I can’t believe doctors are not sharing this information with their patients. They should watch this video and let talk to patients

Calcium 101 (Health Short)
I didn’t know calcium was so important and I also didn’t know calcium was not made in the body, which means that I need to increase my intake dramatically because I am not getting the recommended serving amounts per day and I know it will hurt me in the long run. I will have to change my eating habits.

JHR July 21, 2010 at 12:54 pm

I didn’t know it wasn’t made in the body either. I also don’t get enough calium, maybe it’s time for my eating habits to change too

SDS July 9, 2010 at 9:44 am

I didn’t know calcium came in many different forms and served so many purposes. According to the video, calcium is the most popular supplement than any other supplement. Calcium prevents bone fractures, bone loss, and osteoporosis. Calcium also helps regulate blood flow. I didn’t know that there were many different forms of calcium. The most common form of calcium that is inexpensive and hard to absorb is calcium carbonate, which is also known as dolemite or egg shell. This form of calcium is basically ground up rocks and stones.
I also didn’t know calcium had to be acidic in order function properly. And the older we get the harder it is to acidify calcium. Once again, I didn’t know that calcium was so important to the human body. I have never taken any calcium supplements and I know that is sad to say, but I thought as long as I drank my milk I would be covered which is apparently not the case. I going to have to do better.

I never realized how important it was to take vitamin supplements were but I also never knew that there are bad things in some of these supplements. Why are they even putting these things in our vitamins? Things that make it hard on our digestion system. It doesn’t make since. We’re taking these vitamins to help our body when in the long run, some can harm our body.

I agree with most of the comments above. Most, not all , doctors are just going to recommend the calcium supplement, but how is the client suppoed to know which one to get? Clients should research, especially since the Ca++ should contain four trace elements and each brand has its own ingredients.

MEL June 10, 2010 at 11:46 pm

I agree. I think people should research things on their own. There are alot of great websites you can find that tell you what you need to know that your doctor might not. And reading the lables on vitamins and other medications you get is a great way to be sure what you are putting in your body.

I did’nt know that Calcium and vitamin C were two different things. I was under the impression that V.C was Calcium. I learn something new everytime I watch on of these videos, so full of important information that I think everyone needs to hear. I know now as well that I don’t get my recomended dose of calcium every day I need to start taking vitamins but when I go to but the Calcium I know what to look for some with the 4 trace minerals.

SDH June 9, 2010 at 2:45 pm

From watching the video, it is very important for people to not only eat healthy diets but to include vitamin supplements as well. I think it unfortunate that in our busy lifestyles, one must research the different types of supplements to know which one is benificial and the ones that provide empty nutrients. I would think that if it is on the shelf in the pharmacy that it would contain the necessary ingrediants to help with bone loss and osteoporosis.

LNS June 9, 2010 at 12:31 pm

I did not know that all these vitamins did so much hearing all what the government always talks about kinda can steer you away but God first always

JEB June 9, 2010 at 3:06 pm

I agree….. :)) after I watched the video on Vitamin D I got to thinking about wale the cartoon. thats seems what the goverments goal is to steer us away from health and to keep us blinded to things that really matter. I hope America wakes up and realizes before it’s to late to help their health. of course tho I did’nt know until I took this class so how will they hear unless we tell them?

LNS June 9, 2010 at 12:30 pm

I read the comment about the supplements and I have been wanting to go get on Yeah they probably dont have full requirements but hey that and the good diets we are all learning about will get us what we need reguardless of the government or not Im gonna go buy one so I know I am getting something and then eat better and hopefully i can better me and my family’s health

Beth Mcraven June 9, 2010 at 12:11 pm

When I watch this kind of information I get angry. I do not understand why there are supplements on the market that do no good? Why is this allowed to happen? So many things are regulated by the food and drug administration, so why not this sort of thing. I am 40 now and need to start making sure I take care of myself, but it gets so frustrating to hear you’ve been taking something that does no good. I suppose I should focus on the good news which is that now I do know better thanks to being in a nutrition class right?!

SDH June 9, 2010 at 2:49 pm

I agree that it is dificult to know which supplements will provide what a person needs. The research is out there, but how do you know what to trust and who has the extra time to look it all up.

RTP June 8, 2010 at 9:00 pm

It is sad to learn about people taking medications intended to help them, but finding out later that those medications were actually harming them. Even if the benefits are great, side effects of drugs should definitely be an important topic for discussion with your doctor.

JEB June 9, 2010 at 3:07 pm

you are telling the truth.

QAL June 7, 2010 at 8:31 pm

I thought that all the supplements would be good for you. I didn’t know that some supplements are better than others. You have to read the ingredients in calcium supplements to make sure that it has all the right things in it so the calcium is able to be fully absorbed into your body.

RTP June 8, 2010 at 9:03 pm

I think it talked about that in the text. Labels should definitely be read before people take any kind of supplements. It is unfortunately, however, that so many people see things or TV or just take other peoples’ word and go out and buy the latest fad pill. People should definitely consult a doctor if they aren’t aware of all the risks associated with supplements.

Admin. June 10, 2010 at 6:22 pm

Everyone must take charge of their own health; do their own research first before jumping on the band wagon in taking any new supplement pills. Just because that supplement does your neighbor some good it may not be appropriate for you.
I always tell my clients to get their pharmacist to cross check their medications for Rx contraindications and also do your own homework. There good websites to allow you to do this.
Another good reason to get all your medications from one place.

SAF June 7, 2010 at 12:26 pm

Sounds like Calcium citrate but even more so he said its important to blend calciums so that would kind of make them like complimentary vitamins right. so we could take calcium supplements that would all work together would be more beneficial right?

QAL June 7, 2010 at 8:37 pm

Why aren’t the calcium supplements with the all essential ingredients that you need the only ones sold in the stores? I don’t think that someone would waste money on supplements that you had to mix with another supplement to work.

Beth Mcraven June 9, 2010 at 12:17 pm

Indeed! I was just writing about how frustrating it is that there are useless supplements for sale! Here you have the general public trying to do what’s right and work towards being healthy and preventing disease, all the while some company is laughing all the way to the bank. I hate to sound so suspicious and jaded but it seems like everytime we turn around we are guided with misinformation from people we trust. As discoveries are made and once correct information shifts or becomes obsolete, the products on the shelves should change too.

ARB June 6, 2010 at 7:12 pm

It is unfortunant that many medical doctors do not advise their patients to make sure that their calcium supplements do not contain the four trace minerals that were discussed. With the latest bad research about Fosomax I think many doctors should watch this video and share the information with their patients.

SAF June 7, 2010 at 12:27 pm

I agree I just think sometimes docotors learn so much and there is so much new info out there that sometimes they just don’t know everything or perhaps haven’t even heard about things like this. But I agree my doctor should definatly see this video.

LMM June 13, 2010 at 11:26 am

I’m sure there is so much information that our doctors haven’t been updated on. The FDA is changing their regulations almost every day. But I would feel much more comfortable if my doctor was able to tell me the things in these vitamins to look out for.
