I personally LOVE carbs! I think it is very important for everyone to understand the difference between good carbs and bad carbs. Because Carbs do get such a bad rap, but yet they are definitely needed by the body. Like for instance when people cut all carbs on certain diets… that can be very harmful to their health!

I did not know there are two different carbs, good and bad carbs. Thank you for the informative video to help me to know more about carbs.

Be cautious in your diet of what carbs you take in. Make a grocery list of what you get then look up on the internet if you are taking in more bad carbs than good.

knichole February 28, 2016 at 9:07 am

That is a fantastic idea, I think I too should look up how many good and bad carbs I would be takining in. Proper regulation of carbs will help your diet in the long run.

JPrichard March 3, 2016 at 5:54 pm

I had no idea either. I will remember this when I go grocery shopping and ill tell my family about this video so they can eat healthy with me!

RAPAPM September 30, 2016 at 12:18 pm

I just thought carbs were carbs. Didn’t know there were good carbs and bad carbs. Just you learn something new everyday.

HeyY'all February 12, 2017 at 1:26 pm

I knew there where good carbs and bad carbs but I did not know what foods had good/bad carbs.

idelatoba February 28, 2017 at 12:06 am

Hello, Agnes, I knew there were two different types of carbs but I never took the time to separate them and eat the ones that are good for me. I still really don’t. I guess because I am not overweight I think I can eat what I want, maybe it will catch up to me when I get older.

mfranklin1` March 11, 2017 at 12:14 pm

carbs are ok as long as they are consumed in moderation. moderation is the key here.

nwade October 6, 2017 at 9:33 pm

I did know this. There are also good sugars and bad sugars. Fruits and veggies are the way to go.

Awilliams23 October 11, 2017 at 4:46 pm

I’ve realized how many bad carbs I am taking in when I made my grocery list. Thank you aellis

Adiehl October 3, 2019 at 11:25 am

Before taking a nutritional class I never really cared what I ate and if it was healthy or not. However, after taking my class I realized just how important it is to eat good carbs rather than bad carbs.

yhogan October 10, 2023 at 11:33 pm

I knew there were good and bad carbs, but I do not pay attention to care, which is probably not good.

nbarganier October 11, 2023 at 8:30 pm

I also did not know there was two different types of carbs. Thanks to the video we know what to look for.

koliver2054 June 30, 2015 at 3:54 pm

I totally agree we need both kinds of crabs but the video did a great job of explaining them. I also love crabs and probably eat to many bad carbs.

Reply

cnix January 29, 2022 at 11:24 am

I agree that we have to have both. A diet should be well rounded and proportionate.

Shannon Williams August 20, 2015 at 9:45 pm

I love all the carbs! Especially the bad ones. I need to cut all the foods I love and learn how to eat healthy fruits and vegetables! Yuck! Learning to eat correct is like learning a foreign language, its very hard but with discipline it can be done.

Reply

dhouse2 October 18, 2016 at 12:53 am

once the habit is broken its not that bad things do taste good you learn how to cook them or prepare them. just have to find the way you like them then go from there.

msorrell April 29, 2017 at 11:40 pm

I agree, I definitely need to cut back on my bad carbs. It’s so hard to eat healthy sometimes!

KatelynOstrem October 5, 2017 at 12:09 am

Carbs are always my go to food.. I really should cut back on them. Maybe taking this class will help.

mclark8 October 11, 2017 at 6:23 pm

I love carbs too! It is so hard for me to steer clear of the bad carbs. Definitely happy to know there are at least good carbs.

Jodie Hammonds February 27, 2018 at 9:35 pm

I totally agree! I have learned that seasonings can really take a bland veggie to the next level! Throw some olive oil into the mix, and roasted veggies can be really good.

lmehalic March 5, 2018 at 9:46 pm

I am just like you! I love all my carbs. It really does take practice but eventually it will be like second nature.

stephanie rogers March 6, 2018 at 6:43 pm

I love carbs too especially potatoes. Luckily I like fruits and vegies even more so hopefully I’m getting more of the good then the bad.

sburris4 March 6, 2018 at 9:37 pm

It is very hard trying to eat correctly. It’s even harder depending on your job and with bad discipline. I have a hard time trying to eat correctly. And I like your example with the foreign language.

ssmith0817 March 11, 2018 at 11:27 pm

I love bad carbs too but I am slowly learning that good carbs are way more filling and help you stay full longer!

