I had an elderly patient that had the diverticulous and she had trouble going to the restroom. She could not eat things with seeds because they would get into these pockets and cause her pain.
that is good advice on what not to eat if you have Diverticulitis . I had no idea that this was even a thing until this video.
I didn’t either. I guess you learn something new everyday.
Am I the only one who has no idea this was like a disorder people actually have?
I was in the dark on this one too.
That is so strange I never knew about the foods they couldn’t eat
i didnt know about the foods that you couldnt eat either, its amazing how diseases progress from so many different things
I didn’t either as well crazy how much you can learn just by a video
I know a few people that have Chrone’s disease. It is AWFUL. I feel so bad for the almost constant issues that they have to deal with. I wish there was a cure for it.
I agree. it is very awful. I don’t know anyone with Chrone’s Disease, but I do know people who suffer with GI problems. Sadly, no cure, but education is the key.
I know someone with the chrone’s disesase and i agree with you. it is awful.
my mom has had colon/rectal cancer twice and her lower GI has never been the same with all the surgeries and chemo.
I agree Chrones disease can make some ones life miserable.
My step dad has Chrone’s and you talk about a constant battle. He is constantly in pain and can barely eat the same foods that the rest of my family eats. It is so sad.
I knew a guy I went to school with that had Chrones and he couldn’t eat what the school had most the time and he was also in and out of school all the time.
Yes! I agree I wish there was something that they could do to help these people. This is so sad. I had a little boy in my class that had chrone’s and he missed a lot of school and had a very strict diet.
My mom is the same way, we cannot give here popcorn, or jams with seeds. It always scares me so I am constantly checking.
I had a family member years ago that suffered with diverticulitis. She had to have surgery and a temp colostomy for 6 months. It was my first experience with this disorder and I had to help pack a deep surgical wound with sterile gauze for awhile after the procedure.
This is true. I knew a lady who couldn’t eat strawberries, tomatoes or ANY nuts at all. They would cause her GREAT pain if one of her pockets got infected.
I also didnt know tat they couldn’t eat different foods.
Yes I have heard that it can be painful for people if they get things stuck in the pockets. It has got to suck to not be able to eat what you want.
Fiber foods are really helpful because they generally make you go to the restroom but staying away from foods with seeds is a good recommendation because they will get caught in the pockets as shown in the video.
That is so scary that such small things could cause your patient such pain. This video is very educational on things you could avoid if you have diverticulous. I hope your patient is doing well.
My mom has diverticulitis and it causes so many issues. So many restrictions on what she can eat to keep it from flaring up.
Why on Earth does a colon need so many holes in it?…why does it even need holes? Is there a specified purpose for them?…
I didn’t know that gluten was in as much stuff as it is. It has to be really hard to live with not being able to have any gluten in your diet.
I was wondering the same thing about the colon. It was gross. Not something I look forward too in nursing.
That was my first thought about the video of the colon. . It was hard for me to watch.
I know that people are always asking me where the gluten free food is and let me tell you it is very hard to find a variety. It really has to suck for them.
I do not eat gluten and it is very hard to find some foods you love. The easiest way is to eat just meat, veggies, and rice.
it would be terrible to be gluten free.
I didnt know why people ate gluten free now i do.
Me to, I always thought it was another diet thing. Good to know information here.
I learned something new also.
I didn’t realize that being gluten free didn’t only refer to your diet. I had no idea there was gluten in tooth paste and make up products. Pretty wild to think about everything you have to cut out to be completely gluten free.
Yes it is pretty wild, and to think, it seems like only a few years ago I had never heard of it.
I’m like you … I thought gluten was only in foods. It’s good to know it can be in other products as well.
Same here, never would have guessed gluten would be in my toothpaste. Becoming gluten free would be extremely hard for me.
I also didnt know that there was gluten in toothpaste or li[p balms.
I honestly thought that non-food items that touted being gluten-free were just jumping on the bandwagon!
I have to agree. I would not have thought gluten would be in tooth paste. Who knows what else it could be in.
I had no idea that gluten was in non-food products either, it is crazy how it is in so many things.
