I really liked how the gentleman described the chemical buildup of the trans fat, and I never knew all the conditions that could be treated with Omega 3.

I agree i liked how he displayed that too. I am also taking an anatomy and physiology class and what we are studying right now ties into trans-fats. I find it quite intriguing.

Omega 3 fatty acids are great for mental health as well.

kfendley June 5, 2016 at 11:37 pm

I am taking nutrition and find it very interesting that omega 3 can help with so many other medical conditions. I may need to add this to my daily supplements.

lwebb August 22, 2015 at 4:29 pm

I found that very interesting as well! It ties in to what I am learning in A&P

I agree with you. I’ve taken a & p 1 and 2 and it’s amazing how so much of what I’ve learned through those classes tie into my nutrition class.

amello October 5, 2019 at 5:47 am

Nutrition and A&P go hand-in-hand and it has helped me have a better understanding of how the body works by taking these classes along side each other.

Sharris1985 October 29, 2020 at 3:43 pm

I have noticed that also. I am in A&P 1 but I have completed LPN school and a lot of the same scenerios go hand and hand.

laureneleslie February 28, 2022 at 7:17 pm

I actually did too! I am in A&P 2 right now! and I didn’t really understand it that much in part 1, but this would have helped alot if I had access when taking part 1.

I am learning more about Omega 3. I plan to eat more foods with Omega 3.

Amber Newman February 23, 2016 at 10:48 am

Me too. It makes since to have it in our diets, with all the benefits it has.

lefj1979 February 24, 2016 at 4:54 pm

The best source for omega 3’s are found in fish.

aellis February 24, 2016 at 11:18 pm

I did not know all the benefits of Omega 3. I need to start checking into that more.

Jlacombe March 2, 2016 at 2:33 pm

You can take daily fish oil vitamins to supply your body with omega 3, however do not take too much!

tlampinen June 22, 2016 at 12:47 am

i was not aware of all the health benefits of omega3, since i do not eat fish i am going to get a supplement to take now that i know how important it is

DHarrington June 30, 2016 at 2:28 pm

Me too! I knew it was good to have fish in your diet, but I always thought it was because it was a lean meat. I never realized the need for omega 3. I plan on incorporating it more into my diet.

thicks July 6, 2016 at 9:53 pm

I agree! I didn’t know all of the benefits Omega 3 had until watching this video.

Molly Harvey September 7, 2016 at 3:14 pm

I am excited to hear about coconut oil and the benefits of changing to it for cooking. I am a nurse, and did touch on it in nursing school at one point, but I had no idea it was used for blood transfusions. It is amazing that we have so many natural and healthy resources and rarely try them. I am ready to make a change 🙂

vrogers September 12, 2016 at 10:42 pm

I am going to try to eat more omega 3 also.

Megan Schofield October 5, 2016 at 11:23 am

I didn’t realize that I wasn’t consuming enough Omega 3 and how beneficial it is to your health.

abrewer2016 October 5, 2016 at 8:21 pm

I have never heard that coconut oil was healthy for you and helps lose weight. I definitely want to test this one out.

dhouse2 October 21, 2016 at 9:07 pm

i knew some of the good but didn’t know they were that they were this good for you. i agree i will be looking in to them as well.

kherrick January 30, 2017 at 8:06 pm

Me too. I feel bad I did not know this before. I am starting it tomorrow.

Co94dy7 February 22, 2017 at 8:15 pm

If you like being out side or fishing then that is a good source as close to unprocessed as it gets, just do not fry it.

KLaFlora June 23, 2017 at 12:11 am

I don’t really eat many of the foods that have Omega 3s. I will have to rely on a supplement for these.

mclark8 October 11, 2017 at 6:27 pm

I am not a big fan of fish, I wonder if I could balance my diet well with Omega 3 by leaving out the fish.

Natalie Fusilier October 11, 2017 at 8:49 pm

I learned a lot after watching this video. I plan to add more Omega 3 foods to my diet too.

mwilson98 June 27, 2018 at 10:16 pm

I did not know which fat was good or not, and I am good that butter, coconut oil, and olive oil is good fat and olive oil can help with damage hair like coconut oil or butter. What you do is you put the olive oil on your roots of your damaged hair if you have a perm, because it will help the hair to grow stronger and have a shine coat.

redriverscott October 6, 2018 at 7:26 pm

I always thought oils were bad for arteries and worked to prevent good blood flow. Learn something new every day!

redriverscott October 6, 2018 at 7:28 pm

I always thought oils were bad for arteries and worked to prevent good blood flow. Learn something new every day! Definitely gonna be adding more coconut oil in my diet. I have started to use it to cook with. Very tasty addition!

ahenry2551 October 8, 2019 at 4:00 pm

I didn’t know very much about omega 3, but i plan to start incorporating it more into my diet.

