Every Day Food Made Healthier

March 24, 2010

All your favorite foods can be made healthier. By making smart substitutions for less fat, less salty ingredients you make a healthier food choice.

Here are some ideas:

Mix together regular crackers, popcorn, snack foods, cereals with lower fat variety to dilute the fat and salt content. Such as:
Unsalted and salted crackers, regular or buttered popped popcorn with microwave “light” popcorn, baked chips mixed with regular chips.
You will eventually get used to the lower fat versions and may prefer them saving a lot calories and sodium.

Dressing up baked potatoes: add low fat or non fat yogurt, cheeses,
Margarine, light soy sauce, salad dressings, canned spaghetti sauce, or picante sauce. If you want meat, add lean chopped ham.
Shredded chicken or turkey.

Spiced up French fries:  thinly sliced potato wedges, spray baking sheet with cooking spay, sprinkle on Parmesan cheese or your favorite seasonings bake 1 hour or until tender, turning only once.
I like to use a zip-lock bag toss in the potato wedges, coat with olive oil, and Cajun seasoning then bake in my toaster oven. Yum!
