=PM:SHOWBIZ
Mraz’s Chocomole Recipe
Mash up 5 ripened avocados
Add 1 – 2 cups of chopped or blended dates
1 soft cup of raw cacao
1 easy cup of raw carob powder
1 tbsp. vanilla
Add a few long pours of agave nectar to sweeten to liking
Then add half cups of cocoa and keep adding until chocolate taste is right. Careful not to overdo it — if you add too much, it can get bitter.

I’m glad there is not a limit to the amount of fruits they can eat because my children love fruit, vegetables we have a problem with and I blame myself because I don’t eat alot of them. I am certainly going to have to try some of the suggestions in video 2 although they sound kind of scary to me.

Reply

aak2 June 6, 2011 at 3:16 pm

Video 3 is also my favorite! I think that I should still have my mom cook for me and throw those things into my meals. It really is a good. They will probably never know. I thought it was interesting how they said that kids are shown a vegetable 10 to 15 times before actually trying it. Every kid loves ranch! So having some light ranch with their veggies is a good idea also! I also didn’t know we had an old food pyramid. What is the difference between the two?

Reply

J. M.O. June 15, 2011 at 6:25 pm

it is a lot of help to hide the vegetable by puree and adding to dishes most the time nobody even notices.Another good way is like you were saying make vegetable and fruit trays with a little lite ranch for them.

i never had a problem with my oldest daughter liking veggies and fruits but i did with meat. but know that she is getting older she still likes her veggies and fruits but would rather eat chocolate and skittles. we never keep these items in the house for i fear she might stray away from the healthier choices. but the tricks that they showed were really informative and easy so it looked. portion control is alot of our problem as well but its nice to know that they can have as much as they want.

I really like clip #3. I know the value of eat vegetables I don’t eat vegetables and so it hard to teach my son to eat more vegetables too. I need to find more vegetables for us to incorporate more vegetables in our diet.
As for the new food guide pyramid they’ve just released a new one June 2, 2011. It called “MyPlate” and its supposed to show you the food groups on a plate (duh) but what I think is missing is the physical activity that was introduced in the 2005 pyramid. I prefer the 2005 “MyPyramid”. I think it more about finding about what specifically works for your body and you life style.

I absolutely loved the last video on sneaking veggies into children’s food. I had to watch it again so I could write down the tips. My kids are pretty good about eating there vegetables except my youngest who is 7. He will eat salad all day though. I always wanted to know how I could make something I like more nutritious. The beans being substituted for butter is something I am going to try. I have recently heard about an avocodo shake that is really tasty and very good for you. Sounds strange but I am willing to try it because I love avocodos. So this video can be good for adults to!

I was so unaware Lunchables were so bad. I think a huge problem with obesity is people are unaware at their unhealthy choices.
Including children in the process of choosing their snacks is an excellent way to get them to make the right decisions on their own time. Starting young really sets the stage for later in life.
The last video made me laugh because I believe my mother did all of these things because I was such a picky eater.

lmp2 June 5, 2011 at 8:02 pm

i had no idea either. i thought they were the perfect choice for a field trip you got your meat cheese and bread all in one meal and its prepackaged. i am glad i know now cause my child loves them. i knew they seemed to good to be true.

I was not aware that lunchables were bad too. I love lunchables. I still eat them everynow and then. It is an easy way to make kids lunches everyday. Instead I guess parents need to be paking carrots and sandwiches on wheat bread and adding a fruit in there for dessert.

From my experience most prepackaged meals are bad choices. What I’m getting from each new set of videos is that you have to be invested in your health by taking the time to shop, cook, and eat healthy. If you want prepackaged you are going to have to find the time to prepackage the stuff yourself from healthy choices. I don’t envy parents when it comes to their kids and food.

I am loving the video on sneaking the veggies in your child’s food. These are some great tips on what to mix it in and how. I am really excited to try this. My son eats pretty good for a teenager but I have to admit we are busy a lot and skip the healthy snacks. I think it is great the manufacturers are now making their snacks in easy to go containers. For people who do have a busy lifestyle this will make snacking so much easier for parents.

I have to admit, I have fallen into the trap of letting my kids eat what they want, as a snack, when they come home from school. But lately, I have tried to be more consciencious of what I buy at the grocery store for them to snack on. I’ve also started giving them a multivitamin to help them acquire the vitamins and minerals they need, but don’t get in their diet.
And sneaking the healthy things into other foods is a great idea. May have to try that with my husband, too.

