Gastrointestinal Risk with NSAIDs

July 4, 2010

NSAID stands for non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drug. These are anti-inflammatory medicines, medicines which decrease inflammation. They are typically used to treat pain, arthritis, and are commonly taken for either the short term or the long term. Most NSAIDs have stomach side effects because they decrease your body’s natural protection against acid in the gastrointestinal tract.

NSAID’S
This short video was very informative and I enjoyed watching it. It is amazing how many side effects there are when talking about medications. I never knew that taking something over the counter could have such a profound effect on our bodies. I knew that taking too much Tylenol was bad on your kidneys but Aspirin? Aspirin thins your blood and is good for people who have blockage in their circulatory system. You really have to give and take on what you want to do when it comes to making a decision whether to take these pills or not. My rule of thumb, don’t take it unless you just can’t bare it any longer.

Well said unless your doctor says other wise let your body fix its self just be sure its not some thing you are doing that causing the problem and if it is do the hard way and change your behavior and not the easy way and take another pill daily… unless doctor recommend it. When unsure ask a professional.

I agree… We see dozens of advertisements on TV every day on different medications made by big Pharm corps that promise to help rid you of one ailment, but then you have to deal with 5 or 10 side effects the medication causes in order to get rid of just one problem. So you have to weigh out your options and whether or not it’s worth it to take a medication to help with one ailment if you may end up adding another 10 ailments….

As a kid I always found the amount of side effects comical, but now it is just terrifying. Being forced down to a decision between facing the risk or not taking a medication at all should not be as common as it is made out to be.

cnix March 17, 2022 at 2:46 pm

There is no profit in a cure, if there was there would be no dieses. There may be side effects to the medication but you better believe there are 100 other medications out there to help with the side effects of the medication. It is a wheel that is always revolving.

Ashleigh W. July 15, 2016 at 6:48 pm

I agree. I think medication is completely over used and its causing more issues with health than helping.

yes, we all take medicines too much for simple aches and pains, when we should probably just wait for it to pass.

Peyton Blackerby July 22, 2016 at 9:39 pm

A lot of people aren’t properly educated on medication and what they can do to your body. They just go to the drug store and pick up medication that are suppose to help them with certain problems that they are having but aren’t aware of the adverse effects that that medicine may have on your body. Another problem is that people don’t read on the bottle how to take the medicine and how often. Some medications aren’t suppose to be taken over a long period of time.

I completely agree! My initial thought upon watching the video was the complex relationship between positive and negative effects of nsaids. Actually, almost all medications have to have a delicate balance between the desired effects on different parts of the body. Sometimes, the choice between the two is probably more difficult than not!

To buy time and put off the surgery as long as possible we went to see pain specialist and they were able to put together a regiment that gave my husband relief but it didn’t last long. Before we realized it to control the pain our pain doctor had my husband on crazy amounts of opioids to control his pain and he began to have other problem as a result. Thankfully he has since gotten off of all of the medication and is doing well but we are still worried what kind of damage all of the medications he was on for so long has done to him,

I agree that over the counter medications can have many side effects that people are not aware of. Just because something is available to take over the counter does not mean that it is safe for you to take. I think everyone should always make sure that anything they take over the counter is okay for them and will not cause any harmful side effects or clash with any other medications their taking as well. I agree, don’t take it unless you need it.

Sometimes I would read those because I was curious and it is actually crazy what some of those medications side effects can be.

I did not know that the NSAID could target good and bad enzymes at the same time. I try not to take any medicine unless I can not help it. But when I do I try to take Acetaminophen over NSAID but then it still affects you liver so you can not win for losing. It was good information in the video about not taking more than you realize because some medicine may have more that is in there, so read labels for all medicine.

One of the key points of this educational video is to communicate with your doctor about all of the medications that you are taking so that you don’t take too much of something. Many people don’t communicate with their doctors about drugs such as ibuprofen, etc.

I think every medication we take has a side effect. It is up to the person to read, understand and just be aware of the side effect of the medication. A person must evaluate whether the medication is worth the risk of the complication from the side effect. I think a person should be careful when a doctor prescribes a perscription for every ailment you have. Look at reasons why you have this problem and natural things that can ease the suffering of the ailment.

NSAIDS are very widely used drug especialy as the majority of them are bought over the counter as asprin type medications. I never thought of them as contributing to mild stomach upset or indegestion as side efects. Also I learned that people over 60 are at a higher risk of expierencing side efects from these type of meds.
I know for myself I rely on Alieve almost daily, I know it is not good for me but when you hurt bad enough in other areas of the body then to me sometimes the tempory relief outweighs the long term side efect issues.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs is something I really havent heard about. The side affects of these drugs can cause heart attack, ulcers, indegestion, stroke, and loss of protection against stomach acid. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is something that you should replace NSAIDS with because the affects are decreased. Either way you go there are still risks involved.

