I had no idea just how important magnesium is, and the wide variety of symptoms that a deficiency can cause. My sister in law has claimed for years (and I scoffed at it), that taking magnesium and cutting back on sodas and coffee would help to lessen menstrual cramping. Sounds like there is something to it!

I cannot wait to try Magnesium the next time I get cramps! I’m also excited to look at what my multivitamin provides. I don’t take it regularly but I’m about to start after hearing this!

Before this video, I didn’t know that it could help with muscle spasms or menstrual cramps . It is a good idea to use during those times.

I get some of it in my daily vitamins and I’m sure if I didn’t take them I’d have it harder. It is new to me that it helps with muscle cramps.

It is good to see your perspective as a nurse and I didn’t know magnesium could help with cardiac arrest.

EWalters October 9, 2015 at 11:26 am

I am a critical care nurse, and it’s true that most of my patients have low magnesium. In fact, we actually have a protocol for replacing magnesium and other electrolytes. It’s rare for me to work a shift without hanging a bag of magnesium. And in emergency situations like cardiac arrest, we give a bolus dose of magnesium.
Many of our patients suffer from chronic wounds. These are usually treated with some type of zinc, like a zinc oxide cream, to help them heal.

HunterMcWhorter February 24, 2016 at 10:15 pm

I had no idea that is what they do when chronic wounds have been inflicted. useful information

Thank you for your input! I never realized it’s great importance! One thing that I do know is that if you take too much magnesium it will cause diarreah. I discovered this for myself, unfortunately. I was using it for leg cramps.

Molly Harvey September 7, 2016 at 3:10 pm

I am a step down nurse on a cardiac renal floor, and we too have an Electrolyte Protocol where I am also giving potassium or magnesium. It is amazing how these supplements can make a huge difference in the health of a patient. We too also use Zinc for wound healing with good results.

afriedl October 5, 2016 at 5:34 pm

This is extremely informative as I am in nursing school now!

jrousu October 11, 2017 at 2:36 pm

Thanks for your input, I am learning all about these in nursing school. Just learned how Mag sulfate is used in L/D during this rotation ( preterm labor,preeclampsia/eclampsia). I used Zinc on med surg a lot with the wound nurse.

I LOVE the video on magnesium!! I have actually been researching magnesium a lot lately because recently my doctor, I have referenced him before, he tries natural approaches first and foremost and he told me (I am awaiting the lab results to be certain) that he believes I am magnesium deficient like a lot of Americans are! This is a hugely effective and important mineral for so many symptoms we experience… my big problem is Anxiety! But many of the things listed I could relate too and what do they link too… Magnesium deficiency! I totally agree that instead of everyone running to prescription drugs, Ex. antidepressants and so forth they should try this very accessible and effective method first! I think more doctors should educate and suggest this before the prescription route… studies that have been done on this have very positive results on the advantages. I can’t express enough through what I’ve researched of how convinced I am that lots of people have this deficiency and don’t know it.

Reply

Ssmith5449 November 29, 2015 at 5:15 pm

I agree that instead of running to the doctor with depression, alternative therapies could benefit you more. I have struggled with a lot of the symptoms of this deficiency and instead of being sick on many different levels I may just have a magnesium deficiency!

Reply

Ashleigh W. July 7, 2016 at 8:00 pm

I wish they would educate us more in school about the need for minerals, and all the benefits. It is better to take a natural approach for healing.

Reply

That’s so interesting, and I agree totally. It is amazing that a lot of the troubles that we take medicine for could be fixed more naturally by simply changing our diets to get more of the nutrients, minerals, and vitamins that we need! I too struggle with anxiety. I would love to hear my doctor’s thoughts on its link to something like a magnesium deficiency.

Reply

hjohnson September 30, 2019 at 12:09 am

I agree. It really is crazy. My dad has a friend who was bit by a tick and developed lyme disease. She had to change her diet drastically. She can’t eat anything with additives or GMOs. She also can only have spring water. It has been super hard on her but she has also noticed a change in her energy and how healthy she is now. She is constantly moving and going. It is like she doesn’t even have a disease.

jwilson15 October 11, 2017 at 11:58 pm

It is true that most people jump to conclusions and start taking the first medicine they think will improve their symptoms of such things as anxiety and depression. I also suffer from anxiety so this video helped me to look at my options differently and not jump to conclusions on the cause.

I would assume that there is a huge lack in calcium consumption today. With such prevelance of sugary dinks and sodas, I would assume that there aren’t many children or adults getting enough daily calcium. Older people especially need to be mindful of thier calcuim to keep thier bones strong and prevent osteoporosis, just as this video mentioned.
As far as magnesium, who would have known it was so critical! I never knew that lack of magnesium could cause death, or on the flipside cure many things from constipation to pre-term labor.
I never realized that zinc was crutial to the healing process. Also, I didnt know that certain dietary lifestyles, such as being a vegiterian, can require higher levels of zinc intake.

I realize the importance of Ca but I’m wondering why we always emphasize proper intake of Ca for bone health when, at times, if there are too high deposits it can lead to artery stenosis caused by Ca deposits that lead to heart issues. I’ve seen this in patients at the heart clinic where I work. Bone health is important but we have to be careful of calcium and fat intake that might affect the heart.
Many of the patients are place on Mg which helps to relax tissue and heart muscle.