It is very important for children to eat healthy. Lot of healthy foods were suggested for their snacks. String cheese, yogurt, low fat milk, fruits (grapes, blueberries, strawberries, or even fruit salad), vegetables with fat free ranch for dipping, and trail mix (cherrios, raisins, and nuts). Women who eat fruits and veggies while pregnant increase their children’s chances of liking those foods. I was suprised to learn that most kids have to be shown a vegetable 10 to 15 times before they will try it.

I have noticed that taking my kids to the store to shop for food is a lot easier on buying things that they want to eat. Since this class me and the kids have been looking at healthier fruits and veggies, and the kids are enjoying the information that I am giving them on what I am learning on healthier eating. Good information. My kids (both) do not like tomatoes in their food but we have had them sit down and watch some of the videos on this site and they now understand why they need to eat healthy. Cabbage in tuna does not sound good even tho I love cabbage, but I just might have to try that one.

I have a 6 yr old boy and 8 yr old girl and it is the other way around for me, my daughter who was born 2 months early will eat anything I put in front of her and she eats them really fast and always ask for seconds. My son who was full term and born very healthy and is never sick is the pickest eater I have ever had out of 7 children. He will not eat veggies or meat unless there is a promise of a healthy snack afterwards.

One thing I didn’t know was that eating fruits and vegetables while breast feeding can boost the chances of your child liking those foods. This is good because it is beneficial because of the nutrients you are taking in, but it can help build a better eating habit foundation for the unborn child later on in life .

So my favorite video would have to be the last one because I came from a family where if the food was on your plate you had to eat it even if you didn’t like it and that way if and when I have kids and they don’t like something I can mix it in with other foods. Also the saying “White fluffies to brown crunchies” is something very catchy and easy to remember when eating healthy. Also when I go to have children I will more than likely be the type of mother who buys already packaged, healthy snack foods for on the go.

This video was very imformative to let us know that kids need to watch what they eat. Children need more fiber and protein in their diets and not was much starchs and sugars. As a kid I can remember my grandma and mom trying to trick me into eating the “good” food and I always caught onto the trick because I loved the “bad” food.

Reply

Taylor B October 6, 2010 at 11:28 pm

OK. I, too, like the phrase “Switch from white fluffies to brown crunchies!” I know that kids need to eat more foods that are high in fiber and proteins, and low in sugar. Really that’s a good phrase for everyone to follow. White fluffies such as mashed potatoes, white rice, and white breads are not good for us. They are high in starches and sugars.

But, I don’t think I could trick anyone, not even a kid, by adding pumpkin to pancakes or blending veggies into brownies–sounds disgusting to me. Think I’d rather just eat the veggies as veggies and limit my intake of yummy brownies!

I think the quote could be very catchy, “White fluffies to brown crunchies.” I really liked the idea of mixing veggies with cakes and brownies or even pancakes. Great information.
I also like the part about how manufacturers are packaging food for convenience to the parents. My problem with it is, the cost ,it is way more expensive than packaging it yourself. Take 30 min on the weekend and package your own. Young families are generally not financially set. So we need to keep in mind that they can be taught ways to save money also. Not just “oh look, these are available buy them.”
I’m just saying… box of cheerio’s $4.00 , prepackaged individual servings which yield either 4 or 8 small servings, (baby size) $ 3.00. Which is more cost effective.

MRC2 M Cottrell June 6, 2011 at 2:54 pm

I totally agree with your wisdom of self-packaging the foods we buy. I myself have four children and know the beauty of saving money, even if it is $1.00. I like going to the local Sam’s Club and buying most of my food in bulk, if it is available. I will take the food home and separate it into smaller packages. Fruit is a fun one to do this with. If you put single servings of fruit or even veggies in those snack sized zip-loc bags, the kids will eat them. They feel like they are more special just because they are in those little bags. We eat a lot of salad so breaking a tub of fresh greens into individual containers makes it easier to grab when anyone needs a quick bite on the run.

“White fluffys to brown crunchies,” I like the saying and the meaning. It is saying kids need to eat foods that are low in sugar and high in fiber. No more white bread, rice, and potatos. Switch to whole grain bread, brown rice and high fiber cereal. It helps with eating less during the day, weight loss, and increase in exercising. I love the idea of grabbing little healthy pagged snacks like string cheese, fruit salad, and yogurt. I never knew 100% of juice would make a difference in fluid. I think it is an awesome idea to sneak vegatables into yummy foods. Like blending vegatables into meats, cookies, and brownies. What jumped out at me was that women who eat vegtables and fruits and breast feed their childern. The child is more likely to like that certain type of food. Great Information!