Me as well. I may eat fish once a month! Now that I know how it can naturally help my body I will try to eat it once a week.

I’ve always been a person that likes a good salmon, but now I have even more reasoning, I’m with you.

Just by watching this so many of us will eat more foods that contain Omega 3 in them.

I am glad omega 3 fatty acid was mentioned. I had no clue about the benefits of it and while I was pregnant with my daughter, my nutrition consultant told me about them!

dhouse2 October 21, 2016 at 9:10 pm

i was unaware that we needed so much i will be getting the fish oil and get walnuts when i can since they are high priced.

Averyel85 October 30, 2016 at 10:12 am

Yes I wasn’t aware that we needed as much as we do either. I’m sure if I increased my intake it might help with my super dry skin.

Jallinson90 March 1, 2017 at 7:06 pm

I didn’t realize the daily recommendation was that high either. I’m going to have to try to start eating more fish and walnuts. However, I’ll probably need to get some fish oil tablets too, so I can cover all the bases.

H.Robinson February 24, 2018 at 1:50 pm

I always just assumed that omega-3 fatty acids were only found in certain types of fish, I did not know they were found in walnuts. I love eating walnuts!

Sporterfield February 25, 2018 at 11:14 pm

I also was in the dark about how much we needed of them. I knew that they were essential to our diet and were very beneficial, however, now I know how much of each kind I need as well.

emartinez1 March 4, 2018 at 6:08 pm

I never knew that either I found this to be very interesting and revealing. It amazing how much Omega 3 helps our body

stephanie rogers March 6, 2018 at 6:45 pm

I’m glad there was an explanation on omega 3 because I wasn’t exactly sure what it was or how it effected me.

abane June 27, 2018 at 2:14 am

Its so weird that walnuts are such good choices for omega-3 fatty acid!

agolleher October 1, 2018 at 11:47 am

I had no clue that’s why my mom used to include flax seeds in our breakfast smoothies!

havenhughes October 11, 2019 at 5:12 pm

redriverscott – I too thought that oils were bad. I did not know coconut oil was a good things, and I think I’ll start using it as well.

I also had no idea that olive oil could help with your hair – that’s neat!

artreadway September 16, 2020 at 9:25 pm

Definitely consuming more omega-3 fatty acids will help in your diet. They play a critical role in many processes throughout the body. They have many health benefits to offer!

Mholyfiel March 1, 2022 at 9:57 pm

I didnt realize it was needed as well. However, I love fish so it’s good to know that I can get omega-3 through that.

I had no idea how good Omega-3 oil are for you. I don’t consume much of them but Im going to try to introduce them in to family dinners. I am also going to try and get my family to eat more fish and chicken instead of red meat.

krichards3 March 7, 2017 at 11:47 pm

I just added omega 3 to my daily vitamins! I did not know it was such an important substance for our body.

eljaye30 March 1, 2022 at 2:01 pm

Unfortunately I do not consume Omega-3 Oil, I do not like fish. The next time I have to get my vitamin panel checked I will see if that’s something that I need to consume. If I do it will have to be in a supplement.

nbarganier October 11, 2023 at 8:39 pm

I as well thought the chemical build up was very informational. I have several food items that contain omega-3 in it but I did not realize it until i started my nutrition class. I bought most of what my mom bought for me.

I’m famous for using Bacon grease to cook some of my food it adds the best flavor if you like bacon and is better then some of the other options that are worse for us.

I totally agree with that. My husband has a bad heart. He has had two heart attacks and 6 stents put in, on cleaned out and he is on a lot of medication. I would have to take Omega-3 supplements though, because I don’t like any fish or seafood. So, maybe I should start taking these supplements, because I am probably Omega-3 deficient since I don’t eat fish or seafood.

In the second video the man made a very good point that everyone should look out for. If a food serving has less than 0.5g of trans-fat, the company can label it as having 0g trans-fat. That means that when you eat 3 servings of chips, you could be getting 1.5g of trans-fat which is already 3/4 of the RDA of trans-fat, (not that you should eat any).