I can’t drink straight milk either. However, an alternative that I found that I could handle, I don’t know about you, is chocolate milk. I get the organic chocolate milk, because it does not contain formaldehyde. Chocolate milk is also a good post-workout drink because, along with calcium, it also contains many nutrients that promote better health, and muscle growth.

I never knew how important calcium is in my diet. It is a good thing I love milk and cheese. My family has always been big dairy eaters. I didn’t know magnesium was even important, but I do now.

I think that is a great idea to take a multi vitamin for reasons such as this. Just in case we do not know ALL of the vitamins that are good for us or all of the vitamins that we are missing from our daily regiment

I HATE milk but I am going to try to increase my intake of dairy products to provide myself with more Calcium. Also, magnesium has much more uses than what I ever knew! I am probably deficient and don’t even know. Relaxation time!

I’m the opposite I have to have my milk every morning, I drink it instead of coffee. I also love cheese, I’ve always told everyone if you want me to go on a diet that doesn’t let me have cheese, FORGET IT!

I am the same. I love cheese! I would hate to be Lactose intolerance.

i did not know calcium was not made in the body. I need strong bones and I will have to add this to my diet and my childs as well. We eat a lot of cheese and milk so I know that helps.

I did not know that calcium was not made in the body. It is hard for people, like me and most my family, that are allergic to milk to get the right amount of calcium needed for strong bones. I never new that magnesium was so important. It said a person that is deficient of it is twice as likely to die. That is kind of scary. Sounds like I will definitely be checking into these to see what all I need to be eating.

I did not know that calcium is not made in the body as well as that we need a 1000 mg a day wow

I know I prrbably do not get nearly enough calcium everyday, but I had no idea that I also needed magnesium and zinc. I try and take a multivitamin to help fill any gaps in my vitamin and mineral intake but I think maybe I will try to start eating more of the vegetables that were mentioned to give me what I need, after all I don’t always remember to take my vitamin.

My boss take almost every kind of vitamin it seems and she told my the reason of why you need zinc and magnesium. It is pretty interesting of why we need all these vitamins and how they contribute to the body.

I am the same way! I take a multivitamin and I do not think it is covering all I need it too! I need to make sure I start consuming foods with magnesium!

These are very helpful pieces of information for zinc and calcium. I never knew magnesium was used for a variety of things as the man stated in the video about the ER.

I had no idea that magnesium was so important! I know my diet consists of a bunch of calcium but maybe I should supplement more of my calcium rich diet into a more calcium-magnesium rich diet

I find it shocking that calcium is not made in the body yet it’s required for our bones and teeth. I never would have guessed that magnesium was used for so many elements in the body. Often when people have muscle cramps like charlie horses, I’ve always head it was because of potassium deficiency not magnesium. I never knew anything about zinc especially that it helps heal wounds.

The major takeaway I had from the three videos was to eat more nuts and beans. They are the two most accessible foods in my household with zinc and magnesium. My family does well with calcium, but the magnesium video really opened my eyes. I will immediately raid the pantry to find foods that provide magnesium and consider taking a supplement.

We keep a crock pot at my office and at least three days a week we cook beans for lunch. We have gotten pretty crafty with them.

I didn’t know calcium wasn’t made in the body! I knew what it was good for though! Magnesium I have never paid attention to and I definitely need to use it haha because I get all of those problems that he named off! I love Epsom salt baths which was a plus to hear. Zinc is an unfamiliar mineral and not as interesting as I thought it would be so I never paid attention to it. I did not know what it was even good for! Good thing I eat the foods she named off!

Looks like milk will have to be increased in my diet.
I like pecans, almonds, and walnuts, these too must increase.
Zinc will work, I like beef, beans, and pork.

I’m the “nut” person. I eat nuts like crazy! I think I’ve got the nuts down, but I need to do better about drinking milk…well cow milk, not almond milk. Lol.

I knew calcium was important, but I never knew HOW important! I know I don’t get enough calcium in my diet, and my mom has always told me to take a multivitamin to make up for that but I never listened! Mom is always right, maybe now I’ll start listening!

Calcium has been my life saver. I’ve had two children and with both I had many complications during and after they were born. The ball and socket of my hip and femur caused me pain every single time I moved. I started to take calcium to see if it would help and it only took one day for the pain to subside. As for Zinc and Magnesium. I actually have a supplement that is the two combined. Zinc helps with burns a great deal and magnesium has helped me with leg cramps. I used to have leg cramps so bad when I would try to sleep but taking the magnesium and zinc together has caused all cramps to go away. I don’t even get Charlie horses anymore when I sleep awkward. These 3 supplements are all very good for us and we should be consuming more foods that contain them to keep up good health and well-being.

Well I guess I need magnesium and zinc. I thought I was just getting tired because of my crazy life and getting older. It would be nice to add this vitamins to my diet and not be so tired and not have a headache everyday.

I watching the information on magnesium, it appears my whole family would benefit. We all suffer from headaches and being tired. We are ready to try it out.

btubbs January 29, 2014 at 9:00 am

I knew that calcium and zinc were very beneficial although I had no idea that magnesium was so important. If I feel that I am starting to get sick I will start eating zinc and vitamin C, and pounding the water. Im sure most of you have heard of Zicam. The stuff does work but the major ingredient in it is zinc.

I always start drinking orange juice when I start feeling sick, but I had never thought about zinc helping too, I’ll have to try it next time I start to get sick.