Hsowell October 10, 2023 at 10:38 pm

Carbs are not my friend. After bariatric surgery the Np wanted you to have no more than 10 a day!

lwebb August 22, 2015 at 4:25 pm

I never knew that there was a such thing as good and bad carbs. I always thought they were all bad!

Its good to know the truth about carbs and proteins especially as we get older and many of the effects of foods and our health choices start to become more apparent through our body and its reaction as well as physical condition.

chelseavhunter January 14, 2016 at 12:49 am

The truth about carbs and proteins becomes important information as we get older as it may start to have effects on our health so to be aware his knowledge we can slow down the aging process and make the transition of age slow down and less intense.

srussell September 12, 2016 at 2:06 pm

I always thought that all carbs were bad for you. Who knew there were good and bad.

krichards3 March 7, 2017 at 11:44 pm

I never knew there were bad carbs and good carbs either. I thought all carbs were bad. I have heard of girls cutting all carbs out of their diets so I guess maybe that’s why I assumed they were all bad.

tscales October 2, 2018 at 11:17 am

I didn’t know either. Not that I ever stayed away from them tho lol.

Kmclane1426 August 31, 2015 at 10:58 pm

I have learned a little bit about carbs before, however it is still hard for me to understand them. I have been told that anything white is bad for you. I also heard not to eat to many of certain fruits. These videos have helped me learn what carbs are good and what carbs are better for you.

drandle October 3, 2016 at 5:09 pm

I agree. It is so hard keeping up with all that is supposed to be a good carb and a bad carb. This video was helpful though!

BMcGriff1227 March 6, 2017 at 4:37 pm

I have been trying to learn more about carbs but it’s so hard to always remember the good from the bad. With going to school, work and taking care of my nephew sometimes it just easier to run to the store grab something or even go to a fast food restaurant . I’m going to try and start looking in to the good carbs. hopefully it will work out good!

smcneely24 January 30, 2018 at 9:00 pm

I also had some background knowledge on carbs, but I wasn’t too sure as to which ones I should focus on to eat either. The video really helped clear up my fore knowledge.

klane August 26, 2018 at 6:44 am

I also thought that all carbs were bad for me. It’s very hard to keep up with which carbs are good and which are bad. I have been told my entire life that all carbs were bad.

amcclure October 4, 2018 at 2:03 pm

I have never heard of eating a lot of fruits is bad for you. I may have to look in to that because I love eating fruits. I always thought fruits were healthy for you.

Alexis Smallwood October 1, 2015 at 11:40 pm

It can be harmful to your health to cut carbs! Like the news clip said that you have to have carbs! Even people who go on protein diets have to watch what kind of protein they are consuming because it can cause health issues later on in life.

Carbs give you energy! Fruit is a great carb.

alec_young2 July 3, 2016 at 6:56 pm

I agree. My sister has been on a low carb diet for a couple of months now, and it worries me because I don’t want her energy levels to significantly decrease. I plan to inform her about good carbs and let her know that she can still get energy in a healthy manner.

vrobinson July 6, 2016 at 11:10 pm

Carbs are something we all need and its crazy to think just how much stuff is made up of it.

Averyel85 October 26, 2016 at 7:07 pm

Yeah low carb diets definitely had me feeling really sluggish and I had less energy.

csmart January 22, 2017 at 6:57 pm

I thought they were all bad carbs so when I wanted to do the low carb diet like you, I took it to the extreme and tried to cut them all. Watching this i realize how important carbs really are.

bburks March 1, 2017 at 7:59 pm

They are definitely my weakness too. I can still have carbs, just not the ones I typically have. I liked that they explained why certain ones were “bad” and substitution options.