Lindsey Thompson September 30, 2015 at 6:26 pm

This is a very important tip that more people should pay attention to.

Reply

that is a good point that many do not recognize. I also think that it is dumb that they can label it with zero trans fat even though it is less that 0.5g.

I do enjoy fish so I can trade out a lot more of the chicken and steak to some healthier choices such as some fish. Fish also helps with your digestive system.

This was perhaps my favorite video from the list so far. It was very helpful in determining sources of both good and bad fats. Fats clearly play an important part of overall health; there is fine line in between the right amout of fat in the diet versus too little/much. After watching this video, I will be incorperating much more fish into my regular diet.

Man!, do I love me some salmon, tuna, and basically any kind of fish. It’s hard to eat the right amount per week though as was mentioned in the second vid. I actually tend to eat too much fish so I really have to watch myself. I think it’s so great the benefits of Omega-3’s fatty acids and I especially like the anticoagulant feature and heart healthy benefits of it. I didn’t know it enhanced the benefits of anti-inflammatory drugs. Wow! So many uses for it!

I really thought this video was useful, it’s good to know that you need some trans fat, but not as much. Also, saturated fat isn’t really good for you either. The lady mentioned not to eat cheese or what not. That is very hard for me because I really love cheese.
Olive oil is very healthy and I enjoy my salads with it.

I can relate entirely! Cooking everyday meals and preparing to eat throughout the day can put stress on you as well, but planning it out once a week should make it a little easier.

The trans-fat video helped me realize how bad chips really are. I didn’t know all this before, I will cut down on the snack chips I buy. I don’t think manufacturers should be able to put 0% trans-fat if the product has some even a very small amount. I incorporate flax with my daily spinach smoothies. I enjoy most seafood, but my wife hates it. If you having trouble coming to terms with the taste of seafood, I can offer a few points of advice. The first is to try different sources. The quality has a lot to do with the taste. The second point also works with many bitter vegetables. Add a spicy Cajun seasoning such as Tony Chachere’s or a blackened seasoning. If you can handle the spice, it covers up the less desirable flavors, but does add sodium.

That’s a helpful idea. I don’t mind eating fish. Actually, I love it. However, sometimes it is a bit too expensive for my budget. Flax in a smoothy seems like a viable method of getting more Omega 3’s into my diet.

Remember that different oils mean different smoke points. You may have to adjust cooking methods depending on the oil used. As far as seafood goes, I’ve found fresh or frozen salmon and tuna to be the best with minimal fishy flavor. Try spicy seasonings such as cayenne or red pepper to help your palate if the fishy taste is too much.

Sometimes it’s hard to decipher “good” fats from “bad” fats. Peanut butter is a great example. I, myself am a peanut butter addict and I prefer the partially hydrogenated kind such as peter pan and skippy over the “natural” kind because of the texture. This is bad though. You want to avoid foods that are partially hydrogenated or any “fat’ that is solid at room temperature. That’s something very important to remember. If it’s a fat and it’s solid at room temperature, you may want to skip it. Even though nuts have TONS of good fats, you need to watch your intake of them because they are VERY high in calories. Fish and skinned poultry is a fantastic way to go to get good fats in to your diet. They have omega 3 fatty acids which help aid in blood circulation and heart health. Avocados are also a great source of “good” fat and the oils in them make your hair, skin, and nails strong, healthy, shiny, and beautiful! So that’s a plus. I actually have a face mask recipe that has avocado and honey in it and the results are amazing. It has been ruled out now that real butter is actually better for you than margarine but there are spreads out there that are made with soybean and olive oils and taste great. If cooking, always try to avoid vegetable oil. I use olive oil and peanut oil. Canola oil is good too if you don’t want to spend too much money. I too take fish oil but it’s always better to get your vitamins and nutrients from the foods you eat because that’s the way nature intended it.

sladet January 28, 2014 at 6:09 pm

I agree with you some hydrogenated fats do taste better, though they are not healthy for our cholesterol.

I’ve always heard the Omega 3 Fatty Acids are good fats for your body, but I thought that fish was the only source from which one could attain these. It was helpful to find out the non-fish sources like flax, nuts, and seeds all contain these fatty acids. Also, I didn’t realize that canola oil was classified as a pesticide. I’ll probably stop using it when I pop popcorn.
