BMI Calculator

BMI Body Mass Index is a number calculated from your weight and height. What does it mean? A BMI number is just a guide often used to determine a healthy body weight, or the level of health risks from being overweight.

Body Mass Index does not measure actual percentage of body fat or lean body mass. BMI calculation is NOT accurate for the elderly populations, pregnant women or very muscular athletes such as weightlifters.

BMI numbers:

BMI is less than 18.5 – “underweight” range

BMI is 18.5 to 24.9 – “normal” or Healthy Weight range

BMI is 25.0 to 29.9 – “overweight” range

BMI is 30.0 or higher – “obese” range

One women’s research study observed women under the age of 65 and are within the ideal BMI range. This study showed that moderate exercise such as climbing stairs, taking a hike, taking a yoga class can help you maintain your healthy BMI. A weekly 150-minute of moderate physical activity is enough to keep from weight gain and lowers health risks. However, if you are at the higher BMI range, you need more rigorous exercises and a calorie reduction plan as well. See Calorie Calculator.

Although BMI is not an accurate health risk indicator for all populations, many doctors, hospitals and insurance companies use it as a tool to identify weight problems such as underweight, overweight or obese. The associated health risk factors are their main concerns.

So, why not aim to be within that “healthy range” of 18.5-24.9.
By maintaining an ideal BMI range, you can reduce your health risks for chronic diseases, feel healthier, and may even lower your health care costs.

Most of us do not count calories unless we need watch them for weight loss or weight gain. I get asked the question how many calories should I eat each day all the time. The calories you need depends on your health goal: to gain, maintain, or lose weight. Hare are a few basic points on calorie needs.

There are 3,500 calories for each pound of body fat.

Let’s say you want to lose one pound a week. You need to eat 500 less calories each day than your body need for maintenance for seven days. In reverse, to gain a pound a week you need to eat 500 more calories per day for seven days. Of course there is more to that but not within the scope of this blog post. This free online calculator is for an estimation of calorie need for daily maintenance. Healthcare professionals use more precise method for calorie estimation but this one is pretty good.

How to use this simple and free calorie calculator:

Enter your factual information. Here is a general rule for determining your physical activity level.

Sedentary: Chair-bound or bed-bound, activities of daily living only, no planned exercise activity.

Lightly Active: Activities of daily living plus seated work with little moving around and little or no strenuous leisure activity.

Moderately active: Activities of daily living, plus the equivalent of walking 4,000 steps per day, or standing jobs with some walking.

Very active: Activities of daily living plus active walking job, with moderate sport activities 1-2 times a week.

Extremely active:: Activities of daily living, plus vigorous exercise such as jogging, running, swimming, tennis, soccer, basketball, digging, or strenuous work most days of the week.

NOTE: Your calories need per day would be more for maintenance if you are pregnant, breast feeding, or with need for healing. Also, if you have digestive disease that effect nutrient absorption this calorie need calculator would not be accurate. Consult your personal healthcare provider for further guidance.