Yeah I had no idea Gluten was in more than just food. Im just used to people saying they can’t eat food with gluten, not I can’t use that toothpaste because it has gluten in it.
I had no idea lip balm could have gluten.
I thought the same thing about the colon. I never knew it had so many holes in it or what they were really needed for. Very gross!
Having issues with your colon can be a very serious matter. Colon cancer can hit anyone at an older age so its best to make sure you have lots of fiber if your body allows to do so. Diverticulitis can require you to change your diet. They recommend you to not eat anything that is able to get trapped in the pouches in your colon. Examples are seeds.
-JB
Yes, colon cancer is a very serious sickens that will kill a person really fast.
My mom has stage four colon cancer, while shes currently in remission they told us at the very beginning of her diagnosis that she has very low chance going into remission. it was a very scary thing and she stayed strong and held her head high and she has come through a lot and we just pray that she stays in remission.
Yeah, I’ve lost two older relatives to colon cancer. Sadly both of them passed away within 6 months of their diagnosis. I’m not sure what their fiber intake was prior to diagnosis, but I’m guessing it wasn’t as mush as it should have been.
I agree that having issues with your colon can be quite serious. The colon is yet another part of the body that can be taken care of with the proper diet and eating the right way.
Diverticulitis looks like it could be very painful. My oldest son had a colonoscopy when he was nine and to be truthful it was extremely painful for him. The video makes me really want to eat alot of fiber!!!! In the second video it explains how some people cannot eat wheat because they have celiac disease. It’s always a catch in our world today, one says eat alot of fiber and another says if you have this alergic problem with gluten then you cannot eat wheat. To be honest before the last few years I had never heard of gluten. It has become a problem for our society and we should become aware of it incase our children have it.
No pain whatsoever with my colonoscopy. It was a little confusing eat wheat/ don’t eat wheat. fiber/no fiber. Lacotose intolerant, gluten-free… it really makes you to stop and think before you put anything at all into your body…
I didn’t know there was such a thing as celiac’s disease. I guess I had heard of it but never paid too much attention. The pockets in the colon look as though something has eaten through the colon. It’s very scary to know that some go without even knowing they have it. What are the consequences of going gluten free if you don’t have the disease?
I am in the same boat as you!!! I guess I did not really know either.
I didn’t realize what celiac’s disease was until i worked at a restaurant we had a gluten free menu and i was surprised to see how many people actually had to use that menu.
That is wonderful that you all had gluten free options! We have come a long way!
I definitly feel for people who have these diseases. Dealing with all of that on a daily basis seems like a rough way to go. We learn again, how important nutrition is though. Nutrition and the right diet can make a big difference.
I can’t imagine having to live that way. We take so much for granted.
we sure do !!!
You are so right! I couldn’t do it
Agreed! I feel awful for the people that suffer with any of these diseases. I can’t imagine!
We really do, its sad.
I agree about how important nutrition is. I had no clue before this class. I mean I understood I needed to watch what I eat but I never knew exactly why and how. Our bodies are crazy sophisticated and it’s necessary to give it what it needs. I am grateful I don’t have one of these diseases. I think I would just die if I had Celiac. Pasta and wheat bread oh my!
Our bodies are truly amazing in all that they do that goes unnoticed!
I know, I can’t imagine. I guess it just becomes a daily routine. Nutrition for sure can make all the difference in the world if you follow it correctly.
I agree. We all don’t realize how important food is for us.
Yes, it is so very important to have a good diet and eat what is right for us so that we do not have these problems down the line.
I knew that lots of food contain gluten, but had no idea toothpaste and lip balm do as well. That is crazy to me. s-g
I had no idea that gluton was in toothpaste. I know a few people with cellica, its not pleasant either. I also had a history of polops and that is not pleasant and it could turn into cancer witch is another major history in my family.
CS- I totally agree with you, it is so so hard to stay away from wheat and pasta and it is very hard to change your diet. This is similuar to a diabetic having to change your eating ways. Spicy food also make aggervation to this as well
RE
It is important for a parent to be famillar with their childs body to know when something is wrong, because, I am sure this parent thought they were giving their child the right diet only to find out their diet had to be different for survival.