KLaFlora June 23, 2017 at 12:09 am

Carbs are most everyone’s weakness. It is a struggle to not choose the bad carbs and to not over eat the good ones.

mcunningham February 22, 2016 at 7:24 pm

Up until recently I didn’t know there was such a thing as “good carbs”. Now I know and I am so glad I know because that is something everyone should know and they should also know the difference between good and bad.

I felt the same way. I had an idea that some carbs were good and some carbs were bad, but I didn’t really know how to distinguish them. I’m happy to have a starting point that is going to help guide future decisions. White, bad. Brown, good.

abane June 27, 2018 at 2:07 am

I never knew there was a difference I thought carbs were all under one category. I guess some things we don’t learn unless we further our education.

hannapatrick June 27, 2018 at 10:51 pm

I also had no idea there was such thing as a good carb. Whenever I hear anything about carbs I think that it is a bad food for you. That’s also why when people talk about going on a diet they say they are cutting carbs out of their diet but most can not do it that I have been around.

Not only can cutting carbs be bad for your overall health, it can be bad for the well being of anyone around you that has to deal with your crabbiness due to your lack of carbs! I used to try and be carb free and what a mistake that was. I was terrible to be around. I was tired, and irritable all the time. And, just like most diets, I only dropped a few pounds before plateauing. It is definitely a bad idea to cut all carbs.

This video made me realize just how unhealthy I really eat. I hardly ever get anything that is whole wheat. And I always get white bread instead of wheat bread. I just think that white bread and white rice taste better than the wheat bread and brown rice.

Reply

swhitfield February 15, 2016 at 8:56 pm

I feel the exact same way! The white stuff tastes way better than the healthy fiber brown stuff. But I like that rule of thumb that’s an easy way to kind of pick the healthier version even if its just once or twice a month haha.

Reply

Pauffmomma March 2, 2017 at 7:12 pm

I can make the switch the whole grain breads but eating the darker pastas probably never going to happen for me because I cannot stand the test

mpearce June 1, 2014 at 5:02 pm

I’m a big fan of whole wheat products except for the pasta. I just can’t get past the somewhat cardboard taste of it! I make homemade whole wheat bread, I wonder how involved it would be making whole wheat pasta, and if it would be any better? I’ve never tackled homemade pasta, seems like one of those things that would be easy to mess up. If anyone hasn’t tried eating whole wheat bread and rice, if you ever switch to it, white bread and rice won’t even seem palatable anymore.

Reply

CBaise August 26, 2015 at 3:54 am

I am also a big fan of whole wheat products, but I do usually opt for the whole wheat pastas. I think it depends on what you do with it. I made some lasagna roll-ups with whole wheat lasagna and it tasted amazing. I do sometimes get that “cardboard taste” you mentioned when I use the whole wheat spaghetti noodles.

I like how this video was short, sweet, and got its point across. I liked how she laid out the good and bad carbs and addressed them. I will say I was extremely shocked by what she said about white rice, it’s crazy how the body sees it like a ball of sugar. I immediately told my family about this and we have decided “No more white rice for us.”

I realized that there were “good” and “bad” carbs, but I never knew that healthy foods, such as fruit and dairy, contained carbs. Also, I enjoy eating whole grain/wheat items such as pasta and bread rather than the not so good refined versions. However, in todays fast paced lifestyle, it is hard to stay away from all the “bad” carbs.

I liked the good carbs vs. bad carbs vid. It was sort of like a wrestling match and who’d be the better contender to bet on! I guess it’s like that though when it comes to our food… what’s the best one in the long run. It was interesting that they said that whites (bad carbs) spike blood sugar. I really didn’t know that much about that. I did, however, know about how to look for the fiber on the label; it should be the first item in the ingredients and shouldn’t say “enriched” at all. And, I love quinoa. I also love brown rice too!

