Five Diet and Nutrition Tips

May 10, 2010

Five tips from Dr. Lisa Hark PhD, RD

  • Make exercise a weekly routine at least 3 times / week will help you to lose weight and maintain muscle tone.
  • Don’t drink your calories. Sweeten beverages have a lot of calories.
Water and low fat milk is best.
  • Three fruits, three vegetables everyday – only 1 cup of raw and ½ cup of cooked fruits or vegetable is a serving.
  • Eat lean meats, poultry, fresh – baked broiled or grilled to save calories and fat. Order food prepared this way when you eat out as well.
  • Limit alcohol intake, alcoholic beverages have more calories than you think. 1 drink for women and 2 drinks for a man is her recommendation.

I have started to do at least 4 or 5 tips of the tips mentioned in the video. I exercise 3 times a week. I drink plenty of water. I eat fruits and veggies, I don’t really consume that much alcohol so I didn’t really have a problem in that area. I think this video is sweet and simple and very informative. However, I have so much going on right now, I barely have time to get on my treadmill and do my walks, but I always try to make time for myself.

Great comments.
It is always easy to give advice then to take it and make it work for our own situation. We just have to do what we can and try to eat right most of the time. If we can think of it as health insurance that we can control the premiums maybe it would motivate us to do better.

She makes it sound so easy. Which it truely is. Just like everything in life though its about will power and its hard to change habits especially eating habits.

All of these steps are easy to follow, however most people won’t. I think #2 – drinking your calories is really hard for those that are addicted to soft drinks. We will have to discipline ourselves to follow the 5 steps. Time, running on a tight shedule is part of the reason the fast food commes to the diet. We need to slow down take time to eat healthy and exercise.

I thought these tips were very simple to go by. Also, I’ve heard these tips many of times, yet I still have problems following them. They’re easy to follow and easy to break.

I know the problem for alot of people is habits. However easy it sounds like habits are very hard to break.

I might have woken up on the wrong side of bed but I think we know these things, and I think it is so much more complicated than that. I mean I suppose I should say that it seems more complicated then tahat if we are talking about losing more then ten pounds. This having been said, I am so not able to cook fish! I am super pickey about both fish and shelfish; if it tastes “fishey” at all, at ALL, I can not eat it. The few fish I have found I do like are not fresh water fish and living here in Arkansas I do not trust anything that says it is “fresh Ocean fish”. I don’t know if anyone has any reccomendations on fish they like and how to prepare it but I tell you…it scares me!

I’m the same way with fishy smells. However, I don’t even eat fish but if my shrimp has a fishy smell or taste, I can’t eat it!!

Those are great tips. My hardest one is that I love Mountain Dew and there are like 170 calories in a can. =/ but i excercise alot and play sports so i guess I balance it out. I love eating healthy so I get lots of fruits and vegetables in my day. I think if people followed these tips and were more active than they wouldn’t have much of a weight problem. Laziness is the weakness that I think America faces when it comes to our weight problem. We need to be more active and people would be way better off!

I know for me that laziness is definetly a problem. I used to manage a gym and be a size 6 at 5’9″, and I’ll tell you I loved how eating healthy made me feel so much so that I even enjoyed preparing the food more than I do now. And I absolutely loved exercising. The way it makes me feel directly after and the increased energy I had on a daily basis was worth every moment of any exercise I did. Now, even knowing how to and how wonderful it makes me feel, I can not seem to disipline myself enough to get a routine going again.
The one thing I do have on my side is that I am not a sugary soda drinker. I am all about some unsweetened tea and coffee too. I abuse myself with carbs!

I think that everyone loves the benefits of working out. What no one likes is the time and effort it takes to get it going and the stamina to stay with it when it means getting up early to exercise or coming home from a long day at work to cook up something healthy. That is the extremely hard part that some can not seem to make it through.

The 5 tips are helpfull. the 3 and 3 is what I need to remember.
I don’t think french fries count as one of the three veggies tho.
I don’t drink and learn to like water. I believe that 5 tips will help.

These tips sound easy enough to do, so I wonder why it is that so many people struggle to lose weight. I think it is just the convenience of being able to get the greasy fried food so fast. I am really trying to use some of the tips we learn on these videos in my everyday life, but it seems like it is too hard to eat enough fruit and vegetables.

Same here I did tho buy some different stuff when I went shopping so I think its just going to be a process of breaking bad habits.
I think I am the queen of fast food bad habits.
I always want to just stop somewhere because it’s quick and easy and I can eat on the go. I need to learn to slowdown I guess. Maybe it will be eaiser then.

I know I eat fast food alot, and its very hard for me to change those habits. I should slow down too. Plus not eating out so much will save alot of money

SDH June 17, 2010 at 12:32 am

I agree with your comment and I think that once a person is used to eating fast food, it is really hard to change the taste buds to want the healthy food.