It is a huge adjustment for a parent and child to change the diet they are use to, to a diet that is necessary. I have many friends that have had to study and work at learning what is appropriate and find ways to incorporate this into their family’s dinner routine. as with any diagnosis, KNOWLEDGE is POWER!! we can not ever know too much when it comes to making quality of life better for our families.
These videos have only doubled my concern about the foods I buy and feed to my family.
Defiantly don’t know what we are eating anymore. These videos make my food purchase questionable.
Celiac disease and crohn’s disease….i know about them firsthand and i wont wish them for my worst enemies.
EA
Is your colon suppose to have that many holes?!
What are they used for?
I have taken care of several patients that had this disease ( Celiac) It is very serius, and it is very hard to stay away form anything with wheat, like pastas and bread…..My Mother in law had diverticulitis, and was hospitalized with it…Our diets are really lacking, we really need to eat more fiber and cut out the refined sugars etc.
These videos had alot of good information. I once worked with a lady who had diverticulotis. I know she would talk alot about what foods she could not eat and if we had a cookout at work we all made sure we left out peanuts or any of the other food itmes she could not tolerate. This disease like many others is something that can be managed with the types of food you eat or don’t eat.
Its great she is so responsible and tells you all what she cant have! As terrible as it is to keep up with it all.
These videos really taught me alot. I had not even heard about Diverticulotis. I had heard about celiac disease but i didnt know that is was caused from wheat and barley. The first video was really cool. It was very graphic which I thought was pretty cool, but it was also very informative.
I has not a clue about any of these diseases. The only one I was semi familuar with was Chrons. I used to be very close to a person with Chrons and he taught me a little bit about it. He gave me details of the symptoms and told me about the certain foods he could not eat alot of. This video was helpful in learning about the diseases.
(in the second video) I didn’t know that the condition can spread through out a household.
This is a very good video and i already knew about the diets with me having chrons diease but these diets are no walk in the park especially the glutin free diet.
Video one was very graphic…I now know what diverticulitis looks like. I had no idea what celiac disease was. I love wheat.. it would be so hard to not have wheat in my diet. I cant believe that such a disease can even cause infertility. I best friends mom has crohn’s disease. It was ineresting to see what it does to you. Is chron’s disease hereditary?
its a good video but i already knew this…
All of these video’s were very helpful in explaining these diseases since I had really no concept of what they were before. I didn’t like the first video because of the colonoscapy but I understand that that is what is necessary to check for the disease.
The videos were very informative in how celiac disease is hereditary and that it is actually very serious and that you can’t cheat, you have to have gluten free products all the time. One thing I would have never known is that toothpaste or lip balm can have gluten in them.
Celiac diease- is a diease caused by wheat and barley. It is very fatal and hereditary. I didnt know this. The vidoes were very informative on the diease and their treatments.,
I didn’t really know about any of these diseases before now. I know an older man who comes in all the time where I work who had to have part of his colon removed. He is super skinny and smokes like a freight train. I just thought he didn’t eat right or take care of himself but I now realize he just suffers from a disease. Its crazy to think about how many healthy people there are in the world, when there are so many different diseases out there.
Once again Fiber is stressed only this time in refrence to the diverticulitis. Seems to me that fiber needs to be monitored to make sure that a person gets enough of it in their diet to prevent problems from creeping up on you.
Wow! I would have never thought of checking out a tube of lip balm to see if it would contain gluten. This segment of the video made me realize that I need to be reading all labels and just not food labels themselves for there contents. It was interesting to learn that people who cheat on their diets in refrence to Celiac disease that even though you do not feel any symptons from some gluton products….you are still recieving dammage from the products you use containing it.
I did not care for the last video. It did not have enough information in it to be very clear. The only thing that stuck out at me was that the condition can be treated with a modified bacteria called IL10 which helps in healing the bowl walls. Other than that I got nothing/nada
each time i watch any of these videos, iam glad because i leave with very new information.it would have been much better if i got more out on the video on chron’s disease
I am like you there was not enough information there to make you understand it at all.
If you watched the video they did leave a number to call for more information.
I second to that. Great videos!
I agree that these videos were very informative. I was glad to learn more about these diseases.