Ok so maybe I need to back of the NSAIDS before its too late. I take ibprofen almost on a daily basis, headaches. I think it’s probably time i go to my doctor and see if there’s something else i should be taking. I really don’t want to do any harm to my body

I did not know any thing about Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs until watching this video. I didn’t think that there were some over the counter drugs like dietary supplements that included steroids in them. I guess if you played a professional sport you should only use drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen or you might find your self watching the game at home. But for those of us who don’t play professional sports these drugs do come with side affects like losing protection against stomach acid, kidney damage heart attack or stroke so if you find your self taking these drugs you might also want to keep some Tums with you for the acid indigestion You can also use acetaminophen which is in Tylenol instead of using NSAIDs. “Basically you should make sure if using any of these drugs that you have a balance between the benefits and the risk.”

I’m the worlds worst at taking medicine. I’m like a two year old. I hate taking pills or anything. So, I only take something if I have to. I’m doing ok on NSAIDs.

I never take asprin and I’m glad I don’t. I tend to stick with ibueprofen when I have to take pills and even then I don’t like taking that if I don’t have to.

I didn’t know what NSAIDS were and that the alleviate everyday pain. Aspirin and naproxen and ibueprofen. However, I take them when I need to.I knew asprin were bad on the stomache. Mild stomache upset and indegestion would be a side effect of the NSAIDS. That’s crazy because ulcers are serious. You can’t win for losing, by looking at this video. Because if you are not feeling good you have to take something. I also only have one primary doctor so I wont be prescribed more than 1 NSAID.

I dont like taking any medications (including aspirin) unless it is absolutely necessary. Everything you put into your body has some kind of effect on your normal state. Our bodies are designed well and we should let them do their jobs if at all possible.

I’m the same way. I’ve never noticed tylenol or anything like that to help me. I’d rather just wait it out. I know it will eventually go away and I’ve never known a mild pain reliever to speed the process.

Its like a no win situation. NSAIDs are hard on the stomach but isnt Tylenol bad on the liver???? I try not to take medicine unless I feel like Im dying!!!

I don’t think there’s any kind of meds that don’t hurt us in some way. i’m not sure which i would rather have to deal with, GI or liver. Maybe I should just back off the pain relievers

I agree 100%. I take meds for my heart. The long list of stuff they could cause is worse than not taking the meds. Pay attention and read the papers that come with your meds. It is unbelievable. This will help your heart but it will destroy your liver and kidneys.

all these medications come with their own side effects, with the help of the doctors, we just need to be able to identify what is best for us.

That is so true, but then again a bunch of doctors are becoming pill pushers too because of the drug reps and the incentives they offer the clinics that prescribe them to their patients.

LLM July 12, 2011 at 12:03 pm

I agree with you, I try to out do any pain and inflammation as much as possible to keep from taking medicine for these reasons. They need to come up with something so that either way if will not effect your insides but help with your situation.

I don’t like taking asprin…. I knew that taking it could cause ur stomach to bleed but I thought that it was if you took a bunch everyday.
I guess I am going to have to switch to tylenol when I do have to take them,I only like that if it’s totally necessary.

This was a very good video. I knew they were not that good for you but I didnt know their severity. I will watch my intake of these meds I do not want to go through with a bleeding stomach that just sounds painful even to think about it and yes I will begin talking tylenol for any of my needed pains

I agree with you no one wants to have those complication because they are trying to stop pain. It sounds like it’s a win lose situation.

I’m the same way if I feel like I’m dying then I will take them. Most of the time I just sleep a headache or a cold off.

It’s always good to take as little of any meds as you can. I hope we are all learning a lot that we can put to use in our lives from here on out.

So I guess unless it is to reduce swelling you should be taking tylenol. What about excedrine for headaches and products like midol and pamprin? Are they dangerous? I am a real over the counter pill popper I guess. I have heard that you shouldn’t take too much but I guess I am not sure how much is too much? They didn’t really say so I guess I will check with my doctor and in the meantime, hope for the best.

Pretty much either way you go its a win-lose situation. I try not to take over the counter products unless I feel like I’m dying.

I am a lot like you in the fact that I will not take anything that is over the counter unless I am really, really, suffering. It is a gamble when you take this stuff into your body. You have to weigh the pros and the cons. Do I want to feel better for a few hours and possibly do damage to my body which may cause more problems down the road or do I want to wait it out and not take the pills and keep my body as healthy as I can so it will be able to do it job properly? America is over medicated and that is a fact. If we just learn to cope with our aches and pains we would be better off. We are becoming weak in a society that promotes over the counter drug addiction.

I try not to as well but arthritis gets the better of me more than not these days.

Lindsey E December 1, 2010 at 2:17 pm

It seems so much easier to just take something to deal with the pain and go on. But taking too much can eventually catch up with you. I was prescribed a very mild pain pill for my knees after I started having problems from taking so much ibuprofen.