Working in food services, the company tries to serve all whole grain products. It has been proven that it is healthy for you. Taste is the thing that people are so against, because it does taste bland. But now knowing the difference between good and bad carbs, maybe I can make some suggestions to the company on things that we can serve that will make the food tastier

This good carb-bad carb battle demands we put aside what we have been brought up on. I cannot imagine a sweet potato ever taking the place of a white potato. Not even marshmallows can make them taste better to me. They’re not too bad fried, but that kind of defeats the whole good carb theory.

This is very good information. If you are watching what you eat then carbs are extremely important. Our bodies react so extremely to carbs. It can cause you to lose weight simply by limiting bad carbs. It is so important to eat food as close to its “source” as you can, this makes it more work for the body to process. I love this video, it has been something that I live by for so long.

Every time I watch videos like these, I feel like it’s another reason not to eat anymore. I am a bread eater and I probably will be til the day I die, but I have started making my breads and cakes from scratch so I know exactly what is going into them and I can try to make substitutions when needed.

My family has changed to brown rice, whole grain foods, etc. over the last two years. To anyone that is just now trying it, I recommend trying different brands and sources if you are disappointed with the flavor and texture. In some foods, breads and pastas especially, you get what you pay for. I still prefer the texture in refined foods, but have found whole grain counterparts that are palatable.

The different types of whole grain bread differ a great deal in taste and texture, so try different ones to find the best. When it comes to my oats and cereals, I am able to get by with a very small amount of honey used as sweetener. I end up using less honey than the sugar I sweetened it with before. Better to go without altogether, but I needed something during the transition period.

Yes swapping to whole grain options help, but also be sure to read the ingredients and nutrition label to make sure you are getting what you pay for. All to often whole grain, healthy, or perhaps some other eye catching slogan can be put onto a product, but can misleading about how much or exactly how healthy it might be.

The advice my mothers doctor gave her when she first found out she was diabetic was to change her eating habits slowly. By changing what she ate slowly my mother was able to acclimate to her new diet easier and stick with it better. So my advice would be to add in some good carbs slowly and wean yourself off of some of the bad carbs as you add in new good cards. Good luck.

btubbs January 23, 2014 at 9:18 am

My ex-wife was actually diabetic. She was tiny, 5,2 100lbs, so she thought she needed a lot of carbs. we did the “healthy carbs,” and sadly it still caused her sugar to spike out. I will say that her platos were much more consistant though. I think a lot of our issues are the amount of carbs/food that we eat. I agree you must have carbs and that they are good for you. but as americans we use them to fill the remainder of our plates. One thing I cant stand is the atkins diet. I really think that dude should have his license revoked. That diet is more ridiculous than 6 minute abs, or the Hollywood diet. You will loose weight on it but you are going to get it back.

Reply

hyoung1 January 24, 2014 at 2:51 am

I agree. The atkins and southbeach diet had so many bad things said about them because of the total exclusion of carbs. The problem with diabetics is that its super hard to control the sugars once you start getting older. Filling the remainder of our plates with carbs is so true though. Think about when we go out to restaurants, Mexican restaurants give us chips, steakhouses give us fancy bread, and Italian places offer breadsticks while we wait on our actual food to be brought to the table, when in reality, we’ve already consumed the same amount of calories in our food just from these carbs alone. I think that main issue is that since carbs are “easy” and cheap it is what the majority of the nation consumes to fill their bellies and satiate their palates. I am a total bread lover, wheat bread mainly. Oh man, I love to slather some real butter on it and enjoy but I know that my blood sugars will pay and in turn I will pay. Maybe if more nutrition, physical health, and physical education classes were taught in schools, our youth would have a better idea of how to eat right.

Reply

Stephanie Herndon January 28, 2014 at 7:24 pm

I have tried many diets including the atkins and the southbeach diets and do not at all agree with them. I believe the ChooseMyPlate.gov is probably one of the better diets with all food groups in moderation and physical activity.