The videos were good about explaining the different ways to treat and get rid of digestive situations
Thes videos were very informative about the different digestive problems. Showing the different was they can be treated.
Even though these video’s was “yucky” to most, maybe I’m a little werid but it intrigued me. I guess I’m not your “average” girl. Honestly, I have heard of Crohn’s disease but other two diseases are in the dark for me.
Diverticulotis- its common lower GI problems and a colinoscopy is manidtory to check for the diease. The symptoms seem heard to detect unless they are way out of hand. Like astonishing weight loss. But it can be treated by eating fiber and cutting down on processed foods or a gluten diet.
Crohn’s disease- is an intestional disorder affecting the intestines and caused by bacteria. It affects the GI tract. It amazing that the body destroys the cells and it’s symptoms are abdominal pain. It can be treated by bacteria. I didnt get a lot out of this video but I had most of the information under my belt.
Celiac diease- is a diease caused by wheat and barley. It is very fatal and hereditary.
I never knew that these dieases were so common and how fatal they can be to the body. Great information
I never really understood diverticulitis or crohn’s disease and had never heard of celiac disease. My sister has a lot of the symptoms of Celiac disease, I am going to ask her if she has ever been tested for it. What was really interesting to me is that Celiac disease is hereditary and that makes even more sense to me now that I think about how my mother and grandmother are and now my daughter too.
Okay this is why I chose not to go into the medical field. I couldn’t even watch the first video. I just listened to it. It’s kinda interesting I guess but I’m just not into that stuff. I know I have one but still Eww.
I have had a colinoscopy befor because of my father haveing colin cancer, and i understand some of the things talked about in these videos. Although i never knew about some of the diseases in the lower gi tract that these videos. I also am a firm beliver in home grown nutrition.
I never knew there was a connection between a gluten free diet and disease. I thought it was just another healthy diet thing like low/ no carbs. I never knew there were actually people with allergies to wheat, rye and such.
I had a son in law with diverticulitis. He was in his 20’s when he had surgery. Scary.
It is sad and It’s sad to think about all the people that do suffer. I’m sorry for your loss.
I had know idea that fiber had to do with diverticulosis. Or that it is a remedy for it. I know a man who has it and he says that the inflammation from it usually is very mild but he also said that it can get very severe. I should tell him he needs more fiber
Very few of us take in 35 to 40 grams of fiber a day as the video suggested that people need if they have diverticulosis, but yet about half the people over 50 years of age have this disorder in their intestine.
I noticed the other day while walking down some of the food aisles at Walmart that they are making more gluten-free products such as brownie mixes and bread mixes that are gluten free. That is good because people with that problem have difficulty finding foods they can safely eat.
That was kind of yuck to watch but really interesting at the same time. I know I would hate to have that procedure done to myself. I had never heard of Diverticulites until I watched the video nor really knew much about chromes disease. I felt like I learned alot from the videos.
Yeah I have never heard of Diverticulites until the video either. But its good to know about that way we can eat the required amount of fiber to help with the problem.
I agree about the first video being pretty disgusting, but it was very informative.
VIB animation: Crohn’s disease
I am glad that Crohn’s diease can be cured by bacteria. Looking at the video, and then reading the material on Chron’s Diease does a harmful job to the GI tract. This video shows a very vivid picture.
–SDS
Absolutely. i really liked this video. i too didn’t know that Crohn’s could have such an effect on the GI tract
I didn’t know where gluten came from or that it had caused such a problem with GI health.
I remember reading in my Taber’s that Crohn’s disease affects primarily the beginning parts of the large intestines and ulcerative colitis affects the end of the large intestines. celiac disease is severe and can be very fatal. I got to see diverticulosus during a colonoscopy at one of my clinical sites.
I never knew that these diseases were common.
I didn’t know how common they were either until I watched these videos!
I have never heard of ciliac disease before, I did’nt know that wheat and barley would do that but like I said never heard of the disease before.
Chrome’s video I didnt get much out of it I could not hear it that well and both sounds were all the way up.
The first video on Diverticulites I think I have heard of it but did’nt really know what it was till now. that helps.
I did not like watching the first video about Diverticulitis. I know that having a colonoscopy is important and necessary for some diagnosis but I felt sick just watching it. I can not imagine going to have that procedure done. I hope that there is some alternative by the time I have to get a colonoscopy done.
I know what you mean, kinda like a car wreck for me. I didn’t want to look but I kept looking any way. I am squimish at the thought of having this procedure done myself however, an old boss of mine found out early that she had colon cancer her very first time…so, I will do it but I won’t like it.
It is a little unsettling. I know they say that these are minimally invasive but I feel like you might be in pain after the surgery because you aren’t used to have a probe in your colon but I have no idea.
ok so I’ve watched the videos and I have a question on Diverticulitis. I thought that the way the colon looked with the pouches was pretty cool and I might have been paying to much attention to the video and not the information but what exactly causes the pouches. Is it erosion or acid or just lack of fiber. What exactly causes the colon to create little sacks like that.
I didn’t realize so many people have problems with celiac disease. I had never even heard of a gluten free diet until I started working at the hospital. This video helped me understand it much better.
I don’t think I have ever heard of that either.
I have worked in the medical field but never really understood everything I guess there’s always room to learn.
I did not know that there was such a disease as celiac. I also agree i did know of gluten but i didn’t know of it severity. The video was very educational to me. Kinda mind blowing to think that something out there will destory you cillia..
I agree, it’s so scary that we could put things in our body in foods that can ruin our instestines.
I never knew what Chrome’s diease was. I also didn’t know it was an intestinal disorder. However, I have been watching tv and the drug accutane has been recalled because it has been linked to causing Chrome’s Diease.
–SDS
I see a lot of commercials for different medications for different conditions and never really pay attention. We have covered a lot of them in this course and its interesting to learn about them in greater detail.
That’s why diet is so important. A good natural, if possible home grown diet. The miracle drug of today my be your lifelong illness next month.
Managing Celiac Diease-Mayo Clinic
A diease from eating wheat rye or barley. Thats crazy gluetin can damage vili eand longer term effects can cause infertility and weight loss. I have never heard of this diease before and its hereditary and be treated by dieting and watching what you eat that is unheard of. You learn something new every day.
–SDS
–
In the first video, common lower GI problems I have never heard of Diverticulotis. It’s crazy because it can be treated my eating fiber and cutting down on processed foods. I have never heard of this particular GI disorder before.
SDS
if not for nursing school, i would never have known about this type of disease too.if you are thinking of getting in to that field, its really amazing to learn about many type of diseases, even the ones you never thought exists.
I have been aware that some people have to stay away from gluten but I did not understand the severity of the condition. I would imagine that it goes undiagnosed in a lot of people because it seems that it would be difficult to detect unless you knew a lot about it before you had any symptoms. The weightloss was the major signal for the girl in the video and I would think it would have to be pretty severe weightloss in order for it to seem like there might be a problem. I didn’t really understand the video about Chron’s, and I wanted to because both my step mother and my father have it. My stepmother had to have a large portion of her intestine removed when she was rushed to the hospital in severe pain years ago. Now she is doing well and likes the fact that she can eat anything and it comes right out just about. She and my father LOVE food and it is an important part of their lives…kind of ironic they both have Chron’s. Isn’t it being diagnosed more frequently now? Has it been around a long time?
I didn’t get much from the Chron’s video myself. I don’t know the answers to your questions but I hope someone can answer them because I’d like to know as well.
I some what agree with your response to the chrons video LMM. I’ve seen two people I know with it and and I already knew of its severity and that there was a medicine for it. The only thing I found interesting is that its the body itself that is destroying the cells. I for some reason always thought it was the bacteria doing all the damage, but bacteria is just the start of it.
I did not get much info from the Crohn’s video either. I understand that it is a disease that affects the intestines and usually causes abdominal pain.
I think Chrohn’s disease affects the entire GI tract causing inflammation. The video just talks about food that you should avoid if diagnosed. These three videos are about conditions of the lower GI. These videos would of been of great help last semester. for more info : look at link below https://www.crohnsandcolitis.com/crohns
I believe that Chrons is being diagnosed more frequently now with all the technology and modern medicine. I agree the Chrons video was hard to grasp but I have studied it before so it was a little easier to understand