MSmith March 1, 2014 at 6:41 pm

I agree. The atkins diet is also awful on those who have gout, due to the amount of protein that is called for in the diet. People who are on these type of diets need to know about the good carbs.

CLovell March 2, 2014 at 10:04 pm

The 3 day diet worked for me, lost 8 pounds the first time

khamblen October 4, 2018 at 10:49 am

I completely agree with you that I wish more nutrition, physical health, and physical education classes were taught in schools today. With our societal shift to needing both parents to work outside of the home I feel that allot of the skills and knowledge needed to become healthy adults is getting lost. I personally am part of this statistic both of my parents had to work outside of the home to support me and my brother. As a result I feel my skills and knowledge to prepare health meals for my family have suffered. I feel that a little bit of help from the education system could go a long way in helping future generations gain the tools needed to take care of their health as adults.

ppendergrass June 13, 2016 at 2:08 pm

My husband is diabetic, and we have learned he needs to eat both protein and carbs at the same time. It helps his sugars not spike, and helps more with weight-loss or weight-gain. If she eats carbs, she needs to eat protein and vise-verse.

You will only gain it right back if you revert back to your old eating habits. When choosing low carb, it shouldn’t be just a temporary diet or fad diet. It is actually a lifestyle choice and a lot of people do not understand that. As I said before a million times to several people, Not that I follow Atkins, because I don’t. I’m on a different low carb way of eating. I still eat carbs. It’s just limited. I don’t over kill my protein because I’m aware of the risks of high protein.

Reply

hyoung1 January 23, 2014 at 3:24 am

The best thing to add to a protein shake is lots of good fruit high in antioxidants and vitamins and Flax seed. Flax seed is great for you and it helps you stay fuller much longer. I’ve never really favored white bread from the grocer but if I go out, I pig out on restaurant breads which are usually almost always processed so that’s a vice I have. Whole wheat and whole grain breads are so much better for you and they do really keep you fuller longer. For my bedtime snack I usually have either peanut butter and applesauce on whole wheat or tuna fish on whole wheat. Eating “good” carbs and protein together keep your blood sugar stabilized at a steady rate and it keeps you full. One thing that I’ve noticed about foods sold in the store such as crackers and such claiming to be “whole wheat” or whole grain, the truth of the matter is that whole wheat isn’t the number one ingredient so that means there is something else that exceeds the amount of the wheat or grain. You always want to be cautious of that. Chances are that anything in a box, can, or bag has been processed and our bodies aren’t tailored to consume these “foods.” This is why so many people are overweight and the percentage of type 2 diabetes is at all time high now.

Reply

Stephanie Herndon January 31, 2014 at 6:19 pm

That is so true about the ingredient listing if whole wheat is not first listed then it is not truly “whole wheat”. I also love tuna for not a bedtime snack but I love tuna. It is full of protein and many other good nutrients. I like the albacore tune it’s a little more expensive but is so goooood!

Reply

btubbs January 23, 2014 at 9:47 am

Patrick, Im not knocking protein shakes at all man, Ive swallowed many of them. I have found that I can get higher quality protein from food than a shake. the problem with protein shakes is that most are full of sugar or artificial sweeteners. Aspartame in artificial sweeteners spikes blood sugar, increases apatite, causes fatigue, causes headaches, and a whole laundry list of things. I would encourage you to try this, eat a handful of almonds or walnuts or even peanuts 30 min. before you go to workout, for your post workout, eat half a sweet potato and a grilled chicken breast or pack of tuna. I feel that 10 grams of raw natural animal or plant protein is far superior to 30 grams of man made or extracted protein. Im just speaking from experience man. when I was in the Marine Corps. I would go through jug after jug of powder, and I hated the bloated feeling, and all the gas, plus the sluggish feeling from digesting it. I know there is convenience in the shakes, if that’s the case then buy the ensure high protein shakes. they have 24 grams in them and I have found them to be easier to digest. I think they are probably a higher quality product then the “GNC big boy stuff.” I hope this helps bud.
